| CrystalBlue01-31-07, 01:14 PM | And he is, too. I got to play this last night...and I was just like, "Oh, boy!" Anyone that's not played this mod...needs to now. Anyone that has played it...should post here and give props to Britt, cause he's awesome. He is! O.O It was the best mod I've ever played in all of LG. So here's my thanks, Britt, for coming up with a damn-fine mod. *gives a present of cookies* |
| Reylance01-31-07, 01:48 PM | I like role-playing modules. But I don't like role-playing modules that stretch credibility. If, upon entering a tavern, you were automatically affected by a lesser confusion spell one out of every four rounds, exactly why would you stick around? The right decision, role-playing-wise, is to leave the tavern. |

See, Britt, I don't disagree with you 24/7 after all! :P |

If, upon entering a tavern, you were automatically affected by a lesser confusion spell one out of every four rounds, exactly why would you stick around? The right decision, role-playing-wise, is to leave the tavern. *Spoiler Alert* Did you try to leave the house? Because it certainly didn't let us when we tried. If you got stuck with a lesser confusion spell 1/4 rounds but the tavern kept not letting you leave, I bet you would go and continue exploring. *Spoilers Over* It was lots of fun, I've posted about Madhouse's awesomeness before but I will gladly do it again. EDIT: How do i get the background to show up black? I just whited out the text, but I'd like to do the nifty CIA blackout thing. |
| rockondon01-31-07, 03:05 PM | I had enormous respect for Britt before I learned he wrote Madhouse. It seems by far the most talked about and liked module on these forums. Which begs the question, where is madhouse? I'm lookin on the adventure lists and can't find it anywhere. Where can it be played? |
| Howie2301-31-07, 03:07 PM | [QUOTE=Japangirl;11345584 EDIT: How do i get the background to show up black? I just whited out the text, but I'd like to do the nifty CIA blackout thing.[/QUOTE] Please don't, and then clear the msg. This is a no-spoiler zone. :) David |
| Britt01-31-07, 03:24 PM | Thanks all :) It's IUZ6-05, so you can play it in any IUZ region. I also have 3 slots open at my table of it in the Fiesta at DDXP, though you have to have already purchased tickets for the Fiesta slot. And bob, you've agreed with me on something else before, I'm sure of it. It's just not often ;) |
| Britt01-31-07, 03:36 PM | Oh, and be sure to thank your DM. This mod needs a good DM to come off well. |
| Kelvane01-31-07, 03:44 PM | What APLs? can't find highfolk or Iuz blurbs anywhere, and e-mails are not being returned Tulach style. |
| Britt01-31-07, 04:00 PM | APLs 4-12. The email wasn't returned because I was trying to find the information but haven't been able to :) |
| Kelvane01-31-07, 04:15 PM | Just got your e-mail, thanks. Sorry but it a sore subject for our group. Tulach ignored our weekly e-mails for highfolk passwords for three months when he was Highfolk P.O.C., and when held your position it was the same treatment. We finally contacted Greg Marks and have had no problems with mods since. Again thanks for your help. |
| Britt01-31-07, 04:20 PM | No worries, I should have responded sooner. Just couldn't get the answers and was trying :/ |
| clannagh01-31-07, 05:31 PM | yay for Britt and madhouse, one of the funnest (is there such a word?) mod's ever. even the power building "its boring when do we get to combat" people in our group really liked it :) |
| RedKnightofKet01-31-07, 06:17 PM | Madhouse was an absolute blast! One of the more interesting roleplaying experiences I've had... |
| pimeister01-31-07, 06:25 PM | Oh, and be sure to thank your DM. This mod needs a good DM to come off well. I concur. People, make sure you find a DM who likes madhouse and is not going to be running it cold. It could be a terrible mod run cold by someone who doesn't particularly like the premise. |
| copper_wyrmling01-31-07, 08:27 PM | I concur. People, make sure you find a DM who likes madhouse and is not going to be running it cold. It could be a terrible mod run cold by someone who doesn't particularly like the premise. *dances* I'm signed up for Britt's table at DDXP! :cloud9: I can't wait! And also, lesser confusion you say? My Wild Mage smiles as she observes the ensuing chaos and mutters affectionately, "Amateurs". (Chaotic Mind makes you immune to confusion and insanity, presumably because for anybody with six levels of wild mage they're redundant ;) ) |

(Chaotic Mind makes you immune to confusion and insanity, presumably because for anybody with six levels of wild mage they're redundant ;) ) maaayyybeee ... but maybe not its pointless to try and predict anything about what effect your characters traits will have in play in madhouse thats partly what makes it such outrageous fun |
| Britt01-31-07, 08:42 PM | Don't worry, 6 levels of wild mage doesn't make the player immune to insanity :) |
| rockondon01-31-07, 08:57 PM | plus there's the thing about how mods can overrule certain things from happening or not happening. My elf characters have fallen asleep in a couple mods so far. |
| copper_wyrmling01-31-07, 09:13 PM | Don't worry, 6 levels of wild mage doesn't make the player immune to insanity :) Surely it would make me vulnerable? I mean, obviously I must be at least on the edge already ;) And to Rockondon and Clannagh: oh, it's entirely possible that Azrien will be (more) confused in Madhouse, whether by magic or simply by circumstances - and that's fine :) This is the girl who back at L2 relinquished all her saves against a wild magic field because she wanted to see what would happen - she wants to play with the fascinating house! *Azrien bounces in anticipation* :bounce: |
| clannagh01-31-07, 10:21 PM | Surely it would make me vulnerable? | copper_wyrmling02-01-07, 12:30 AM | well the house doesnt always seem to play fair :) but yes ... she is in for an interesting time Interesting is good! :) Azrien doesn't really get the concept of "fairness" - the idea that the world should work in the same way for everyone, or even operate by unchanging rules, is entirely alien to her mindset ;) She believes that the entire universe is imbued with a capricious, chaotic and powerful semi-intelligent force (which she tends to simply call Magic), and that this force LIKES her. I mean, everybody likes her (people, animals, magic items): it's obviously a reflection of some universal principle (well, obvious to a sorcerer with Wisdom 8) ;) Some day, I know, her certainty that the universe is on her side (and the resulting lack of anything resembling normal adventurer paranoia) is going to get her killed. I am still quite shocked that in eleven levels of being an unarmored mage with Con 12, the worst this attitude has gotten her is an unplanned pregnancy (and that was more a matter of a certain dragon liking her too much... and Azrien having a truly abysmal Sense Motive score: "Oooh, a moonlit flight over the canyon? That sounds like so much fun!") She's played with three evil artifacts and the only lasting effects have been an affinity for necromancy, the unlocking of her silver dragon heritage, the ability to see in darkness and poor light (with an accompanying tendency to squint in bright light) and an inherent bonus to Charisma. But yes... I am very much looking forward to seeing how she interacts with the Madhouse  |
| _metz_02-01-07, 01:57 AM | I played this at SRDU, and I thought it was fantastic, Depends on the players and the DMs (If they all only love combat it will fall down) but get a party thats into roleplaying, and it'll be fantastic. One of the best mods I have ever done also Britt, congratulations. (just spent whole day discussing it online with a fe DMs there lol so its come up on these forums too hehehe you have quite the following) |
| pedr02-01-07, 04:31 AM | Is anyone from IUZ metaregion coming to GenCon UK? I'd love to play this module (seems like everyone's raving about it!) and the chances of me being in the US anytime this year are pretty slim! Aug 28-31 2007, Reading University. www.consupport.com :) please? |
| Puggle Halfwine02-01-07, 09:11 AM | All I have to say is: Vote #1 Britt Frey for world emperor. Also, NEVER WRITE A SEQUEL. The mod is perfect as it is. It cannot be improved upon any further and there will be no sequels. I command it to be so. |
| Britt02-01-07, 12:45 PM | I accept your vote for world emperor. Don't worry, I would never write a sequel. Part of the reason this works is that it's different. If you played something like this more than once every year or two, it wouldn't be fun, IMO. Each time I write something, I try to find an interesting angle to use. If I can't find something interesting and different, I have a hard time writing (in school, too). I'm still trying to figure out what to do in my next project, in which I have a few more constraints :/ |
| CrystalBlue02-01-07, 01:10 PM | Well...first you'll need to build a large wooden badger... |
| JJeff02-01-07, 07:30 PM | Is anyone from IUZ metaregion coming to GenCon UK? Aug 28-31 2007, Reading University. www.consupport.com :) please? You COULD come to South East Asia, since almost all of South East Asia is in Perrenland or Ratik... |
| clannagh02-01-07, 07:55 PM | Well...first you'll need to build a large wooden badger... ah yes .. the devious wooden badger ploy from influx ... the large wooden badger is actually in mind for a proposed 07 Ratik mod .. probably intro if its used it will be an upfront part of the plotline so thats not a spoiler |
| garyjohnson02-01-07, 08:23 PM | I concur. People, make sure you find a DM who likes madhouse and is not going to be running it cold. It could be a terrible mod run cold by someone who doesn't particularly like the premise. That was my experience of the scenario - we had an out-of-town DM running "cold" who didn't know about the PCs from playing with them, didn't work in much if any of the information we did provide, and didn't seem very interested in the interaction/characterisation parts of the scenario. It didn't help my mood that he kept on calling my character "the cohort" because I was 8th level and playing up to APL 12 (my 12th level primary ran out of TUs a few weeks earlier). All in all, Madhouse was one of my least fun play experiences in 2006 - which I find interesting, given I think I'm one of the "talkative role-players" who form part of the demographic of players most likely to enjoy the scenario as written. If nothing else, I guess it's a useful insight into how much more influence the DM has on the play experience than the author. Cheers, Gary Johnson |
| _m_02-01-07, 08:41 PM | ah yes .. the devious wooden badger ploy from influx ... the large wooden badger is actually in mind for a proposed 07 Ratik mod .. probably intro if its used it will be an upfront part of the plotline so thats not a spoiler and it will be green and orange. its important! |
| Britt02-01-07, 08:45 PM | That should have NEVER happened. Taken directly from the Preparation for Play section: "Do NOT run this adventure “cold.” This adventure eschews readaloud text and scripting; this necessitates a good deal of familiarity with the talking points of Encounter 1, the options available to the GM in Encounter 3, and the...<spoiler stuff.>"..."This adventure is focused around intra-party roleplaying and requires a good deal of flexibility on the part of the GM." This adventure cannot be run well cold. Having run it several times now, I still get a headache by the end of the mod, everytime. Keeping up with the players and keeping everyone involved takes more time than a DM really has; they definitely don't have time to figure things out as they go. |
| LGMoses02-01-07, 09:00 PM | Britt is the ****! Britt is the ****! Britt is the ****! :cheer: |
| clannagh02-01-07, 09:02 PM | and it will be green and orange. its important! yah yah it can be green and orange *pat's Alvin* |
| copper_wyrmling02-01-07, 09:06 PM | yah yah it can be green and orange *pat's Alvin* Not purple and green and orange? *Azrien prestidigitates the giant wooden badger* Incidentally, Britt, is there any background information you would like on our characters before running Madhouse at DDXP? :bounce: |
| rockondon02-01-07, 09:19 PM | I think Britt should write a Madhouse sequel, but a COR module this time. Contrary to popular belief, the whole world doesnt live in the IUZ metaregion ;) |
| RedKnightofKet02-01-07, 09:32 PM | Not purple and green and orange? *Azrien prestidigitates the giant wooden badger* Incidentally, Britt, is there any background information you would like on our characters before running Madhouse at DDXP? :bounce: Hmmm.... Having just played Madhouse, I think that Britt could have a lot of fun with more background information.... |
| _m_02-01-07, 09:38 PM | Not purple and green and orange? *Azrien prestidigitates the giant wooden badger* Incidentally, Britt, is there any background information you would like on our characters before running Madhouse at DDXP? :bounce: You'll get a q/a sheet at the game. meanwhile, the badger MUST be green and orange. It was constructed by Alvin and Gem during the srdu interactive, and as such, to properly pay homage to it, it has to be green and orange, as gem painted it so. |
| Britt02-01-07, 09:58 PM | Incidentally, Britt, is there any background information you would like on our characters before running Madhouse at DDXP? I'll be sending all of you a Q&A sheet next week, when I'm not editing the LGCS 24/7 :) Yes, I definitely like to have character info ahead of time so I can plan how to make you all crazy. |
| clannagh02-01-07, 10:30 PM | You'll get a q/a sheet at the game. meanwhile, the badger MUST be green and orange. Britt, can us Judges that plan to run this for our local groups get a copy of your Q&A sheet so we can learn how to make people crazy too? |
| Britt02-01-07, 10:38 PM | Sure, send me an email. |
| copper_wyrmling02-02-07, 12:14 AM | I'll be sending all of you a Q&A sheet next week, when I'm not editing the LGCS 24/7 :) Yes, I definitely like to have character info ahead of time so I can plan how to make you all crazy. Azrien is already crazy, due in part to certain Iuz metaregion thingies, so it's already somewhat your fault Britt :) But you can make her even crazier, yes yes :cloud9: I look forward to filling in your Q&A sheet with all the information about my Chaotic Good  Trithereon-worshipping :fight!: red/copper/silver-dragonkin :dragon: unfortunately-Suloise-but-definitely-not-a-Scarlet-Brotherhood-agent :incog: Wee-Jas-hating undeath-tainted necromantic Wild Mage :mage: , who is also a Consort of Morginstaler  , a Dreamer sworn to the eternal watch on the Bright Lands  , and the co-owner of Perrenland's most successful casino chain... :pint: What? I like smilies ;) |
| _metz_02-02-07, 03:41 AM | ruddy gnome badger thingys, that cropped up online the other day, some people must have been talking about it from SRDU guys, was very surprised to see it lol |
| Golorious02-02-07, 12:21 PM | Madhouse is 60% dependent on the DM to PC interaction and 40% on PC to PC reaction. If people are just there for the AR then they will not have fun no matter how creative the DM is. Running just about any mod cold will lessen the experience. This one more than others because of the Plot or umm anti-plot. It is an experience that is hard to explain because each table can be VERY different. It is truly adventurous. Get a good creative DM and some Role Players and you will have a great time. I know that I did and almost everyone I have seen get run through also had a great time. My Favorite Quote "You had WHAT happen? Did we play the same Module?" |
| MatBlack02-02-07, 05:21 PM | CrystalBlue's group was a blast to run through the Madhouse. i don't think i'll ever look at scale mail armor the same again. it really is a boon if you already know a lot about the characters that you are running through the mod, though it's still relatively easy to make things fun for characters that you aren't familiar with. it also helps if you spend a large portion of your life watching "haunted house" style horror movies. |
| GorTeX02-02-07, 06:22 PM | Just chiming in to agree whole-heartedly that this is one the best mods I have played to date. And Britt not only wrote it, but runs it well :) |
| Necrochaos02-03-07, 09:01 AM | One of the best modules I have ever played! Our tabale did a great RP job and the paranoia was everywhere! Our DM (Frank Pont) made the story so rich that it drew us all in. I hope to see a sequel to this module or more modules along this line of thinking |
| Reska02-03-07, 09:39 AM | If I had known Britt was going to run it (and I wasn't already setup to play a Ket Sequel to last year's Open Fiesta) I would have jumped at the chance.... Hrm...maybe we can talk Britt into doing a Midnight madness of it? huh? huh? :plotting: --Reska |
| clannagh02-05-07, 11:22 PM | One of the best modules I have ever played! Our tabale did a great RP job and the paranoia was everywhere! I hope to see a sequel to this module or more modules along this line of thinking as Britt said a sequel would not work but madhouse is a mod that really should have been core |
| KPollnow02-08-07, 11:35 AM | Britt, my main regret is not getting to play this mod with Arenna, she would have wanted to live in that house forever! |
| Britt02-08-07, 12:26 PM | Hah! Totally! |
| Danacyrus02-09-07, 07:02 PM | I remember playing Madhouse at a really high APL, i think it was 12 and i was lvl 2. It was definitely a great game! Especially with the tainted notes getting passed around the table it was a really good game. And we had a great group of people and a great dm. It is definitely one of my favorites! :cheer: |
