Hi

When a Druid's Animal Companion gains extra hit dice, do you use the 'monster advancement' rules?
Eg. Does a 4HD Wolf Companion gain Large Size, plus the Strength increase, etc?
I didn't think it did, since the 'extra' HD are a function of the Druid's class ability, not the wolf's.

No. As per the LGCS, Chapter 6 Beyond the Core Rules,

"Advancing Animal Companions: Animal companions advance using the rules laid out in the PHB. They do not gain anything (larger size, etc.) that is not specifically mentioned in the PHB."

That means that the companion will gain skill points (1 per HD for a 2 int animal) and feats as normal for its increased hit dice. It will have good reflex and fort saves just like a character of the same level as the animal's HD. And it will gain the pluses to natural armor, strength, and dex, plus some bonus tricks and special abilities conferred by being an animal companion....

At higher levels, that wolf companion can be pretty awesome...
