| awroe03-13-07, 08:23 AM | I've just received (Core) access to a Belt of Dwarvenkind, and I'm trying to decide whether it is worth purchasing. The charcter is a human finessing Chain fighter/rogue. Wearing the belt means not being able to wear a Belt of Giant Strength. Finesse means the belt would just give me +2 on strength-based checks and +3 on (2H-)damage, rather than the +2 on attacks. I gain the ability to speak Dwarven, some charisma modifiers that are unlikely to be used, 60' Darkvision, Stonecunning (+2 on search for stone-based traps!), +2 enhancement to Con and +2 resistance vs poison, spells or spell-like effects. However, most of these effects don't stack with similar items - the con boost doesn't stack with an amulet, the resistance boost doesn't stack with a vest, the Darkvision doesn't stack with Goggles of Darkvision. So the question is: Is it worth 14900gp to have all these effects in one item (thus freeing up other slots). AW. |

But...the problem is long-term, you're going to want that Amulet of Con at a better value than +2. If I had access to the Goggles, I'd go with the Goggles... Well, it's more a question of slots - the Dwarvenkind costs 2900 more than the goggles, but takes up a different slot. It also gives 'Speak Dwarven' and '+2 to search for stone traps' for the 2900gp - abilities that won't be duplicated by other items I'm likely to find. So I suppose the question is - am I going to get more value out of a Belt of Giant Strength +4 (the highest I'm likely to buy) or out of an eye-slot item (e.g. eyes of the eagle). Bearing in mind that I might be able to buy a +2 Str Ioun stone if I get access. |
| jstorrie03-13-07, 11:01 AM | It is a question of slots, but you're not planning ahead far enough. You will want an Amulet of Constitution +4. At that point, your Belt of Dwarvenkind is wasted. Unless your character is going for a Periapt of Wisdom (Cleric, Monk, Druid?) - and your character is not - there is no compelling reason to pick up the Belt of Dwarvenkind. |
| LachlarlanIII03-13-07, 11:12 AM | If you absolutely must have one of them, I would go with the goggles. You can freely purchase Amulets of Con (with bonuses better than the belt), you can also freely purchase Cloaks/Vests of Resistance (with bonuses better than the belt again) You would be able to keep your Belt of Str. Also, if you've been maxing out Search and Disable Device the +2 bonus on Search checks to find stone traps shouldn't be a necessity. Being able to speak and understand Dwarven is pretty useless IME. In your region that may be completely different though. If I were you, I'd just save my gold for another day. |

AW. every divine wisdom based caster would kill for it :P unless of course those with a racial problem with dwarves ;) just have a look what other things are there that all are "neck slot" items: amulet of mighty fists (monks would love to have both) amulet of natural armor (see amulet of mighty fists) amulet of proof against detection (some characters need it ;)) brooch of shielding (nice but not to demanding) hand of glory (i havent yet run out of ring slots ;)) hand of the mage (paint it black and tell everyone it's a dark elven hand ;)) necklace of adaption (can be very handy) periapt of health (nice to have) periapt of proof against poison (nice to have) periapt of wisdom (see above) scarab of protection (expensive but helps a lot) scarab of golembane (archers "must have", at least to switch to :)) so there are some items that one could consider for replacing an peeriapt of health, especcially when high strength is not as demanded as some nice abilities and an open neck slot. ciao martin m. |
| Paul H03-13-07, 12:11 PM | Hi Except that it takes up the BELT slot, (not neck), and the Save bonus is Racial, NOT Resistance, so they stack. But as to cost effective - depends on what you need. The Stonecunning is good, as is the save bonus vs spells/spell effects. And saves vs Poison for a Rogue?! ;) Darkvision 60' is also good since you don't need a light source anymore. (Which would normally give your rogue's position away - never good). Plus, the con bonus at least gives few extra HP & +1 Fort saves. Have a look at what else you have access to, then see which is more important. (Though the Dwarven Belt looks good - but heck, I play a Dwarf)! Cheers Paul H |
| solbergb03-13-07, 01:18 PM | Clerics and others (some monk, paladin, druid or ranger builds) that want neck slot for something other than amulet of health like the belt, especially if they're capable of crafting it. Ioun stones are cheaper, but don't also give darkvision etc. I could see a rogue type being interested for the save bonuses, trapfinding bonuses and darkvision. Most others find it overpriced. |

The automatic search check with stonework could be handy, as can be the darkvision, but it really depends on if you already have your neck slot tied up with something other than an amulet of health. My druid got lucky and got access to a belt of endurance from the arms&equipment guide. The drawback of the belt of dwarvenkind is so many of it's effects are duplicated by other items in other slots, and the -2 to charisma checks with anyone other than dwarves gnomes and halflings... |
| Gallaway03-13-07, 06:33 PM | What might make it more tempting is if you pick up AR access to the strength bracers that are kicking about. |
| Jay_Ibero_91103-13-07, 06:44 PM | What might make it more tempting is if you pick up AR access to the strength bracers that are kicking about. If you are talking about Armbands of Might, they don't give an enhancement bonus to strength, they give a bonus to strength based skills and checks and +2 damage when you power attack for at least 2. |

No these ones give a +2 strength bonus for 6000 gc and +4 for 18000 gc. Can't recall the name of them offhand because I didnt actually buy them, the character with access doesn't use strength for anything .. but I definitely have AR access to them. |
| jstorrie03-13-07, 09:09 PM | Bracers of Draconic Might? |
| Eric Anondson03-13-07, 09:18 PM | Save up for that belt of magnificence. Mmmm, +4 Str +4 Dex +4 Con +4 Int +4 Wis +4 Cha. That fits quite nicely on a belt slot. |
| Lomiat03-14-07, 12:51 AM | My primary character, a wizard, has placed the Belt of Dwarvenkind quite high on his goody list. This is because his amulet slot is already occupied and because he greatly desires the additional benefits the belt grants: Darkvision = We don't give away our position while scouting in dark tunnels. +2 to saves vs. magic = What else is possibly going to hurt my wizard? He flies above combats, and when the combats start flying toward him, he has other options to get away. When the spells fly at him, though, his defences are a bit shakier. +2 to saves vs. poison/disease = As above. These tend to be Fort saves, and wizards tend to have low Fort saves. He'll craft his own Cloak of Resistance +5, but there's very little else that can stack. The belt's modifier is one such benefit. (Perhaps the shrewd residents of the boards, here, may point out that the +2 the belt grants these specific Fort saves is the same +2 you miss on all Fort saves by not having the additional +4 CON from an Amulet of Health +6, but the Amulet of Health +6 is also more than double the cost of the belt.) Mostly, I want it for the saves against magic. At the higher APLs, I find that my wizard worries about very little apart from spells that might be directed at him or catch him in their areas of effect. Anything he can get to better his chances is gravy. |

(I mean other than the fact that you probably saved my character 14,900 gp, excluding the possibility that I would have reread the text before buying the belt -- which I'd put at 30%.) Darn you, Jay. Darn you and your RAW! ****Crawls back into his little imaginary utopia. It's better there...**** |

| awroe03-14-07, 10:21 AM | Doesn't that cost around 200,000 gp? That's the +6 one, the +4 one is _only_ 100k. Just have to die and be raised a few times at the right points to get enough money... |
| Eric Anondson03-14-07, 12:45 PM | Yeah, not cheap. But with a Dyver's bull market discount, a bit more affordable (no I didn't find access in Dyver's, but I did buy it on a Dyver's bull market -10% discount). I sold off a lot of stuff to get it though. I in no way expected to ever see one, but then there it was for item access on the AR. It ends up being cheaper than an equivalent bonus amulet, belt, cloak, gloves, headband, and periapt all together. Plus its a way to get those bothersome Con and Wis bonuses without sacrficing one or the other because this is one slotted item, not six. My character who picked it up is a holy liberator who is modestly dependent on Str, Dex (for AC), Con, Wis (bonus spells), and Cha (divine grace and smite evil). Even still, the belt of magnificence +2 is 25,000, still be hard to find I'm sure, but for something that gives stat bonuses to all six abilities in a single item more cheaply than all six items separately and in a single item slot rather than six item slots. Sorry about the bragging! Just wanted to give people hope that it exists.:D |
| bitznarf03-14-07, 01:00 PM | But access is rare. And rightly so, these are hardly common belts, lol. |
| kjenks03-15-07, 01:45 PM | My deep halfling druid will probably buy one. He doesn't need his belt slot for Strength and he definitely needs his neck slot for Wisdom instead of Constitution, so using the belt slot for Con makes a lot of sense. But because he's a deep halfling, he already has most of the other abilities (darkvision, speaking dwarvish, etc.). |

| Japangirl03-15-07, 04:19 PM | My halfling rogue with an Amulet of Fortune Prevailing (1/day reroll any save) would happily take a Belt of Dwarvenkind, as the darkvision and Con would both come in handy. |
