What is the limit to the spread of PC levels that can compose a party in LG?

Theoretically there is no limit. You work out the APL from the players sitting at the table and a brand new 1st lvl PC may be with a 15th lvl PC, if such a creature already exists. I've played APL6 where a 2nd and 11th lvl PC were at the same table, it was scary for us low level types when max damage crits hardly scrached the critters I can tell you. :D

In reality if a PC is more than two levels away from the APL then they get half XP & gold so in general you'll find that most players at the table are within four levels of each other, eg an APL10 table will generally be 8th through 12th level PCs.

The only other level limitation is that a PC may be no more than three levels above the adventures max APL, eg a 12th lvl PC may not play an APL2-8 adventure.

Hope that helps :)

Thanks, that was a good & complete answer... scary, but good.

...hopefully no one will charm the high level barb with the 8 wisdom.

A PC who is more than two levels below the APL get 1/2 gold and 1/2 experience. A player who is more than two levels above the APL get full gold and 1/2 experience.

If I played a regional module with my regional PC instead of an out of region PC last year, we'd have played at APL 8, with levels from 2 to 14 and no one would have received full experience.

Ed,

Is that rule in the new LGCS 3.0 anywhere? I looked, but couldn't find it. If they haven't yet decided to move it there, then it still remains a module-specific rule, and not a campaign-wide rule. Mind you, I can't imagine a module that wouldn't hold to that guideline, but we have had non-standard module XP/gold awards before (Isles of Woe, for example).

Yes, it's on the bottom of page 58 under "Adventure Boiler Plate". Not the easiest thing to find, even when you know what you are looking for.

Thanks, Ed. I would have though it'd have been listed on the AR description, when it details XP and Gold gained from the scenario. Maybe next revision they'll move it.

Which way do you round?

Example: if the APL is 3, do you play it at APL 2 or 4?

Hi

It's normalised rounding.

If the APL is 2.1 to 2.4 you round down to APL2, if the APL calc comes out to 2.5 to 2.9 you round up to APL3.

If you are calculated to be at an even APL, ie APL2,4,6 etc, you play at that APL.

If you are calculated to be an odd APL, ie APL3,5,7 etc, you get to choose to 'play up' to the next APL higher or 'play down' to the next lowest APL. So an APL3 party could play at APL2 or APL4 it is their choice.

IMO you should only play up if you have a balanced and strong party, ie if you calculate out at an APL of 3.3 and have a balanced party then play up, if not then I'd generally play down.

Hope that made sense, cheers :)

That's both a good answer and good advise about the party mix influencing rounding. Thanks.

I think that is a great place for it, Steve_MND. I also pored over the AR chapter looking for the XP rule - and found it in the FAQ near the end of the sourcebook.

Moving that XP information to chapter four is a great idea. :)

You now may not play a character in an adventure if you are more than three levels above the APL.... LGCS3.0

As I understand it you may not play a PC that is 4no levels above the maximum APL for the scenario unless the scenario max APL is APL12. LGCS 3.0 p11.

eg a scenario that supports APL2-6 is not playable by 10th lvl PCs, if the scenario supports APL2-12 anyone can play it.

As I understand it.
