Does a deity's stature (Greater, Lesser, Hero, etc.) have any affect on the gameplay? Or on the abilities of Clerics, etc.?

Thanks.

You will probably have an easier time finding a temple or meta-org devoted to a greater deity, but this varies widely across the regions. You're more likely to get favors or friends from greater deities, but again this will vary with your region. Different categories of deities have a different number of domains available to worshippers.

But there is not a really compelling reason to let the deity category have a major influence on your character. Pick a concept that will be fun to play -- and a deity that matches the concept. Match those to the region where you usually play and the meta-orgs in that region and you'll have a grand time.

But if you pick an under-appreciated deity or one that is unpopular in your region, there will be some frustration that goes along with that decision.

OK, I'm new so bear with me. Assuming I had a rarely used deity, how would that affect me? Would I not be able to do certain things?

You won't find any meta-org support. Your PC may be ostracized or subject to arrest, if the deity is disliked or outlawed locally. The number of domains a deity offers is tied to his status as greater, intermediate, etc.

For example, I have a cleric of Mouqol, who I originally played in Dyvers. There was no malice towards him, but there was no support in meta-orgs, other than a generic Cleric's Circle. It you wanted to pay extra TUs and gp, you could build a font in the Cleric district. The more supporters you had the larger the church could be. It went font (1-10), church (11-50), temple (51-100), cathedral (101 and up); with cathedral being reserved for greater gods. That meant that a temple of a lesser god could have just as many worshipers as a cathedral, but wouldn't be able to have a higher clerics' circle than temple. Also, each circle had level restrictions and an increasing TU and gp cost to make it feasable. For each circle the god had there was increasing access to restricted spells, magical items and favors.

My character joined the generic Cleric's Circle, which gave access to +1 upgrades and other such things, plus 1-3 level restricted spells, but you had to pay 1gp per spell level per new spell and spend a TU to learn it. I never played him enough to get a font, but it would have granted access to +2 upgrades and 1-5 level restricted spells.

To make a long story short, I don't know what the state of the Geoff clerics' meta-org is, aside from the fact that no meta-org throughout LG is open for new membership until the new year 5 rules come out. You might want to ask other cleric players in Geoff about what the benefits are.

Even though I'm sure you're aware of this, the greater a god is, the better and more plentiful their domains are. For example, Pelor has a couple more domains than Kelanen.

OK, thanks for the replies! I think I understand it now.

My character is going to be a Halfling, and I see there is a generic Halfling meta-org, which looks good enough for my needs.

In general, the role-playing benefits of playing a lesser god that exactly fits your character concept will outweigh the role-playing benefits of meta-orgs + a god that "sorta kinda" fits your character...

And quite frankly, Pelorites are a dime a dozen...Followers of Atroa, now that's a bit more interesting...
