I'm playing a generalist Wizard in Keoland, and am closing in on third level. I'm trying to figure out what would be the best feat to choose for him. Currently, I have Improved Initiative and that's it.

I'm thinking about Eschew Materials (since there is no slot bump on it, I could practically throw away my spell pouch) but am not sure if there's any benefit to it (LG doesn't seem like the kind of world where I'd end up in jail with my pouch and spellbook taken from me). The only thing I can think up for its usefulness is that it starts me off on the future capability to "will" spells later on (I plan to get Still and Silent in the future).

However, I'm not sure I can justify it with that being its only usefulness. What's are the most useful feats for Wiz-types in LG?

Thanks,

My first recommendation for a third level feat would be Craft Wondrous (item). There are a lot of things which make life easier as a wizard which you'll be able to make.

The only class I really like for Eschew Materials is druid, if you want to increase the number of spells you can cast while in a wild shaped form.

In LG I would not recommend Craft Wonderous Item at 3rd. There is almost nothing you can make at that level and you won't have the cash to make the few things you can. Wait and get it later.

What to get really depends on the flavor of your character. Do a lot of ranged combat and ray spells? Get Point blank and maybe later Precise shot.

Skill focus: Concentration is great if you need a boost in that skill and it is more useful than combat casting.

I don't see that Eschew materials is worth anything from the playing I've done.

Just find something that fits your character concept and is useful now.

Just to back up what Ed said, the words Craft Wondrous and Item should appear upon your char sheet as soon as hitting Wiz 3. It is a must for Wizards IMO.

Empower spell is good if you like blowing stuff up and Spell penetration is useful at higher levels when they start wheeling the demons into the scenarios.

as someone said it depends on what you want to do as a caster... plus you need to start thinking about feats for the P class you may want to join... but for any Meta Magic feat ie Craft or Empowered spell... I would wait till 5th level wizzard bonus feat to take... leave your 3rd level feat to something you dont get accesses through your class... I know this may not help much... but you need to deside now if you want to join a P class... and if so look at the reqierments of it...

Craft Wonderous is really good, but if this is your primary character and you play a lot then you are unlikely to have enought time units to spare to do much crafting. Augument Summoning is very nice if you like summoning spells, and the prerequisite spell focus:conjuration is useful for a bunch of nice battlefield control spells.

A few suggestions:

Craft Wondrous Item (it will be useful so if you dont' know what you want PrC-wise you will definitely not be wasting a slot. Leaves your lvl 5 free for Craft Wand if you want it.

Since you didn't take Point Blank Shot at lvl 1 I wouldn't bother

Improved Familiar. I think this is Core but I'm not certain -certainly worth considering.

Any nice Metamagic Feat -you don't get that many feats so consider taking one now even if it isn't going to help you for a while.

Transdimentional Spell has been recoomended to me in strong terms.

Don't take Eschew.

craft wondrous item.

Pearls of power are a still at 500 gp per pearl and can be crafted at 5th I believe. (about every caster I know of in my area...there are about 70 people that play LG in my area btw...all have pearls of power)

that besides-

spell penetration is never bad, neither is extend spell or empower.

if you are looking into going into a PrC...now is the time.

According to the DM's guide a pearl of power requires CL17 to create so it's pretty useless. I disagree with the need for this ridiculous caster level requirement but things are pretty strict in LG.

It is indeed pretty strict but Pearls of Power don't require CL17. They are a special exception. I can't remember the levels they need but I think they are in the LGCS. (possible the FAQ section)
