| beyowulf06-09-05, 05:55 PM | Say you have an animal, like say a riding dog. Now suppose an NPC or PC druid casts Awaken on it. Can the awakened animal continue to accompany you? Can it gain levels? |
| JohnduBois06-09-05, 06:24 PM | This question is irrelevant to Living Greyhawk. As of the LGCS 4.2, the Awaken spell is not permitted in the campaign. |
| King Kashue06-09-05, 06:32 PM | This question is irrelevant to Living Greyhawk. As of the LGCS 4.2, the Awaken spell is not permitted in the campaign. And even when it was allowed, it was NPC only...And even if it were allowed, spell effects do not carry from module to module... |
| Gilgiga of the Hunt06-10-05, 12:06 PM | I it would still follow you as an NPC, even if smart it'll still look to you as its "master." Your DM might make you take ladership or a similar feat to keep the mount close. |

Your DM might make you take ladership or a similar feat to keep the mount close. The reason why I asked is, supposing an awakened animal, such would naturally gain experience, and 'levels' or at more hit die. It would be unreasonable for an awakened animal not to. But there is no mechanism(that I know of) outside of familiars, animal companions, and paladin's mount, for regular animals to gain levels. This makes survival for regular animals difficult at higher APLs. I was thinking that if Awaken were in the game, there might be some way of remedying this situation. However, the point is made moot since 'Awaken' is no longer an option. |

| JohnduBois06-12-05, 02:20 AM | That would depend on the animal... In Furyondy, where all animals are to be shot on sight due to the recurrence of awakened animals (but no plants), it was possible to obtain an awakened dire bear (I think) cohort for one adventure. I wasn't around RPGA events yet, but I'm told it was pretty sick and wrong. |

Yes well, if the scuttlebutt I've heard is correct, a certain Furyondy author is one of the big reasons no one is allowed to use Awaken any more... |

| JohnduBois06-12-05, 03:51 PM | That's what I've heard, too. Oddly enough, it was a different author that wrote the cohort. The author you're thinking of only uses awakened animals to hurt PC's. Also, I've heard that the author you're referring to may have received special permission from the Circle to re-use currently existing awakened animals, which may be interesting. There's a certain cat that my secondary character has to stick it to. |
| SteveMND06-13-05, 10:02 AM | Keep in mind that while the Awaken spell is "forbidden' is LG, that doesn't mean that it doesn't exist at all -- rather, it just means that it won't be used 'onscreen'. The results of it can still be seen on ARs, etc. (such as permanancy, etc.) There are one or two ARs that I know of that allow Awakened animals to be made available to the PCs (as cohorts, special mounts, etc.), but in all cases, exactly how they work and what their restrictions are are clearly spelled out. |

Actually, I'm pretty sure it means it can't exist in the Campaign for any NPC or PC...Awaken wasn't always restricted, it was NPC only, which is why you have awakened cohorts... From the LGCS p. 24: -NPC Only: These are usable by authors only. They may not be posessed by player characters. -Restricted: These are not used in the LIVING GREYHAWK campaign. Seems pretty cut and dry to me... And if you've seen permanency on an AR, I'd like to know about it (obviously not if it's a current module though)... |

Nope, "NPC only" means that NPC's may have it on their spell list in a module. So it might be possiable (through various means) for a PC to get one of those spells cast by the NPC. "Restricted" means that no PC, may have it, and that no NPC can ever have it on their spell list in a module. Some of these spells are still availiable to have been cast "Off camera". Awaken is one example of this, as are some uses of Permanacy. It isn't clear in the LGCS and really should be, but it is clear in the LG Admin. Handbook. Lance W. Pale Triad P.O.C. |

Ah...Well, that's annoying... So, does it explain in the LG admin handbook how authors can have entire buildings or areas under permanent dimensional anchors without those areas glowing green (as per the spell description) and Dimensional anchor being a spell that CANNOT be made permanent (as per the spell description of both spells)? |

Easy. Artistic reasons;) That's how they held that giant coffee cup suspended 3 miles above the ground in Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy IIRC (the book/radio show, not the horrible film version). This would, moreover, be a very uneconomical use of resources. One can get much the same effect from a Forbiddance, which has a bigger area, leaves no visible sign of its presence, and is always permanent. No deus ex machina required. It would be very expensive to use on a whole complex, because of its material component, but what is the point of being an Evil Genius if you do not have some gps to splash around? A parallel case which springs to mind (and one which I am sure Aindros will recall) is an incident in a particular Regional module where one discovers that a particular set of bad guys have the hitherto unmentioned ability to generate a 120ft. radius antimagic field with no caster at the centre of it. It sets up a neat combat, but a little more justification for how they can do this would have been nice... |

As for the ring, the module states it is created by the Captain dragging a Beholder's eye around the area...Not sure how well that works, but at least that's got style... :D On a side note, I am at a loss recognizing your user name...Might I assume a classical connection? |

On a side note, I am at a loss recognizing your user name...Might I assume a classical connection? You may indeed. It is the Greek word for a particular sort of water receptacle (like an ewer, or a beaker, or...) which has a certain appropriateness in light of my surname, and my profession. :) |

| Medicelious-Melharmonac06-22-05, 08:55 AM | There are awakened animals in LG but you have to gain access to them through a mod. There was a Y2 Geoff mod that gave access to an Awaken Dire Wolf which they since erratta'd to a Cohort. In theory you could potential get a special mission to obtain such a cohort but I would not count on it. Medic |
| JohnduBois06-22-05, 02:25 PM | In Year 2, Awaken wasn't a restricted spell. Only the most recent version of the LGCS restricted it, in part (I've heard) due to a couple Furyondy modules. |

| Casebier07-18-05, 11:57 AM | I think the Legendary portion of that monster added traits similiar to Awaken. (I'm guessing you're talking about a certain toothy creature) |
| oroborous07-20-05, 03:35 AM | There is a legend, and I'm not sure if it ever came to be in-game, that one of the gelatinous cubes that scours the Dyvers sewer system was awakened and deputized as a member of the Sewer Patrol. |
