Anyone using the special cohort from "Redtide" [Archive] - Wizards Community

Redtide is retired now, so I guess I can ask about the Dakon Wizard cohort.

Is anyone using this guy, and if so then what did you do with him as far as levels and equipment and feats and such? I have the leadership feat looming on the horizon and his stats are too great to pass up.

There's a variety of ways to go with it - I assume the Marshal character is the one with access?

I'd probably go some kind of combo wizard/fighter or wizard/monk/enlightened fist build who you can boost with your auras. I'd also try to get him evasion to help out with hp via Divine Oracle or Monk 2.

Actually my archer has access.

There is just straight wizard and let him boost me.

There is the chewbacca strategy of sticking his other levels in fighter or barbarian and letting him guard me. I could cleric him, etc.

It just sucks that most of the really optimal builds for him are messed up by that wizard level.

Hmm...your halfling archer can keep him within 2 levels of himself on the Leadership table? My 8 Charisma character got access to him unfortunately. My Bard has the War of the Dust Ranger with the 28 point buy, but 16 Wisdom access.

Have you thought about Wizard 6/PrC 2/Earth Dreamer 5 - he's got the Wisdom for Earth Sense unlike most Wizard builds...

Dumb question. I also have access via War of the Dust. Do I need the Leadership feat to get the Ranger? If so, it's going to be a while.

Yes, you need leadership feat for the cohorts.

I also have access to that dust ranger, but those stats weren't on the AR, and I don't have the module to get them from and the guy who ran it for us is not someone I usually play with (matter of fact, it looks like the game itself was never reported to the RPGA, since it doesn't show up on my history).

My archer has a charisma bonus. I dumped INT and Wis and kept a charisma bonus, which is why I can keep a cohort right behind me in level.

Hi

The Dakon's a cohort for my Dwarf Clr3/Warmage 3
I was going to take Craft Wand as my 3rd lvl feat, but when this came along....

Despite the sucky 1st lvl feat (Gt Fort), I've made him a Wiz1/Clr3.
(Farlaghn - Celerity/Travel). Was going to be Party buffer, but managed to get Master Crafted Kuo Toan Pincer Staff in a mod. (Forcing 3rd lvl feat)

So now he's my bodyguard. ;)
Enlarged, Bull Strengthed, Str 24, Pincer Staff doing 2d8+10 dam, with +11 for his grapple (size + str).

Haven't been able to use him yet, but Conception is just over a week away..... :D

Cheers

You couldn't take craft wand with a cohort anyways. If you read the paragraph on cohorts in the LGCS its specifically not allowed.

I love my Dakon cohort for my 15th level paladin/pious templar. I kept him as a straight 13th level wizard cohort because the party I play with does not have an arcane caster. After the last conversion, I made him an evoker with the restricted schools of enchantment and illusion. The Dakon kept his feat of great fortitude and has a rat familiar to boost his fort save as high as possible. He has died twice in LG, due to failed fort saves (green prismatic ray and assassin's death attack.) His other feats are improved initiative, spell penetration, quicken spell, energy substitution (electricity) from Complete Arcane, born of the three thunders from CA, and sudden maximize from a metaorg. The Dakon has purchased gloves of dexterity, headband of intellect, amulet of health, cloak of resitance plus the usual wizard goodies like pearls of power. My PC has purchased several items that he loans to the cohort during the adventure like rods of extend and empower. The cohort blasts in the first round and then buffs up the party or debuffs the enemy in the next couple of rounds. In many adventures, he has been the difference between victory and defeat.

The point I'm trying to make is look at the party you normally play with and see where the weak link is. The Dakon has the stats to become anything but a Cha based cohort like bard or sorcerer.

Hi

Yes I know, Redgamer, I was going to take Craft Wand, instead I took Leadership.
Cohorts can't use any magic item creation feats, as it says in LGCS.
They can take them (for preerqs to prestige classes, feats, etc), just can't use them.

Hmmm. Nice one Morgan! personally I would have chosen Necromancy and Enchantment, .....but what the heck.

Just a quick question - since your cohort died/lost level, did he automatically level when you did? IE, did you recalculate your Leadership score, potentially allowing the cohort to regain lost levels?

Cheers

Edit: PS I meant 6th lvl feat, NOT 3rd as previuosly quoted

Yes, that's exactly the case that I ran into. My Cleric 6/Radiant Servant of Pelor 6 cohort died in "Here There Be Dragons". I had him raised because he had acquired some nifty magic items that I didn't want him to have to part with (Phylactery of Undead Turning and Sash of the Healer to be specific). When I leveled to 15th level, he bumped right back up to Cleric 6/Radiant Servant 7. It was a two level jump for him, but perfectly legal per the LGCS.

Yes, I did recalculate my cohort's level when my main PC gained a level. As Steve suggested, it's perfectly legal in LG.

As for restricting Necromancy, my cohort found and purchased several enemy wizards' spellbooks on various ARs that contained mostly necromancy spells. I'd cut my spell selection in half without Necromancy.

My sorcerer picked up the dakon cohort within an adventure or two of playing "Red Tide." His stats were too good to pass up, despite starting as a wizard. I've used him quite a bit.

For the first several months, I used good ol' Fel as a self-buffing barbarian spiked chain user. He was wizard3/bar2/ftr1/exotic weapon master1, or something like that. I was really shooting for the wraithstrike/power attack combo, but never really got a chance to take that for a ride. With a magic spiked chain, gauntlets of ogre power, enlarge person, and armbands of might, he hit fairly often for a silly amount of damage, anyway.

Upon conversion, however, I dropped his arcane levels entirely. Now he's a barbarian/fighter/exotic weapon master/occult slayer. It's fairly easy to get him into high-skill requirement prestige classes, I found, because he's so smart. He's now even more of a terror in melee combat than he was before; as I've given him Reckless Rage on top of Extra Rage, he rages every combat and doesn't take a round or two to cast spells like he used to.

Many people use the dakon as a buff for their primary character (I know of one 15th level monk who built his dakon as a mystic theurge to really stack up on buffing ability). However, my sorcerer usually buffs the dakon, and lets the dakon wade in to melee. Even though he's two levels lower than my sorcerer, the dakon is much more effective (and much more survivable; my sorcerer has died a couple of times and Fel never has).

Here's one interesting tidbit about the dakon I found out, though: even if you have to keep his wizard level, he's able to specialize. Wizards have to choose to specialize at first level, not at character creation. So, although his first wizard level is a generalist level, he can specialize "off screen" before advancing to 2nd level, and be a specialist wizard from then on. If you're using him as a gish, like I did, I recommend conjuration or diviner (Fel's see invisibility/glitterdust combo worked well several times; so well, in fact, that my sorcerer had to pick up those spells when I made Fel a straight melee combat monster).

Once my sorcerer hits 13th level, I'll have to make the decision whether to keep Fel or trade him in for an awakened dire wolf cohort (which I can't take until 13th level).

Anyway, I'm very happy with Fel. His good stats and great abilities make him a good cohort choice, even though he's a couple of levels behind.

One thing I'd really like to see, however, is a picture of a dakon. I have the description from the adventure, but an illustration of a dakon would be nice. Anyone know where I can find one?

Thanks,

Ron

Ron,

I can see what I can find for a Dakon picture, I seem to recall there being one in one of my greyhawk reference books. Toss me an email offlist (macabail gmail com ; add the right symbols ;) ) and I'll see what I can find you.

Also, I'm assuming you just forget to include the Wiz level in your new build, since you can't get rid of it (yes, I was mean that way).

Does anyone know the stats for Bridheleh (the cohort) from COR4-15 War of the Dust?

On my AR it says see appendix 4 but I never came around to running/reading this adventure so I have no idea.

Str 14, Dex 14, Con 12, Int 10, Wis 16, Cha 10. Ranger 2, favored enemy(Giant), max ranks in Handle Animal, Hide, Listen, Move Silent, Ride, Spot, Survival. PBS, Rapid Shot, WF(Longbow). Neutral.

Hmm, actually 30 point buy, but you can see the problems - 2 levels of Ranger and being 2 levels down are going to kill her ability to be a cleric. She doesn't make a great druid either as all her feats go bye-bye in Wild Shape. She can't be a Pious Templar of an archer god and/or pick up levels of Monk for a Zen Archer route by really maxxing out Wisdom. No initial Search, so she'll be playing catch up with Search and Disable Device if you go Rogue.

Hi

Finally got to use my Dakon cohort twice at Conception - a major con in UK.

I'm now 8th lvl - so I set him up as a Wiz/Warmage. (Stat bump in Cha).
Was hoping the new LGCS would have Ultimate Magus.

Hardly the optimal use of my Dakon, but hell, he was great to play. I ran him as the intelligent part of my double act Dwarf Cleric (Boccob)/Warmage is my main character. My Dwarf only has Int 12, so on occasion, when the Cohort (trained in Law) started his intellectual conversations Oskar (Dwarf) would just answer "yeah - whatever he said.."

Fek (Cohort) came in very useful as a spell flinger - in one mod we were ambushed, but with Clr/Warmage, Wiz/Warmage, and Wizard in party we weren't sure who ambushed who.... (Combat lasted about 2 rnds, I think, and that only to ensure the Paladins weren't left out...)!

Great mod, though bit one sided in combats. (I have Tan Bag Tricks, & pulled Bwn Bear for final combat).

Cheers

Quick question: If you have a cohort who wasn't played since the last conversion, is he eligible for rebuild? If so, couldn't you completely remove the wizard level with that rebuild?

I asked this when I originally converted him with the rebuild, the answer I received was "no" as he is certed with the level of wizard.

before my character was forceably retired (aka eaten), Fel'cheten'kin was a Wiz/Monk/Enlightened Fist

Strait Wiz6 with Combat Reflexes and EWP: Spiked Chain.

Yes, odd combo, but his primary spell is "Leomund's Tiny Hut" and he uses the reach of the spiked chain to disarm power attacking foes.

Since the spell has been closed* since the very beginning of 3.5, I thought it might be some sort of weird thingy-mabob. Wasn't too sure on what sort of thingy-mabob, which is why I asked. :)

*Ok, some terminology changes and such, but I think you know what I mean.

It wasn't always forbidden to authors...For a while, they were allowed to use it in modules. The Circle decided (wisely, in my opinion) to remove it from their usage as well (though there were some who did interesting things with it)...

A friend made an Enlightened Fist dakon cohort for his cleric. He wanted to do a spellsword, but you can't just assume he met the "defeated a foe through course of arms" clause, even if he was a pit fighter in his back story.

I think the awakened dire wolf cohort was from an early Geoff module. I wonder if I have access to it?

Hi Chris - good to see you on the boards.

Yep - 3 characters flinging lesser orbs in round one does kinda make the over zealous Paladins bit redundant!
(I suspect, and totally agrree with, that the GM just might have tweaked the tactics just so the paladins could actually roll a dice). :D

Oh, and what a final battle, though! definitely think the paladins really enjoyed that personal grudge!

I remember a certain Furyondy module from Y4. The final combat at APL4 was two awakened raccoons with druid levels. Their dire ape animal companions were just as bad as the spells. :ahem: We won the combat, but my rogue did get knocked unconscious. The worst part was getting the ire of a certain cat that has caused me some problems since then. :hides:

Glad to see that the awaken spell was banned.

Can't use a druid's animal companion for a mount for anything other than the druid as far as I know.

Also having the animal companion will no doubt make the cohort untenable, unless the druid has a ludicrous Cha score, which as I recall she doesn't.

Could be wrong though.

I want to know why the Dakon has no level adjustment, when its abilities skills etc, are way above ECL+0

I would like some triad response on that.
