From Dispel Confusion Vol.1, No.2 (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=lg/lgif/20050726a):
Q: Do bhuka exist in the Living Greyhawk campaign?

A: No, bhuka do not exist. Asherati PCs receive Ancient Flan as a bonus language to replace Bhuka.
This means that the entry in Sandstorm (for LG purposes) should read:
Automatic Languages: Asherati, Common. Bonus Languages: Ancient Flan, Goblin, Giant.

For the Bright Sands campaign arc, I created an asherati ranger, Int 12, who speaks Asherati, Common, and Flan, the last chosen because of his intelligence bonus, and because this is listed as a language choice in the LGCS*.

Was I allowed to chose 'Flan' in the first place, since it's not on the asherati list of bonus languages?
Does he now speak 'Ancient Flan' instead? ;)
Can someone who speaks 'Ancient Flan' speak with (and understand) someone who speaks only 'Flan'?
Can someone who speaks 'Ancient Flan' read and/or write 'Flan' as well?

* LGCS v.4.2, page 9: "When picking bonus languages, new characters are free to choose from the languages and dialects listed on pages 11-12 of the Living Greyhawk Gazetteer, except for Druidic, Ferral, and Lendorian Elven. The most prominent of these languages are the human racial languages: Ancient Baklunish, Flan, Old Oeridian and Ancient Suloise. New PCs may also select Touv (see previous paragraph) as a starting language." Note that it says "new characters", with no restriction on race.

Yes change it to ancient flan and thus you speak ancient flan now.

unfortunately you would not be able to speak flan fluently (you would understand bits and pieces is my thinking) same goes with writing it and such. it would be spotty at best.

Which begs the question, why would they speak Ancient Flan in the first place? If the Asherati as a race are descended/created from the Sulm (which are an ancient Flan tribe in the first place -- per "A Brief History of the Bright Desert", from the Blight on Bright Sands Sourcebook), then isn't the Asherati language really Ancient Flan anyways? It makes much more sense that the bonus language should be Flan (the modern variant), since, as a race of the Bright Lands, they would be trading with the Flan nomads of the region.

It was always my impression (and I might be mistaken) that there is only one Flan language. Let's face it, the list has "Old Oeridan","Ancient Baklunish", and Ancient Suloise as starting languages along side Flan.

I have made the mistake myself of calling my bonus language "Ancient Flan" instead of "Flan" and believe the addition of "Ancient" in the Dispel Confusion is merely a typo...
