Can I take someone with me when I sandswim.. If I could.. I would assume that it would reduce my movement considerably...

The reason for my inquiry: could someone create a grapple monkey.. then pull people into the sand.. and leave them there to suffocate.

Damn cool idea :D...

Since Asheratai have a listed speed for that movement, it would seem if they win a grapple check, they should be able to move the grapple in that direction, if they wish...

There seems like there should be something preventing this, but I cannot think of it off hand...

I guess since there is nothing specifly stating that you can't pull people into the dirt... and since its a valid tactic for water creatures... it would work for the earth creatures as welll... I think the official rulling shoudl probably be No tho.. it would set a horible presidence.. since it could be used against players.

Personally I would never allow it and I think that the rule for medium load reducing the movement to 5ft essentially means that moving at half-speed while grappling might mean that you cannot move at all. (i'm not entire clear on this)

Heavy load of course means that there is no way Asherati could drag somebody into sand (as he cannot move into sand at all). So you would really need bull-strenghted/enlarged Asherati to drag any but the smallest of creature into the sand. Draggin even an adult human, much less a 220pound half-orc, and assorted equipment is not easy you know :D

Ah, heavy load cannot sandswim...I knew there would be some rule that could be interpreted to prevent it (and I think that's a decent interpretation)...I'm just not that familiar with the Sandstorm stuff to know how all the new races work...

As for the weight capacity to do it, a properly min/maxed could...My one min/maxed character, 9th level, when he turns into a black bear (via bear warrior) has a carrying capacities of 918/1836/2760...Next level (his second of warshaper) those numbers will go to 1596/3198/4800...

At 15th, when he can finally turn into a brown bear, those numbers will be 11184/22368/33600...Push or drag 168,000 pounds...With a bull strength, that number becomes 288,000 pounds or 130 metric tonnes... He's a strong boy...:D

cool, a stron Lg asherati.. who pops out of the sand (hidden).. pickpockets your heavy objects.. drops them on the ground.. then drags you down to your death..

Even a 5' move down would likely leave the person helplessly trapped in the sand.. 10' would cause them to hold their breath.. Personally.. when I grapple.. I would pull them backwards over my head.. and headfirst into the sand... that way they are upside down when I let them go.. even 5' down they are suffocating.. and helpless... Since I'm now holding them (and I am completly under the sand).. I have total concealment.. yet he is still a target for my allies attacks...

I doubt it will work. Asherati might have physical means to pass through sand (hence his special ability) but he does not grant it to any creature he might grapple. Hence you are not in same space and cannot grapple. Sand is not water you know...

By same rules you cannot grapple your opponent while staying in the sand (though you can start a grapple under sand, with normal rules for concealement) as you will be sharing the square after a succesful grapple.

Therefore when you start draggin someone into the sand, a DM can (easily) rule that he will not come through the sand with you and that's it.

So while this might appear as yet another 'Let's give PCs another munchkin tool so LG becomes even more easier' ability, I highly doubt it can work.

If you're a bear you aren't an Asherati though..
