So you can't move diagonally around corners, ok. But in a recent session someone posed the question can you move diagonally past enimies? Do enemies count as corners? The DM ruled that they don't, count as corners that is ,and that his Monster could move diaganolly past our PC's who had him penned in on all 4 sides with the diagonal spaces open.

And the monster moved out on a diagonal.

Opinions?

no but corners are the enemies. on the grid below, the 8's are empty squares, the P's are PC's, and the O is the Orc BBEG who can stand up to the 4 fighters pinning him in. The orc CAN move onto the 8's via a 5 foot step.

The DM and the player should have kept reading (meaning, no ruling was necessary, the rule is already spelled out). :) On page 146 of the PHB, it states, "You can’t move diagonally past a corner (even by taking a 5-foot step). You can move diagonally past a creature, even an opponent."

Also, look at some of the example pictures on page 144 -- Tordek is moving diagonally past the hobgoblin's square without issue.

While you might need a five foot space to fight in, you are not, personally, a five foot cube (I hope). It's not quite the same.

exactly

whereas the brick wall totally fills the entire square right to the corner .. the halfing only takes up a few percent and is moving about within that 5' area .. he doesnt inflate like a balloon to fill it

Though that'd be neat to see. Sort of like Violet Beauregard.
