Can characters who have cohorts release them from service?

There doesn't seem to be any guidance on this in the Core rules or in the LGCS. If it can be done, are there any penalties to attracting a new cohort, such as a TU duration or GP expense until the next one can be attracted as is done when a cohort death is caused?

It's in there, reread the cohort section.

Page 42 of the March 2006 LGCS:

Paraphrasing: You may release your cohort in search of a new one. It requires 500gp and 4 TUs to find a new cohort and you suffer the -1 leadership penalty for being a fickle leader.

Nice quote; I didn't want to give a page number since this thread will still be around when the new LGCS invalidates that page number.

Edited to properly denote the 2006 LGCS.

Ah! Yes, my eyes were brushing past it over and over.

Thanks!

Hmmm....

A buddy had a dwarven fighter 7 Leadership and a Dakon cohort. A couple of reverse levels ("Grandpa! Didn't you die? Wait a minute.....") later found him deciding on what feats to take at 6th level THIS time. Leadership didn't make the short list this time around.

So, he had leadership and cohort. Then he lost leadership (and cohort?). Then he did not regain leadership.

Does he have a fickle penalty if he takes it in the future?

Is the Dakon gone for good?

From the LGCS 596: Level Loss and Cohorts
If you lose enough levels so you are within two levels or at an equal or lower level than your cohort, your cohort does not abandon you, but the cohort does not adventure with you until you regain the lost levels. However, if the character ever drops below 6th level (therefore losing the Leadership feat), the cohort immediately abandons you disheartened by your failure.

So I presume the Dakon is gone for good, unless you can re-use the favor to attract a new Dakon. He left you.

The good news is that since you didn't dismiss him, and you aren't responsible for his death, you should suffer no penalties on your Leadership score for attracting a new Cohort.

Hmmm. I don't think he really liked the cohort anyway... :)

Thanks Bob.

Is the Dakon gone for good? The LGCS 596 says this. However, if the character ever drops below 6th level (therefore losing the Leadership feat), the cohort immediately abandons you disheartened by your failure.I would say he wouldn't acquire the fickle penalty, but, yeah, he has lost THAT Dakon for good. The cohort abandons the character, rather than the character abandoning the cohort.
