| blood_kite04-18-05, 03:08 PM | After recently playing a year 4 Core mod the AR states that someone I saved will be my cohort and provided an alignment and level for this NPC. In parenthesis is said to 'see Appendix 4'. I've only played a dozen or so Mods and I've haven't seen anything like this before. I also didn't see anything on it in the Living Greyhawk boards but I haven't been reading them long enough to know if this topic has been addressed and simply fell off. It created a number of questions that I did not have a chance to ask the DM or Senior DM about, so am I hoping someone here can help me out or point me in the right direction. First, does this AR provided cohort require me to have the Leadership feat? This looks like it would be the harder question because my copy of LGCS v4.2 does not seem to provide any guidance on cohorts not gained by Leadership. I've tried looking at both sides of this question and these are the two arguments I've come up with so far. On the side of not allowing this NPC as a free cohort it is fairly simple; I don't have the Leadership feat, thus I can't have a cohort. The AR listed this NPC simply to show a cohort you COULD take. This is the simplest ruling that requires the least amount of thinking and work. The other side of the coin looks a lot more confusing to me. The AR provides an NPC who will be your cohort. Why would the AR list a cohort you COULD take? Why list the alignment and level of this NPC when I could just write up a cohort at the level allowed by my Leadership score (assuming I had one); using what I know of the NPC my character saved and give it the same name, saying that this cohort is the person my character saved? My character has saved NPC's from certain death before, although saving them was often the point of the point of the Mod. In this case saving the NPC involved going out of our way and even impeded our mission because of resources we had to expend. To me this looks like another point towards a free cohort, if we hadn't gone to a lot of extra trouble the NPC would simply have been crossed off the AR. I am not too worried about which way a ruling might go since I don't particularly need a cohort. But I am also confused by the reference next to the AR entry. There is no appendix 4 in the LGCS v4.2, nor was there one in the copy of LGCS v3.? that I found. I haven't been able to find a copy of LGCS v2 online to see if it might have appendixes that the AR refers to. Any ideas or answers? I didn't want to give out too much information about the Mod. Please excuse the sentence structure. I always have problems arranging my thoughts into simple sentences. |

As for leadership, yep you need it...She's a cohort, you need leadership (as has been the case for several other modules that offer cohorts)...And that requirement is listed in the text of Appendix 4 of that module (assuming it's the one I think it is)... And the reason you'd take a cohort from a module is primarily role-playing, your cohort having connections to you through events in the game... |

| oroborous04-19-05, 10:12 PM | I've never been into cohorts. I never needed a Patsy to be morally wounded for me, so my question is twofold. First, does gaining access to an AR cohort mean that you have to have the leadership at the time and dismiss your current cohort to take them (and gaining the flighty reputation listed in the DMG), or does that mean that sometime in the future you can take leadership and seek out this cohort? Second, does this special cohort start out at the level of cohort you attract per the DMG or whatever meager level is listed on the AR? |
| Sargh04-20-05, 10:27 AM | On a similiar line of questioning, does a cohort gained through an AR have to start with the class listed in the AR? |
| Casebier04-21-05, 02:33 PM | Well, if they go to the trouble of creating the cohort and writing him/her/IT out, then yes, they start at the class and levels listed. After that starting point, you get to choose how that NPC would most likely level up (and if you're cheesy, it will be completely different from what the NPC would choose for themself.) Some Cohorts are also non-regular races, like Modron, Awakened Bears, and an ape-thingy... John Rogers, Jr |
