I'm wanting to play a cleric, but am unacquainted with the gods that are offered in LG. Are there any rules as to creating a new religion and god of your own in LG? If that is not allowed, what are some gods that I could read up on?

Nope, sorry, you need to work with the ones that are already there.

You should download the LG Deities document.

On this page:
http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=lg/welcome

...on the right side, you'll see a sidebard entitled "Living Greyhawk Information". Under campaign documents, download the "Living Greyhawk Deities v2.0".

Some of the deities don't have more than a very bare-bones description in there, and some of the ones in there aren't available for PCs to worship, but there's a table, starting on p.199 of that document, that does list all of the ones that PCs can worship.

Depending on what region you live in / you'll be playing in, you may want to consider which deities are commonly worshipped there. Being a cleric of certain deities in certain places can cause you problems.

While that's technically correct in terms of getting divine abilities, nothing stops you from worshipping some random "god".

At least one person in my region has done so. In fact, he's gained quite a following of worshippers already.

My now retired cleric of Johydee frequently pretended to be a cleric of another god (Pelor, in general) as a cover.
I fathom there are a few other gods (i.e. Zagyg) which wouldn't really care if you made up your own god (Banjo the clown comes to mind) as long as it is a joke or a cover. So long as you realize it is a farce and the true magic comes from another deity (and anyone witha decen Knowledge(religioN) will realize this), I think few DMs will object.
Note that some spells (such as spiritual weapon) may give you away - most people thought it peculiar that the cleric-of-Pelor summoned a short sword to fight her opponents...
Ofcourse you can also take bard, make up a god, and pretend you're a priest. But in that case be prepared of a lot of people seeing through your bluff - and not everyone will be amused (a.k.a. don't visit the Pale).

How so and how does that "Random god" work?

On page 2 of LG deities document it clearly says "PCs other than clerics/favored souls do not need to serve a specific deity and druids/paladins do not need to serve a patron deity but they may do so if desired. However, if PC decides to serve or worship a deity, they must choose one in this document and cannot choose Wastri or evil deity. (emphasis mine).

Well, it's a roleplay thing, and has no mechanical effect.

Basically you mistakenly worship a deity that does not exist in LG (or a non-deity that is mistaken for a deity). Consider someone mistakenly worshiping a deity that does not exist in any other context. Some people will find you odd, crazy, or even dangerous for such beliefs.

This of course won't work for clerics or favored souls (since they actually have to revere an existing deity), but Reska never mentioned the class of these "random" deity worshipper.

I suppose this form of "insanity" could be considered illegal just like evil alignments, but that's short-sightedness on the part of the LG deities document, in my grandiose opinion. The legalese around it is that they actually aren't worshipping a non-sanctioned/non-existent deity, they just think that they are.

Is there any merit to Raistlin from Dragonlance trying to become a god in LG? Is that a possibility or not? Anyone ever read anything on the matter?

That's a completely different campaign world...Dragonlance doesn't even exist, as far as Greyhawk is concerned. It's akin to saying, "I want to worship Thor in Greyhawk". Not only does that deity not exist in that setting, but there's no legitimate way your character would have ever even *heard* of Raistlin.

Before anyone else assumes my question to be ridiculous, I know that Dragonlance is non-existent to LG campaigns, but has anyone read/heard of a character becoming a god; I'm wondering if it's possible. I know there are those out there who're more acquainted with the LG-setting & rules than I am.

OK, two separate questions here, I think.

1) Have mortals in the Greyhawk setting become deities? Yes. Zagyg, Mayaheine, and Murlynd are three examples I can think of off the top of my head; I'm sure that there are others. So, in theory, it's possible within the "rules" of the setting.

2) Have Living Greyhawk PCs become deities? Not as far as I know. I'd be very, very, very surprised if it's something that would ever be offered within the campaign.

Still, if your PC wants to aspire to godhood, there's theoretical precedent...but you, as a player, better be ready for disappointment.

easy guide for at least "immortal hero" status (ok, your character has first to be dead to get it).

get one of your characters near to absolute retirement or play high APL specials.
get your character out of the campaing by dying heroically or at least remarkably or utterly ridicilous.

write a module where your character's death is referred to as being a "lighttower" of pholtianess or any other similar orthodox doctrinic reference (hm, in fact DON'T use a pholtian, there seem to be an obscure secret law against any pholtian cults, maybe someone fears that writers would loose this wonderful plot hook and everytime guaranted player fun of pholtian npc clerics).

include a "shrine" to your deceased character in any further module you write (three and above should do the trick).

create further divine casters with the same main patron deity and let them be "followers of the doctrine of you-name-him".

ok, to complicated????

just let declare one of your characters himself as the latest incarnation and final idolisation of zagyg.

"and from now on everyone who worships the mad archmage should pray to him in the name of you-name-him."

especcially funny when the character in question is a plain fighter, trying to cast a spell. as a dm i would give you a one-in-a-billion chance of getting it off.

I can't believe this kind of option isn't offered to PC's at epic levels, who want to gain that status. There should be a quest/campaign once a year, at a national convention, where a character could aspire in a sanctioned quest to become a god or immortal or something awesome like that. I would pay money just to witness the adventure! We'd need an amazing DM, though, and it would probably have to be a solo adventure (because who is going to want to walk with some 23rd level mage into the Abyss through a portal? I wouldn't last a second!). The quest should definitely challenge every aspect of the character, which might make it requisite to submit an application to WotC for character review & they'd create a unique adventure tailored to & for your PC to reach godhood. This could be a whole new layer of the Game!

Sure, not every character is going to want to risk or even have the desire to become a deity, but for clerics, paladins, evil mages & other misc. adventurers that are out there with something to prove, this would be the apex of their lives. Instead of retiring them, they should at least have the option to become what they've lived for their entire adventuring lives! Think of adventuring your whole life, then one day you decide you're done because you're a 25th level sorcerer, or what-have-you, and there's nothing left to do; you've been everywhere, done & have everything, and there is just not enough challenge in fighting another demon trying to take over the world. Finally, you could come out of retirement & meet your match. And this time, failure doesn't mean "Oh, the Tank can carry me back to be resurrected." This time, you fail, you are eternally damned or otherwise risking it all at the greatest adventure of all time; you play with fire, you get burned. You could have everything or you could loose it all.

How fulfilling would it be to have YOUR character published in the appendix to the LG deity guide or whatever it's called, instead of "retiring." I mean how disappointing was it to have Conan the Barbarian retire? Then think, you could play that character against other mortal-turned-god deities in order to become the most powerful diety or in battles of good versus evil. I'm seriously writing a letter to WotC. Who is with me? Really, who would love to see this as an option in LG?

dude there are plenty of ways to become imortal. its actually surprisingly easy.

green star adept comes to mind immidiately. heck, as far as i know, elves are basically imortal :D

meanwhile, you'd end up with alot of pretty stupid gods. i mean really, everyone gets a retired character sooner or later. so as not to be mean, if they alowed it, everyone would get to do it. you'd have thousands of random hero gods.

besides, you'd need to be 20+ to be a hero god, and lgh ends at 16, so you'd need years of rare high level campagin games. and realistically, lgh characters turned gods would be fairly unimpressive. you cant just... become a god.

as for alvin (my main), he'd make a TERRIBLE god. he'd blow up bits of perenland just for the fun of it.

Living Greyhawk characters don't get to epic levels! The character level cap is generally fifteen, and that's something that usually takes players three or four years to reach at the very least. So no, I can definitely believe that it isn't offered, since it isn't appropriate at all to the setting or power level of the campaign.

Incidentally, the two most common deities chosen among the people I play with are Pharlangn (sp?) and Kelanen, mainly for the domains they offer. Domain powers and spells are the shiznit for clerics.

11-13-06, 08:47 PM
Not to pile on...but if you (the original poster) are new to LG, you really need to learn more about the campaign before you start railing about what's not available.

The campaign doesn't extend to Epic levels...and that's why deityhood isn't even a remote possibility for PCs. When I made my earlier replies, I didn't realize that you didn't realize this, and that's why I didn't mention it there.

Sounds like the idea one of my friends had for a character. Guy who was absolutely convinced he was a god. The only reason he was stuck down here on Oerth and you didn't find his holy relics was the other gods got jealous and kicked him out.

Actually, he was a Favored Soul of Zagyg, who had decided he was too insanely cool - or is that just insane - not to keep.

I didn't know characters couldn't be granted epic level status in LG! My ignorance aside, what's so special about the dad-gum 15th level?
DuctShuiTengu

11-13-06, 09:52 PM
What's so special about 20th level? (Aside from WotC deciding you go into epic levels at that point)

What's so special about 1st level? (Aside from it being where you start)

What's so special about 6th level? (the earliest that you can take a level in most PrCs without some serious twisting of the rules)

They had to either allow people who'd been playing since year 1 to go into epic levels that they didn't want in the campaign, or draw the line somewhere. At present, that line is drawn at mandatory retirement as soon as you hit 16th level.
kenobi65

11-13-06, 10:01 PM
IMy ignorance aside, what's so special about the dad-gum 15th level?

Most of the RPGA's campaigns have (or had) some sort of mandatory character retirement before 20th level (or, the campaign reached its natural end before PCs could possibly reach that point). Writing appropriately-challenging adventures for high-level PCs is always a difficult task, and most of the campaign staffs have decided to avoid the issue by implementing a retirement level.

And, the campaign flavor of Greyhawk has always been a little grittier, a little less high-level and high-magic, than some of the other D&D campaign worlds. Granted, some of the "name" NPCs are 20th level or above...but relatively few. Take a look at the LG Gazetteer, and you'll see that a lot of the key NPCs in the campaign are well under 20th level.

That said, LG recently introduced a high-level campaign option...but, given the relatively few opportunities that appear to be available for high-level play, those retired LG PCs won't be making 20th level anytime soon, anyway.
StevenJones

11-13-06, 10:16 PM
OK, so now I've learned that LG makes you retire your character at 16th level? Are there any exceptions? Man, I was so pumped when I heard about the RPGA, but I can't become a god, I can't get past 16th level - what does a character do when they "retire?" Retire...hmm...it sounds so...outta shape...so...old.

Without someone being smart, is there anyway to fulfill my idea of creating a cleric (or other adventurer) that worshiped a god that offered a promise to become like them or am I dreaming?
_m_

11-13-06, 10:28 PM
the super powers in lgh are usually sitting around 15. like paladin lady for example. incidentally, if you want your character in late play, (ie. written in as an npc), you can submit it to some of the writters to get it written into mods.

and imortality really is fairly easy to get.
kenobi65

11-13-06, 10:37 PM
OK, so now I've learned that LG makes you retire your character at 16th level? Are there any exceptions?

You're retired from the main campaign at 16th level, and no, there aren't exceptions, save for the fact that you would still be eligible for the high-level campaign (which is, technically, a separate campaign).

Man, I was so pumped when I heard about the RPGA, but I can't become a god, I can't get past 16th level - what does a character do when they "retire?" Retire...hmm...it sounds so...outta shape...so...old.

You become a leader of men, or whatever. As _m_ noted, there are a fair number of NPCs in the campaign who are retired PCs, so that's always an option...if your PC really does make it up to that level, you *are* a mover-and-shaker in your region, and it could be appropriate for your PC to continue to influence the campaign in that way (though it'd be out of your direct control).

And, you need to play your butt off to get to that point, just FYI. Advancement in LG is not as fast as it may be in your home game...I know that I just played my primary character in his 22nd module, and he just made 6th level. I'd be curious to hear from players who've retired characters, and see how many modules they'd played...well over 100, I would have to imagine.

Without someone being smart, is there anyway to fulfill my idea of creating a cleric (or other adventurer) that worshiped a god that offered a promise to become like them or am I dreaming?

Well, as I noted earlier, there are examples in the Greyhawk mythos of mortals who ascended to godhood...in many cases, they were "sponsored" by an existing deity (e.g., Pelor sponsored Mayaheine, Heironeous sponsored Murlynd). Your character could certainly aspire to that, but I'm not aware of any Greyhawk deity who goes around and actively offers godhood to people.

I can tell you, my main LG character is level 12, and I'm on my 59th adventure record (CORS6-03, Yay!). I've been playing for almost 3 years now, and I just hit level 12 at GenCon. I have yet to lose a level, too. One of my friends (who has been playing longer than me) is level 13, has died twice, and has - I believe - about 100 ARs. From what I've been told, it takes a couple hundred adventures to retire, in general - although I have no firsthand evidence of this. Long story short, it takes a long time to retire in LG.

Hi

2 years (last week) - 37 AR's, and my character is 7th lvl. (Did die once).

Need to win the Greyhawk Lottery (or something) to pay for all the access items, but at least I've made a start. (Saving for Tan Bag of Tricks).

Back on subject - choosing a deity is strictly "horses for courses" rule.
My Oskar Thorinson (Cleric 3 Warmage 4) chose Boccob because it works well with the Magic idea, and it grants Magic & Trickery Domains.

Problem is do I take Invisibility for 2nd lvl Domain spell, for the invis. healing, or take ID Item, which has no expensive material component for clerics? ;)
(Just uses Holy Symbol for DF)

Well, you have to pick per day, so pick what seems most useful for that day. You get one domain slot per day, but you can memorize either domain spell in that slot.

You take invisibility because Identify requires an hour to cast - those times when it would be useful to know what an item is right away rarely give you an hour to cast the spell, and it's almost always useful for someone in the party to be invisible. If you've got an hour to cast identify, you can probably afford to wait until the next morning when you renew your spells anyway.

Sorry - that was one of those rhetoric questions that didn't need an answer, but thanks for all who did.

Normally take Invis because things often go to Hell in a scenario, and whilst we normally have time to ID items (often useful), staying alive because the Healer's invisible is rather more important.
(But would be different if I took Spontaneous Domain instead of Leadership. Still haven't been able to use my dakon cohort yet). :(

Hi

Erm - How did he get an extra +10 Str? Items, rage, whatever?

(Cohort starts with stats & 1st lvl Wiz as printed).

Cheers

easy.

he opens at 18, bumps at 4, +1 for green star adept, 4 from bulls strength, 4 from rage. i could up it again with +str items without much trouble, and even more with some bear warrior thrown in. then again still with +str rage feat, bumb it again at level 8...

34+ str isnt really unachieveable at all :D

Hi

Except that Bulls' Strength & str enhancing items are "Enhancement Bonuses", & don't stack, but I see where you're coming from.

Dragon Disciple would be interesting, though.........

Some random comments based on the original thread ..

One of my favourite Dwarf Gods because he is such a great role play tool (obsessed genocidal and all doom and gloom) .. Gendwar Angrim .. is a promoted hero. As a bonus he has war domain and favored weapon exotic version of the dwarven waraxe.

primary factors for choosing a God in living greyhawk.....

- is it a regional diety for your region ? If so you may get some nice metaorg benefits locally.

- does the alignment work for you

- does the God's character fit your PC's outlook on life

- prestige classes .. do you want to be a radiant servant perhaps ?? then you need a deity with sun

- most importantly .. DOMAINS

Domains are even more important if you are thinking of taking Domain Spontaniety for one of your domains.

A couple of the popular Domains include:

WAR (free weapon focus on favored weapon .. good spells)

TRAVEL (fly and dimension door at higher levels with domain spontaniety make the whole party fly))

GLORY (seriously better turning of undead)

STRENGTH (with spontaniety convert all your level 2's to bull strength)

MAGIC (pick up a fireball wand and fire it off like a wizzie)

Hi

Also, with Magic Domain is the 'Free' ID Item spell at 2nd lvl! (No Material Component - Divine Focus instead).

Windstorm (old Weather Domain), also grants StormLord Prc.

Trickery has Disguise Self & Invis as spells

Celerity has Haste & other useful stuff

Force (Boccob) has Mage Armour & Magic Missile

Lots to choose from - that's why I love Clerics. :D
