i am a big fan of RP and have been playing PC RPGs since before i can remember. i have played 2 and 3rd ed d&d and i am somewhat interested in playing again. just out of curiousity to what wizard of the coast has been up to lately i decided to take a look at their website and was amazed at the amount of things they are up to. I live in austin and after reading about RPGA i am pretty interested. now the things i need explained entail, am i to late to get started, does everyones character in the campaings get wipped after a certain amount of time, do i have to be very devouted to have a good time (i am a college student and work 20 hours a week). also is there any money involved? sorry i am asking so many questions, it just seems that the website has only given me a very vague discription of what exactly this is

sorry to pester

I've played with people who have played LG from year one. As far as I know there hasn't been a player wipe. That being said though, there is a retirement of very high level characters, currently 18, and changing to 16 next year.

About all you need is a Player's Handbook. If your playing with friends, and non-convention, generally your not going to pay. However, some places do require $1 or so per session. Basically it depends on where you pay, and what costs are needed to be covered.

You can always look up your local region's website for information on what groups are avialable for joining.

That will help you out.

Assuming you're talking about Austin, Texas, you're in the Bandit Kingdoms region for Living Greyhawk. The BK website is at: http://www.bandit-kingdoms.net/

IIRC, Austin's got a pretty active RPGA community, esp. for Living Greyhawk. You should be able to find LG events through that website.

You start your character at first level as described in the Living Greyhawk Campaign Sourcebook (LGCS), available for download at the WOTC site and most regional sites such as the Bandit Kingdom's.

Most players have more than one character, and they vary from level 1 up to 18 (ready for retirement). Start a new character any time and play him or her whenever you can. You cannot play the same module twice even with two different characters. Many of us have one or more character for each of several regions and try to play those characters only in the character's home region. Many of us also have different class characters, so if one party needs a cleric, you play your cleric, or if a rogue is needed, play your rogue, and so on.

Games can be played at various APLs (Average Party Level), broken down in even numbers (e.g. APL 2, 4, 6, etc). Try to have a character within 2 levels of the APL of the group you wish to play with. This may force you to play one class because your other characters are too high in level or too low in level to match the rest of the party. This is why long time LG players often have separate characters at levels like 15, 11, 9, 7, 6, 4, 2, and 1. This way they have one or more characters able to play at APL 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, and 16.
