An AH "can" bestow harmless spells on the FC as if it were an animal. Does this mean that they can choose to view it as a magical beast, also? Can an AH alter self it's FC into a five hit dice magical beast? Additionally a magical beast has a d10 hit die, fighter bab, darkvision 60', and 'proficient in no armor'. RoW states "The Hit Dice, hit points, saving throws, feats and skills of the familiar companion are determined as normal for an animal companion." Does that mean they -don't- gain the d10 hit dice? Or is that just a clarification that they aren't treated like a familiar? If it's a "war trained animal" do they retain their featless armor proficiency? (What the heck denotes 'war trained'!?!) |

So basically other druids, or spell casters with target 'animal' spells cannot effect the companion familiar. However, your own target 'animal' spells effect the companion normally. It would gain the following from the magical beast type. - Darkvision out to 60 feet and low-light vision. Thats about it. Everything else it gains froms being an animal type. HD, BAB, Skills, Saves, etc.... The nice thing about the companion familiar is the intelligence of the beast along with the fact that you can use a number of different types of spells on it. - It counts as a humaniod (if the owner is a humaniod) for sharing spell effects. I often share enlarge person with my companion. - It counts as an animal for animal type buff spells from you. - It counts as a magical beast ... I guess for ranger's favoured enemies. I cannot off the top of my head think of any spells for magical beasts only. It keeps the animal traits, since it is an augmented animal, so if it is war trained, and then becomes a magical beast it should still keep those traits. The problem, however, is a little complex here. Since it has an intelligence, it doesn't need tricks. So as would war trained still apply, or would you have to buy the various armour proficiencies as feats for the companion? I have no idea. |

You can ignore the type if it restricts the casting (ie, enlarge person). But you can't Alter self your riding dog into an orc. You -can- alter self your rididing dog into a dire ape, though. If you've read anything to the contrary, I'd like to see it. |

Or you could be the first kid on your block to alter self your Huge Companion/Familar into a 5 Headed Hydra Of course this is much more fun with Polymorph E |

Provided of course they are cast by you. |
