| Blaznak05-05-07, 09:49 AM | Hello: I'm off for a two week stay in Japan, the bulk of which is going to be in Osaka. I'm unclear whether I'm going to find a 5 hour break from my friend and his family ("No, no, you are our guest. We will follow you everywhere at all times to make sure your time here is good." "uh, what if I just want to go to the park or something?" "Then we will take you and make sure you have a good time sitting by yourself with you." -I'm teasing a bit...) But I'm curious if there ARE any groups over there. If all would work out, it'd be cool to see/play a D&D game in Japan, ya know! Well, later! Jeffery A. |
| Nerax05-05-07, 09:54 AM | Try posting in the Ratik yahoo group as that is the region Japan is in: http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/ratik/ Hope this helps :D |
| LGMoses05-07-07, 01:51 AM | Is dnd big in Japan? Does it have a following at all really? |
| Reylance05-07-07, 01:40 PM | I have talked via e-mail with one person who has played Ratik modules in Japan (I think Tokyo); this group consists of all expatriates. |
| gomeztoo05-07-07, 09:52 PM | I'm in Japan at the moment (and found out japanese outlook hates my mail server). Gunma-ken area (north-west from Tokyo). Haven't seen any D&D here, not with the natives anyway. I only get glassy looks from my family-in-law when I mention it, but so does my own family, so that may not mean much. |
| NiTessine05-10-07, 04:11 AM | Mmh. The Japanese RPG culture is drastically different from what we're used to. Also, to my understanding, D&D hasn't been translated into Japanese. I suspect that all local LG players are expatriates or American military. |
| gomeztoo05-10-07, 07:15 AM | Given that very few japanese speak english well enough to read the rules, I fear you are right. Then again, amazing to have a conversation with my sister-in-law regarding Harry Potter and find out all the names were kept english in translation. |

Huh. I wonder how they're selling. I have hazy recollections of a lecturer at a con last year mentioning the Japanese RPG market is larger than the Western one, so there would reasonably be more room for niche products. Personally, I still suspect that all LG players are expatriates or American military. For one thing, I haven't heard of anyone translating modules. |
