exotic weapons are fine for builds that have feats to spare . . . .

martial weapons are of no use for those without proficiency . . . . . with one exception - see below

some classes (or subclasses) come with special restriction/needs that limit the weapon choice even further.

one of the best basic weapon: DAGGER - piercing AND slashing, can be used by everyone and can be thrown

another prime choice for those who are proficient with it: MORNINGSTAR - bludgeoning AND piercing, good damage output, can be used 2-handed

for those who can afford the additional weight: LONGSPEAR - one can always support another character from 10-ft distance

for a druid: QUARTERSTAFF - can cast shillelagh and later spellstaff on it.

for a monk: QUARTERSTAFF - and a flask of oil of shillelagh, even better when enlarged

another one for a monk: SPIKED CHAIN - even when not proficient with it, just trip things with the bonus combat reflexes

for a druid: SICKLE - relative good damage and a light weapon, can be used in a grapple

for strength lacking types: LIGHT CROSSBOW - especially at lower levels often the only thing a wizard can contribute to a fight AFTER he has cast enlarge person ;)

for the martial types: depends on whether they want an exotic weapon - opening exotic weapon master as a prestige class - or just spend the feat on something fancy for a standard weapon or other stuff.

always keep in mind that the raw dice damage is - under normal circumstances - NOT the vast damage source at higher levels. strength bonus damage, power attack, weapon specialization, weapon mastery, magic boni on the weapon, bard song and other such stuff will (or should) be substantial higher after level 4 for frontliners/damage dealers.

for general frontliners: carry a longsword OR waraxe (dwarves), maybe as backup weapon in combination with a buckler. have a reach weapon, have a ranged weapon - at best a comp. longbow suitable for the strength, carry some daggers, and a morningstar comes handy from time to time as well. BRING ALONG A SAP!!!!

worst weapons to take: most from the table section MARTIAL WEAPONS, LIGHT. example: SHORTSWORD - light weapon, can't be used 2-handed, can't be used with power attack, piercing only. so if there isn't a special reason like for a SAP, or THROWING WEAPONS or ARMOR SPIKES, don't get those.

I'm going to put my vote in for the Longsword/Battleaxe/Warhammer trio, with the Longsword winning by an edge.

To start with, for the vast majority of the characters with half an interest in using the weapons, they cost nothing to use. If you've been through basic weapons training, go for it. To me, that puts them over Exotic weapons overall even though Exotic weapons can be more powerful in a raw sense.

When compared to the harder-hitting two-handed weapons available such as the Greataxe and Greatsword, they do less damage but are much more versatile. They can still be used two-handed without penalty...the two-handed Strength bonus multiplier and Power Attack multipliers aren't any different from a Longsword to a Greatsword in this aspect. However, while a Greatsword or Battlaxe suggests only a single combat style, one-handed weapons can be used with shields when needed for greater protection. Being able to modify your combat style to the task at hand is a big plus in my opinion.

When compared with higher critical weapons like the Scimitar or Rapier, they suffer less when facing enemies that are not subject to critical hits. Also, the 1d8 starting damage bonus scales much better when the size of the character is increased, with 1d8 weapons going to 2d6 while 1d6 weapons flounder around at 1d8--hardly gaining anything.

When compared to light weapons...well...they actually do damage. Light weapons have their place, and I'd never want to be caught without one, but it isn't hard to make a weapon look better than a dagger in most situations.

The Longsword/Battleaxe/Warhammer trio (and other similar weapons) are a middle of the road choice, but they have all the basic parameters that most melee characters are looking for, plus some parameters that those same characters probably aren't looking for. They'll rarely be optimal, but the optimal choice is usually not much better than they are.

I was thinking of Puss in Boots in Shrek.

And of course the best "whepon" would be ze rapier.... :)

I'll say a Great Scimitar, followed closely by the Elven Thinblade, Bastard Sword, and Dwarven Waraxe, in that order. All are Uncanny Blow-able favored weapons of some god or another, allowing Pious Templar and Exotic Weapon Master to work together. Also, they are surprisingly versatile.

Best "thrown" weapon = Harpoon. (Especially if you are mounted character)

What other thrown weapon can be "pulled back into your hand" as a move action... (at 1st level... non-magic)

Tie the tow line to the mounts harness...
... Throw your full allotment of harpoons half way through your double move...
... (if they stick).. Rip them out (double damage) or drag the target behind you(illiciting AO from allies as they pass by)

Put returning onto the weapon(s)...

One of my characters got access to some weapon with a funny name from Book of Exalted Deeds. It was advertised as the best exotic weapon in the multiverse by its owner, but actually what it really does is the most mechanical damage without a huge drawback. I'm going to give it a miss as it isn't a reach weapon, but it isn't bad - it's a 2d6 18-20 greatsword-like weapon if memory serves but it might also have a piercing mode (ie, like a longsword rather than a greatsword).

It is not however on anyone's favored list, so you can't cheese it with pious templar. You need the four levels of fighter for weapon spec/mastery.

No one...

Just as no one favors the Elven Thinblade either...Neither are currently valid choices for a Pious Templar's Weapon Focus.

Though with the thinblade you can use a deity that gives Longsword or Rapier instead. Doesn't let you into EWM as well, but gives a Weapon Spec that's useful

Incorrect.

His favored weapon is "Any martial sword".

The passage regarding other swords (including exotic examples such as the two-bladeded sword, khopesh and sapara, and the Elven lightblade and thinblade), are a code of conduct for divine casters.

If they do not use a sword of some kind, it's a violation of the code of conduct. However, the exotic weapons listed to not qualify as "martial swords" for the purposes of favored weapons, and thus for the purpose of a pious templar's weapon focus feat.

I recently started a Snow Elf swashbucler with an Elven Courtblade. It allows both Weapon Finesse and two-handed Power Attack with pretty good damage (1d10) and a decent threat range (18-20/x2). And since it's an elven weapon, my elvish swashbuckler could use it as a martial weapon with the Improved Weapon Familiarity feat.

All of these "whepons" are listed in my LG Open Item list:

My elven fighter/swash/ranger has a Bane (Human) courtblade and enjoys it to no end :)

In re the above mention of thinblades and longswords. Remember that any feat you have that applies to the longsword will apply to the thinblade.

Soooo, a Pious Templar of Corellon would be able to have Weapon Focus (Longsword) to qualify for Pious Templar and then use an Elven Thinblade utilizing any and all Longsword feats you may have acquired :)

Ian

p.s. Greatsword feats transfer to the Elven Courtblade also :)

Isn't a Great Scimitar a martial weapon if used two-handed (same as the bastard sword)?

A great scimitar is too large to use in one hand without special training (the appropriate Exotic Weapon Proficiency feat). You can use a great scimitar twohanded as a martial weapon. Great scimitars are most often the personal weapons of heroes ....

This isn't that close - Spiked Chain in a rout. It can threaten adjacent and reach squares - 20' total reach enlarged; you can trip and disarm with it; you can get the flurry ability from EWM and get an extra attack at only -2!! Total Spiked Cheese.

No it's an exotic 1H weapon that can be wielded proficiently 2-handed by those with martial weapon proficiency (just like a bastard sword). It doesn't stop being an exotic weapon just because you can use it 2handed without the EWP feat.

No, he's correct (as was already said).

"Any martial sword (m) indicates a short sword, longsword, greatsword, falchion, scimitar, and rapier. It also indicates any other weapon that is both defined as a sword and as a martial weapon; thus a bastard sword wielded two-handed meets this definition" (LG Deities Doc. 2.0, p. 2)

I agree with all this plus you can power attack and weapon finesse it. Not to mention that it is really good to disarm with. It's only real down sides are it's crits and need for EWP (which is offset by EWFlurry).

Oh joy:
Sword, Bastard: A bastard sword is too large to use in one hand without special training; thus, it is an exotic weapon. A character can use a bastard sword two-handed as a martial weapon.

Clearly a bastard sword is an exotic weapon (confirmed by its place in the table).
"can use ... as" does not change that at all.

...so the Deity document needs rewriting because a bastard sword very definitely is not "defined as a martial weapon".

The Deities Doc author intent is clear however so 1h exotic weapons that can be wielded two-handed as a martial weapon will satisfy the condition for Kelanen but that definition should not be extended beyond this reference and people should understand that the text is misleading (just as the references to 'incorporeal miss chance').

In particular, you can use these weapons for an Exotic Weapon Master's Uncanny Blow trick. (that's the instance that springs to mind where it would matter)

Once again, no.

The phrase "meets this definition" is specifically in reference to the definition as it relates to a deity's favored weapons. That's the specific context of the paragraph, and the explicit reference the language is making in the passage.

It also happens to be the specific and limited point under discussion here...

There is no suggestion in either the language of the passage, nor in the discussion here that it is a martial weapon in any other case, so take a deep breath...No need to worry about the clouds damaging your roof as they fall from the shattered sky. ;)

Elven Court blade for the win. Dex and strength damage from a wood elf CoC is fanastic and the lets you have alittle higher AC for a two-hander.

You quoted a passage form the DDoc that contains a falsehood. "thus a bastard sword meets this definition*" is simply not true.
