I recently played in a mod that gave kaorti armor access on the AR. From the price and the description of the item, it sounds like it would be considered masterwork, but nothing clarifies this either way.

I would like to have it from a roleplaying perspective, but unless it's mw so that it can have enchantments put on it, it's pretty useless (mw chain shirt is better, in same price range, and is upgradeable).

So, I was looking for clarification of whether this armor can be enchanted or not.

thanks!

I don't think you need spoiler space since you didn't mention a module.

Where does kaorti armor come from? You need to look at the original material instead of what's written on the AR.

well there's nothing in the AR, just the name, book, and page number (fiend folio, page 110ish I believe). It's the Fiend Folio entry up basing this on.

If the Fiend Folio doesn't say it's masterwork, then it's not masterwork, plain and simple...

It sounds like the adventure in question is COR4-19 That Which Was Not Meant to be Known. Characters may earn the kaorti ribbon dagger and resin suit (armor). Neither item is very compelling. The resin suit only grants a +3 armor bonus. The dagger requires an Exotic Weapon feat to use.

The cool item on that Adventure Record is the oppurtunity to earn an adamantine short (+1 at APL4).

not to mention that it gives humanoids the hives when they don the armor!

Treat it as if it is non masterwork. Therefore, when you buy it tack on the price of 150 gp for the master work quality. Henceforth, it is therefore master work. Upgrade it if you like and when you like. Just have the documentation.

Found the answer on an old web article:

http://www.wizards.com/?x=dnd/re/20031014a

"A suit of resin armor works like masterwork armor, but also protects a kaorti wearer from the effects of the Material Plane."

I realize it breaks you out in hives and isn't quite optimal, but my character worships the god of anguish so he's all for it :)

However, that paragraph in context indicates that not all resin items are masterwork and must be specifically crafted as such...

"Making magical versions of kaorti items is possible. The item maker must use resin it has excreted itself, and also must have the appropriate craft skill and item creations feats. Kaorti resin is particularly suitable for bladed weapons such as daggers and swords. Any resin item must be made as a masterwork item."

Unfortunately, AR access to an item does not automatically grant access to the masterwork counterpart...

I must disagree - while there is some context in that same paragraph in terms of magical items, the statements "Any resin item must be made as a masterwork item" and "A suit of resin armor works like masterwork armor..." read to me as that to create a resin item (and in this case resin armor), it must be masterwork - ie there are no non-masterwork resin items. In fact, it does not really cover resin magic armor creation at all, the process it gives is in regards to resin weapons. The same sentence that says it works like a masterwork item also gives it the property of protecting from the prime material, which it definitely did in the mod and is reference to in the FF.

Similar terminology is used in the SRD describing darkwood - "Any wooden or mostly wooden item (such as a bow, an arrow, or a spear) made from darkwood is considered a masterwork item " and mithril "Weapons or armors fashioned from mithral are always masterwork items as well". Other types like cold iron and alchemical silver don't mention masterwork at all.

Thus, I read the item access to resin armor on the AR the equivalent of listing a darkwood shield, or a mithril chain shirt - they also do not list as masterwork items as this would be redundant - the material that makes up the item is by definition masterwork, and a nonmasterwork item is not possible.

I still would like to get a confirmation from an official source however.

See, that's not really "similar terminology"...It doesn't say "Kaorti Resin items are considered masterwork items" it says in order for them to be made magical, they must be constructed as masterwork...In the same way I might say "for a weapon to be made magical it must be constructed as a masterwork weapon"...

That article mentions normal and masterwork items (which should be a clue they're not all masterwork) and It also mentions a specific process (with the maker using extra amounts of his own resin) that is not the norm for Kaorti items...Since there is a specific process described to make permenent masterwork items, a process that is different than normal Kaorti item creation, that seems indicate that masterwork items are not the norm...

However, as you note, that article is primarily about weapons, so it may not apply to armor...Though it seems a bit odd that non-masterwork weapons exist, but not armor...

The Circle has looked at this and we have decided that the Kaorti armor is NOT inherently masterwork. There is no mention that it is.
