Because of the new LGCS, I am ultimately confused. My Paladin-ish character has just went up to Level 7...thusly, my cohort is bumped up to Level 5. He is now an Ex-Bard 2/Marshall 3. He has just reached 8,137 XP with the last mod in mind. That being said...

Do I reset my cohort's XP with this recent level gain?

What about gold? I find that I have 2,591 GP saved up from all of the other mods that he's played in. His Level 4 NPC wealth was 3,300 gp and now at Level 5...it's 4,300 gp.

Do I gain 1,000 gp or something? How is this done and how is it properly recorded on an AR? I don't want to suffer an RPGA infraction because the LGCS doesn't make sense to me ;-)

Do I reset my cohort's XP with this recent level gain?According to my understanding and the way I have been playing it, resets to the new level's xp.What about gold? Also according to my understanding and the way I have been playing it, this also resets, you lose unspent gold, if any. A good reason to spend as much as possible (up to the limitation) on expendables with your cohort's wealth.

Now here's another question...if I spend the gold on something before levelling, do I get to keep the things I bought or are they all gone as well? See, it seems redundant to even earn gold for your cohort if you can't even spend it.

yes, just set him at the appropriate xp-value. only if your cohort looses a level in between your main character leveling, you have to keep track of your cohort's xp.

What about gold? I find that I have 2,591 GP saved up from all of the other mods that he's played in. His Level 4 NPC wealth was 3,300 gp and now at Level 5...it's 4,300 gp.

you have to calculate the total wealth of your cohort, including all gear, equipment AND spellbooks according to full gp value.

look up Table 4-23: NPC Gear Value in the DMG 127

if the value of your cohort sums up higher than the NPC wealth from the table, your cohort looses gp.

if the value sums up lower than the NPC wealth from the table, your cohort gains gp.

the rule is sub-optimal, especcially for fighter types and wizards, but obviously this rule try to prevent "ueber cohorts" that take the place of the main character.

ps: for easy wealth calculation i have an excel sheet available at my homepage at

Now here's another question...if I spend the gold on something before levelling, do I get to keep the things I bought or are they all gone as well? You can keep anything newly purchased as long as it is under the max. value for the NPC wealth for the cohort's new level. See, it seems redundant to even earn gold for your cohort if you can't even spend it.Buy the expendables, and make a point of using them. Buy highly useful stuff. There was a thread around here recently about what to purchase with your first ARs, in that thread folks gave their recommendations for other expendable items that everyone should have. Get potions of fly, get potions of haste, potions of enlarge, potions of remove disease, potions remove blindness, potions of gaseous form, tanglefoot bags, oil of bless weapon, oil of shillelagh.

The 10% limit puts a sharp restriction on how many consumables the cohort can have/use. My sorceress actually owns most of the consumables that her cohort uses. I limit the cohort's consumables to stuff that only she can activate, but yeah, I do fill out the 10% limit. I don't use the consumables any more than I would on a normal char though - I use them when they're useful, but most of the time the base build can get it done without consumables.

I buy permanent items and then sometimes sell them back when the char levels. Mostly I buy adventure-limited and favor-limited items to keep, and then buy/sell back the basic vest of resistance or similar core access stuff to lower levels if needed to bring the cash back down when the char levels. I rationalize this as her donating money to the "Resistance against Iuz in the BK" (and that's also what she's doing when not adventuring with my sorceress), which explains both why she's always broke, and why she sometimes needs to adventure out of region with Olivia, both to help her cousin with whatever crazy thing she's doing today, but also to raise more cash for her own clan and causes.

Of course I developed my cohort personality with the weird cohort restrictions as a given. She might not have the same backstory/personality if the rules were different.

Only thing I have him use anyways are Scrolls of Enlarge Person, Bull's Strength, and my Scroll's of Fly. He is pretty handy- I don't know how I would plan on taking on APL 8 without him ;-) Go Sancho!

You've got a "Sancho" too eh?

I've had mine for about three years now, and so far nobody has (to my knowledge) has sussed why.

I know why you call them "Sancho"

DON QUIXOTE
I am I, Don Quixote,
The Lord of la Mancha,
My destiny calls and I go,
And the wild winds of fortune
Will carry me onward,
Oh whithersoever they blow!
SANCHO
I'm Sancho! Yes, I'm Sancho!
I'll follow my master till the end.
I'll tell all the world proudly
I'm his squire! I'm his friend!

DON QUIXOTE, SANCHO
Whithersoever they blow,
Onward to glory I {we} go!
