Hey all,

I'm signed up to host and play in this event Saturday. Our judge just called, and says that the adventure looks like it's set at APL 2, even though the ARs are set at APL 4 and 5.

Is there a web enhancement for this one too? The judge has the mod, and the download from the RPGA website. Is there anything else?

Thanks,

I haven't heard of a web enhancement, and the ear-to-the-ground webmaster of www.tassek.anang.com/blurbs.html hasn't either!

The 'APL 4' is, I think, to accomodate all the ELs within the LG system so that players get an appropriate level of reward, and to discourage first level PCs from playing. I think PCs higher than 2nd are also somewhat discouraged but more on the grounds that they'll find it too easy. From what I can tell, the published adventure is designed for four PCs of 2nd level. I've not read it, of course, but that's what it says on the cover!

My experience running Scourge of the Howling Horde was that six 1st level PCs built by experienced players expecting an LG intro didn't have that much of a challenge. Certainly at no point did I feel like I was likely to kill a character. I don't know if this is built to the same assumptions but it's likely.

The mod is designed for characters to start at 2nd level and go to 5th during the mod. As this is LG, it doesn't give out the same amount of XP that the mod does.

So, if you start at 2nd, you'll be a little on the weak side at the end of the mod. If you start at 3rd and level to 4th after the 1st AR, it is probably just about right. Oh, and the mod can run a long time(when I went through it, it took 9 hours with the DM blazing through encounters and when I ran it, it took 13 hours - partially because the 5th level had a curse that made everyone want to get out of his way)

SPOILER!!

this mod also has a wierd text at the frount that spesificaly tells the DM to make the adventure more difficult if you have more or better then 5 or 6 level 2 characters does this apply to LG also if you ran straight through it and did not get a break then it would probably make it much more difficult as you wouldnt level

I ran both Scourge of the Howling Horde and Barrow in one great big gameday saturday. They got to midway through fourth level by the end of it, but it definetly seemed tougher than APL 2. I just bought Sinister Spire and am anxious to run these characters through it.

I've found overall that a balanced party of people who play well can generally get through an adaptable without -too- much worry. And yet, I still find them to be an incredible amount of fun.

Thanks for the input, everyone.

Oh for those that have them leave your centaur at home. This mod is not kind to our four footed friends. They tend to slow down the mod durring the out of combat portions of barrows. If the centaur has a solid build and the right feats combat does end quicker but this holds true for every charactor.

I think you'll enjoy it. It has varying challenges and all kinds of encounter stuff. I played with a 2nd level wizard that leveled almost to 4th.

p.s. I think an all 2nd level table would get housed...

I am telling you right now if you run Barrows and no one in the party is higher than 3 you will have a TPK. A 3 should be your lowest level at the table. I play a solid 3 fighter that became a four after the first AR. Still I was nearly killed several times if not for the fifth level cleric and the "happy stick". While I did have a Second Wind it's a one trick pony. Once it's used thats it if you go above 0 HP on your D6 roll and are hit again your dead. Trust me its APL 4 for a reason

I have seen multiple multiple tables say that it's completely tractable at the levels published, if you don't make some of the errors our table did.

We were too willing to stand back and let the heavies try and do everything... We definitely made it harder on ourselves.

Not that I have seen this particular mod. But now that my gaming group is firmly entrenched in Greyhawk, things can get ugly when they play a game not designed for Living Greyhawk. Its a fairly major change in the pacing of how fights go, when to rest, how many expendables to use etc. And it can take a few scares to get them out of that mad dash 4 hours or the world ends mindset.

you dont need to do this in 4 hours(in fact i would say its impossible)
