| Puggle Halfwine07-20-06, 06:47 AM | Hey guys, I was thinking of building a wizard for the move to Ratik. However, if you have the Arcane Disciple feat, can you recall that spell with a Pearl of Power so you can cast it again? Anyone know? |
| Madfox1107-20-06, 07:05 AM | If I remember correctly, the arcane disciple feat adds the spells from one domain to your spell list. It still follows all the rules of regular spells, so you need to write the spells in your spellbook (or in case of sorcerers or bard select them as spells known) and prepare it like any regular spell. So yes, if you have the spell prepared you can use a pearl to recall it. Note that clerics can recall their domain spells through a pearl of power as well. |

The wording is different and the wording of a Pearl is ambigious - a cleric is not limited to preparing a maximum of one casting of the spell per day, he can only cast domain spells through domain slots. As an example, a 15th level Cleric with the Water domain could memorize a Cone of Cold and an Empowered Cone of Cold. Arcane Disciple specifically says, "Each day, you may prepare(or cast, if you cast spells without preparation) a maximum of one of these domain spells of each level." A Wizard with an 14 Wisdom and the Healing Domain could not use it to memorize a Cure Light Wounds and an Empowered Cure Light Wounds. A Pearl makes "The spell is then prepared again, just as if it had not been cast." This creates the two problems: The use of the word again - the spell is prepared a 2nd time. The restriction is presumably set by the deity, not by the arcane caster. Using a Pearl in this fashion is essentially tricking your own deity. There's a pretty significant spirit of the rules problem in doing this. ------ I'm not saying either of those two problems are set in stone right, but unless Madfox11 is wearing his Circle cap, I'd expect table variation. |
| clik_ml07-21-06, 08:47 AM | That's a lot more artistic license with the rules than I expect a judge to be taking. I don't expect to find any table variation on pearls of power with domain spells before I find some variation on the "death is flavor text" gag. |
| Mommy was an Orc07-21-06, 10:06 AM | Cleric domain spells sure - they shouldn't have table variation - the only limit on casting per day is number of domain slots and they can Pearl to recover the slot. Have the right feats and be 17th level and you can cast a particular domain spell 9 times in a day without Pearls. Arcane Disciple's a different story as they're limited to a maximum of one prep per day. That's a lot more artistic license with the rules than I expect a judge to be taking. I don't expect to find any table variation on pearls of power with domain spells before I find some variation on the "death is flavor text" gag. |
| Namarus07-21-06, 03:10 PM | I'm not sure what all the arguing is about. If you would allow a cleric to recover his domain spell via a pearl of power, then you should allow any other character with a domain to recover their spell via the pearl of power. I don't believe that there is any trickery involved. Otherwise Pearls of power would be disallowed to clerics in general. For example, a cleric might cast his cure light wounds spell (non-domain), and recover it via a pearl of power. By your reasoning he is tricking his deity into giving him another sure light wounds spell. Clearly a nonsense and not support by the rules. However, I would suggest that you contact Customer Support, and ask the question. It might make the FAQ, and at which point the ruling would be offical for the campaign. |
| Drezden07-21-06, 04:35 PM | I don't think there will be any problem using Pearls and Arcane Disciple. I would expect almost no table variation on this, Andy's comments notwithstanding. Daren |
| Mommy was an Orc07-21-06, 07:32 PM | If you would allow a cleric to recover his domain spell via a pearl of power, then you should allow any other character with a domain to recover their spell via the pearl of power. Again, Clerics are not inherently limited in number of times per day that they may cast any spell on their lists or in their domains. They are limited simply by the number of available slots that can be used for that spell. Extra Domain allows a Wizard 'to memorize one domain spell per level per day.' Arcane Disciple allows a Wizard to 'Each day, you may prepare a maximum of one of these domain spells of each level.' As Arcane Disciple's language on specifically number of spells allowed to be prepped is different than that of either a cleric or a Wizard with an actual Domain, there is no reason why I should treat it identically. |
| jokem07-28-06, 03:12 PM | I wanted to create a character with Arcane Disciple but was not able to in Heroes Forge. Is there a link to an updated version of this? |
| Skole Morgenrood08-04-06, 10:08 AM | Arcane Disciple allows a Wizard to 'Each day, you may prepare a maximum of one of these domain spells of each level.' I'd argue that the bold use of the word level refers not to spell level but spell slot level. i.e. you can only use one of your first level spell slots to memorize a domain spell, one of your second level slots to memorize a domain spell etc. therefore a cure light wounds in a 1st level slot and an empowred cure light in a third level slot doesn't break the rule. Secondly, if you wanna get pedantic, if using a pearl of power is treated as having not cast the spell in the first place, then by your own argument you're can't possibly be preparing it a second time, since it was never cast. |
| blood_kite08-04-06, 01:22 PM | A Pearl makes "The spell is then prepared again, just as if it had not been cast." This creates the two problems: The use of the word again - the spell is prepared a 2nd time. While I see your point with the wording of the PoP ability, it could easily be argued differently. I think what the sentence means is: The spell is returned to the prepared state in the caster's head, just as if it had not been cast. The caster spent no time studying his spellbook to place the spell back in his head, the magic of the PoP simply restored the incantation to his memory. |
