Hey guys,

Question regarding the feat Celestial Scion from Dragon Magazine 315. Specifically, the house of Torquaan.

From the feat:

Torquaan: ... allows you a 10% discount on all purchases made anywhere the influence of House Torquaan is known.

Does this 10% discount count on items created via crafting? Note that the golden rule, "You Cannot Sell Something For More Than You Paid For It" still applies, so items created in this fashion cannot be sold for half of base price netting you a tidy 10% profit. No matter how cool it might be.

What about scribing spells into one's spellbook? What about upkeep? What about your starting equipment, if you're in an area where the family isn't known, but your character background is that you're from somewhere that is (I'm a Perrenlander at the moment, but come SRDU, I go to Ratik so I was basing my character there...)?

Cheers,

Puggle.

After re-reading the feat, I would say it could only apply to items you actually purchase in the regions where it is a local feat, namely Ahlissa (Adri/Innspa) and Ahlissa (Naerie). Most "10% discount" benefits I've seen (MOs, AR favors, etc.) generally are regional benefits, and some are even more limited, in that the 10% only applies to equipment purchased from the PHB.

But I'm not campaign staff, so the above is just IMO. ;) Maybe TimRat or one of the other Circle members will see this and comment -- it's a rather vaguely worded feat, I'll admit, and more-suited to a DM's ruling in a home campaign...

After reading the feat description I must say that I agree it is a bit unclear. On the onehand it states House Torquaan's financial reputation reaches across all former parts of the Great Kingdom (which would include regions such as Nyrond and Greyhawk City), and at the same time it mentions it does not work in areas actively hostile towards the House. For now the feat only functions in the regions that give access to the feat: Ahlissa, the Northern Kingdom and the Solonor Compact. So it can only be used in the regionals of Ahlissa (Naeri) and Ahlissa (Adri), as well as meta-regionals set in Ahlissa and Cores set in these regions as well as the Northern Kingdom and the Solonor Compact. I will talk with my fellow Circle members to see if they hold a different opinion.

For now the feat also applies only to normal purchases and not to item creation or scribing spells. Which might also change after a discussion with my fellow Circle members.

It's also interesting to note that this feat is core for the Ratik area. Would Ratik therefore be added to the list of places where this feat works?

To be honest, that appears a bit strange. So far in LGCS the regional feats have been among those that actually appeared for regions in Dungeon Magazines. I looked at Ratik page but could not find regional feat list.

The following were mentioned in Dungeons 315/317:

Border Watch
Exercises of Arnd
Mountain Fighter
Vatun's Touch

Also, I am quite surprised by your suggestion that Celestial Scion is available in Ratik. I actually asked clarification for this feat in Triad list inspired by your question (and Pieter nicely commented on it here) and Ratik Triad member answered that feat is not available in Ratik and will not work in Ratik.

Does anyone know what the Ratik regional feats are/will be?

Oh. I have checked my source; apparently the feat is NOT available in Ratik. My mistake. I blame the long con going on at the moment and the short sleeping hours associated with said con.

Anyway, it will be interesting to see the circle rules on that feat.
