| GreatSiron07-01-06, 09:26 PM | I have access to several weapon enhancements, but only enough for one. I'm trying to figure out which of these would help a rogue the most: Bane(Evil Outsider) Bane(Undead) Frost I also have access to Holy, but I'd need to get another 10000 gp at least to afford it. Will one of the do the job, or should I wait to get Holy? |
| Lomiat07-01-06, 09:47 PM | Good question. I assume we're not addressing other potential enhancements because you don't have access. That said, Frost will work more often, but I would rate it last (depending on your region). However, it all depends on what type of weapon you currently have and where you play. I've played more IUZ mods than anything else of late, so both Bane (undead) and Bane (evil outsider) look quite nice. But if you don't see either of those often, Frost becomes more valuable. Of the two Bane enhancements, you have to make the decision: do you want to be better at what you can already do (such as sneak attack outsiders) or do you want to compensate for your weaknesses (such as the lack of sneak attack against undead)? I would generally try to compensate for my character's weakness. That, and I'd want the Bane (evil outsider) to be put on a Good-aligned cold iron or silver weapon so that it would sting more once it bypassed any DR. Nonetheless, I'd say, above all else, hold out for the Holy enhancement. Most monsters are Evil (certainly all Undead and Evil Outsiders qualify), and it helps you get past some pretty mean DR. It'll take a little longer to get it, but once you do, the benefits will add up quite quickly. |
| Swiftbrook07-02-06, 11:00 AM | Nonetheless, I'd say, above all else, hold out for the Holy enhancement. Best advice I can give is to say wait for Holy. Many evil outsiders have DR 10 vs Cold, Fire, Electrical so the extra 1d6 for frost is lost. -Swiftbrook |
| Genghis Cohen07-02-06, 11:05 AM | I'd wait for Holy. While you're saving up money, if you come across access to Magebane, jump on it. |
| Paul H07-02-06, 08:56 PM | Hi I agree with going for Holy. What character class is this? Just asking because there's a few 'bonuses' from some PrC's. (Storm Lord of Velnius is just one with several 'bonuses'). I've also got access to 'Good' from one AR. Cheers Paul H |
| GreatSiron07-02-06, 11:40 PM | He's a rogue/ranger going into thief acrobat. His biggest bonus from that will be to his AC and the fact he can tumble at full speed with no penatly. The weapon enhancement was to make up for the sneak attack dice he is going to lose. |
| GenghisBob07-03-06, 12:26 AM | there are some who claim rogues should never ever have holy weapons... But i blow my nose at them. Go the Holy! |
| Haro07-04-06, 12:57 AM | there are some who claim rogues should never ever have holy weapons... But i blow my nose at them. Go the Holy! ...I know were referring to me when making that statement. I thumb my nose at you and all you cheesy holier-than-thou types! ;-) In all seriousness though, I strongly believe that due to the heroic theme of the LG campaign the Holy enhancement is broken. Apart from the rp issues I have with chaotic neutral barbarians running around with holy weapons, I've always thought a holy weapon should be the sole domain of good-aligned clerics and paladins.* Too many times I've seen (for example) a high level archer put 5 holy arrows/round into the BBEG and just make a combat boring for everyone else. Short of a core plot arc where slaads take over the Flanaess, encounters will almost always involve fighting evil creatures so it's easy to see that for a +2 enhancement it is way overpowered. At the very least it should've been errated to; useable by good only (Not any non-evil). Anyway, back on topic - if you choose to sell your rogue's soul to Heironiuos then holy is the best option. Personally (and I play a lot of IUZ mods too) I have a silver undead bane weapon as a secondary weapon from my main adamantine based one. Of course, that's nowhere near as efficient as having holy. *My opinion kids, and I'm entitled to it. Feel free to disagree! |
| GenghisBob07-04-06, 01:14 AM | Greetings Haro, I was not actually refering to you but another we know, who Claims all Rogues should not have access to Holy - regardless of their alignment, their back story or role. we both know just becuase a PC has Rog levels does not mean he is not Good aligned or heroic. for example the Paladin / Rogue or Devoted Inquistor. Or Skull Clan Hunters, or other PC builds that make use of Rogue class ranks. But good or not, cheesey or not, or No restiction on Alignment or not, anyone of NON Evil Alignment can use a Holy Enhancement safely -> SO use it if you want. Slaads - Be careful what you wish for. It is funny you say this, my Paladin has been saving up for Aximotic enahancement - which she has access to. Especailly as she is moving to the Cold North of Ratik - where most the people are Chatotic. Infact during the Core Special, the Hanging Glaicer, almost all the enemy were CN.... GB |
| GreatSiron07-04-06, 01:06 PM | Well, my character sorta does have RP problems with Holy. He's a devot Kelenanite. On the other hand, he's also a ranger with the favored enemy evil outsider. Not to mention he'd like to contribute more against undead, and getting Holy is the same cost as getting both of those banes. |
| JohnduBois07-04-06, 04:24 PM | Try to pick up Sacred somewhere. It seems like it might be more useful for your character's perspective. |
| Swiftbrook07-04-06, 10:18 PM | Try to pick up Sacred somewhere. It seems like it might be more useful for your character's perspective. I don't remember seeing this one. What's "Sacred" and what book is it in? ???? -Swiftbrook |
| Iswald07-04-06, 10:45 PM | I don't remember seeing this one. What's "Sacred" and what book is it in? Libris Mortis. I don't have the book, but did find info about sacred by searching the book on Amazon.com. +1 enhancement, +1d6 damage vs undead and +2d6 damage vs evil outsiders, treated as good-aligned for overcoming DR. Nothing odd about undead or outsiders targeting the wielder (you'd think they'd avoid the wielder since the weapon glows from positive energy). Pretty easy to meet the crafting requirements too. |
| Haro07-04-06, 10:49 PM | Libris Mortis; It's a +1 enhancement that gives a damage bonus to both evil outsiders and undead. Wielding a sacred weapon in combat is also likely to attract the ire of the aforementioned baddies, similar to a holy weapon. That being said, not every DM plays Devils/Demons/Intelligent Undead that way... Joe |
| JohnduBois07-04-06, 11:01 PM | I don't remember seeing this one. What's "Sacred" and what book is it in? ???? -Swiftbrook Libris Mortis. It's a +1 enchancement that gives you the following bonuses: -Good-aligned weapon -+1d6 damage to undeads -+2d6 damage to evil outsiders. I'd say that it's about the best enhancement you can find for a Furyondy character (sadly, my character that uses weapons doesn't have access). Given where you're located, you'll be able to find access in both year 5 and year 6 adventures, and it's available in both regionals and cores (although one access requires meta-org participation). |
| Swiftbrook07-05-06, 07:02 AM | Thanks All! I'll be looking over my ARs, saving up my GP and playing a few more regionals in the future I guess. I didn't wait for "Holy" myself, went for "Frost". The main drawback with "Holy" is the cost of the +2 enhancement. I got my Frost about 10 mods ago and it has been very helpful. There was one mod with an evil outsider where it didn't help at all. But, if I waited for Holy, I'd still be waiting for at least 6 more mods. That's a lot of waiting for my mid level ranger. -Swiftbrook |
