For an upcoming 36 hour game, I decided to get a bunch of friends together to go for the first time. After much thought, here's what I'm probably going to play. Helpfull criticism would be appreciated.
Human Female (feats) [Class Abilities]
Rogue 1 (Finesse, Weapon Focus (Dagger)) [SA:1d6, Trap Finding]
Rogue 2 [Evasion]
Rogue 3 (Point Blank Shot) [SA:2d6, Trap Sense]
Rogue 3/Ranger 1 [Favored Enemy-Undead, Wild Empathy, Track]
Rogue 3/Ranger 2 [Combat Style:TWF]
Rogue 3/Ranger 2/Fighter 1 (Precise Shot, Far Shot)
Rogue 3/Ranger 2/Fighter 2 (Improved Initiative)
Rogue 3/Ranger 2/Fighter 2/Master Thrower 1 [Palm Throw or Sneaky Shot]
Rogue 3/.../Master Thrower 1/Occult Slayer 1 (Improved TWF) [Craploads]
Then alternate between master thrower and occult slayer every 2 levels or so.
What do you think? I originally was alternating between invisible blade and master thrower, then I realized that my will save would be some ungodly thing like 1+0... "Please don't dominate me Mr. Wizard, I don't want to filet my own party with mounds of sneak attack damage and knives!" The Occult Slayer is there so that horrid situation won't occur. My party of friends consists of- Human Bard, Dwarven Barbarian, Gnome Druid, Dwarven Cleric, and a Human Paladin. My role in the party is scout, thief, and general dexterous person. The favored enemy:Undead is to help counter my inability to sneak attack undead. Heh... Eat your heart out, lich wizard ;-).

36 hour home game? (or is this a convention?) I'd like to know what 6 adventures is going to take up that much time, Also some prestige classes take some time out of game to take levels in, The invisible slayer for example requires you to set up a duel through your local Triad. Also, you need a herald level GM to run these adventures. Also, do all of you have RPGA numbers? Living Greyhawk is a Living Campaign, If this sounds strange to you, you might want to take a very detailed look at the RPGA website.

I've never been to an RPGA con/game before, so i dont have a number, although I've passed the herald level test before (my number is in the mail). I've read the RPGA greyhawk rules front to back twice. Master Thrower and Occult Slayer have no OOG requirments, and it's invisible blade, not invisible slayer. It's a small convention for midwest Arkansas. There will be DMs there to run the adventures, and all my friends and I are going to be players in the same group. As to the 6 adventures, your guess is as good as mine.

What do you think?

You need to take another look at the PHB. Both Weapon Finesse and Weapon Focus require a +1 BAB, which your rogue doesn't have at 1st level. So pretty much the whole PC is illegal.

Or just take one of the levels of ranger at first level - fewer skill points, but then the feats work out ok.

I'd also question the occult slayer bit. That allows you to get +d6 damage against spell casting or using creatures, which at high levels tends to be most people.... but it is only with the one weapon - which as a character based around throwing, you would likely only get to use once a combat before picking it up again.

Still, its a perfectly reasonable build.

good luck!

...wow. I feel blind and retarded.

Human Female (feats) [Class Abilities]
Rogue 1 (Point Blank Shot, Improved Initiative)[SA:1d6, Trap Finding]
Rogue 2 [Evasion]
Rogue 3 (Weapon Finesse) [SA:2d6, Trap Sense]
Rogue 3/Ranger 1 [Favored Enemy-Undead, Wild Empathy, Track]
Rogue 3/Ranger 2 [Combat Style:TWF]
Rogue 3/Ranger 2/Fighter 1 (Precise Shot, Weapon Focus (Dagger))
Rogue 3/Ranger 2/Fighter 2 (Far Shot)
Rogue 3/Ranger 2/Fighter 2/Master Thrower 1 [Palm Throw or Sneaky Shot]
Rogue 3/.../Master Thrower 1/Occult Slayer 1 (Improved TWF) [Craploads]

By the time I get to Occult Slayer, I could most likely pick up a +1 Dagger of Returning so the whole special weapon thing isn't a problem. Or, I could just not wield it and quickdraw it out when I need it.

So, are you never planning on taking Precise Shot? I know that really no one is that good with ranged attacks unless they have this feat.

I don't remember ever seeing a returning weapon on an AR (out of 140 or so), so it may be harder to find than you think.

OoX Sam I Am XoO :

If you're going to the Con I think you are, there is a returning weapon favor in the 2-round metaregional module. Unfortunately, the module has a minimum APL of 6. :(

By the time I would get to occult slayer, I would be level 9. Can I not just have someone create a simple +1 returning Dagger? If not, I can always have my "special weapon" sheathed, then quickdraw it out to beat a wizard up or reflect a spell, then put it back.

"Can I not just have someone create a simple +1 returning Dagger?"

Nope; unfortunately, LG operates under what is essentially an "every PC is an island" concept in that regard. If you can find someone to make it for you compliments of an AR or other campaign documentation (such as a metagroup), then you could do so. But no, you can't just walk up to a random PC or NPC and hire them to do so. Check out the LGCS for more information.

No. PCs can not create items for each other. Items can not be transferred between PCs. If you always adventure with the same person, they could create such an item and lend it to you, but they would have to pay the XP and GP cost for it (you can't reimburse them). In addition, they must have AR access in order to use magic item creation to give the returning quality to a weapon.

Since you haven't actually played in a LG event, you may wish to keep in mind that experience and treasure are very strictly capped by your current character level. If you always played "up", which is 1-2 levels higher than your current level, earning max xp without any penalties, it will take about 30 different single round adventures to get to level 9 (optimistically). Any specials can help and interactives or meta activities will hurt. Getting up in levels takes time.

9 regular adventures, (including a few intros) at a decent con, should place you middle of 3rd level.

I recommend your group start with mostly introductory events and enjoy the time playing.

I would suggest that you take precise shot at 1st level rather than 6th if you're going to be a missle specialist...The enemy is almost always going to be in melee with the tank in the party, so you don't want the -4 penalty...And again, if you're going to be a missile specialist, weapon finesse is less useful as well (since you're not in melee much to take advantage of it)...

The reason I asked about your campaign is that you mapped out 9 levels; the only people I've seen do that before were people playing Legend of the Green Regent.

In addition, as stated by others, to get to level 9 is going to take you 30+ TU's if you're lucky. And that's assuming you get every single module for one TU.

Realistically, you're going to be lucky to reach level 8 by the end of a single year (Characters are only allowed 52 TU's a year), and you'll level slightly slower the next year as well.

Since this is your first character in LG, I suggest you go back and come up with a slightly simpler template - pick one base class, perhaps a side level of something you want, and just ONE prestige class that you'd like it to eventually become perhaps. Remember, you can be perfectly viable without having any prestige classes at all as well.

This is a roleplaying game. Come at it from the perspective of what your character concept is, what your character would want to do, rather than trying to min/max for something or other. The most fun characters are always the ones with ample roleplaying opportunities - the Rogue with a bullwhip and 12 ranks in Profession: Cook for instance :)

I would personally add that the latest modules I have played seem to be asking more and more non combat related skill checks. Knowledge (Region), Knowledge (Religion), Knowledge (The Planes) Diplomacy, Sense Motive, Perform (Belly Dancing), Speak Language (Ancient Suloise), Speak Language (Halfling), ... have all proved very useful lately.

LG is not only about Door-Monster-Treasure type of adventures.

Yeah, Living Greyhawk is actually not at all about Door-Monster-Treasure...

Its more like, Mind Your Own Business-Ungodly Monsters built specific to the encounter that will always surprise you-Treasure you can't keep unless you can afford it-End up with a crappy unavoidable curse you are stuck with until the sequel to the adventure comes ou. :D

That being said, LG is actually pretty fun because you see some absolutely goofy stuff. I started playing this year and have a character at 6th level by spending about 37 time units over twenty-some modules. Its a pretty slow progression, but its all gravy.

My only point that I have to put in at this point is that your selection of favoured enemy for ranger is not exactly worth it. Undead are not worth the hassle of having as a FE, they are not subject to crits, ergo you do not get the +2 dam. Also, how often are you to encounter undead in your region?

In lieu of the undead I suggest Magical beasts. I find that they are encountered a lot in every region (unless you are from Geoff and have Giants everywhere, but you aren't). They do fall victim to the +2 damage, and they are more likely to try to be conversational... at least in comparison to the skeleton who is a mindless pile of bones.

These are my 2 cents.

"Undead are not worth the hassle of having as a Favored Enemy, they are not subject to crits, ergo you do not get the +2 damage."

Sure you do -- you might want to read up on the 3.5 version of Favored Enemy; a lot has changed since 3.0.

The best one for any ranger to take as Favored Enemy is humanoid (human), since they are by far the most often encountered 'bad guy' in mods, generally speaking.. But your local region may also have a lot to do in determining FE. In Geoff, as mentioned, we get a lot of giants, so that's never a bad choice. However, due to the cultural custom of burning our dead, we have very little undead roaming around, so that makes an otherwise acceptable choice less impressive. It all depends on what you are likely to come across.

I concur that as a thrower, you want Precise Shot at first level. Don't worry too much about the Returning Dagger. By 9th level, you are almost certainly going to run across a general favor like "so and so can find you any item from the DMG priced below...", etc

As to levels in a year, I find most people only reach 6th in 52 TUs. Yeah, you can get more if you always play up to the next APL (and rarely if ever play down) and play all the regionals and metas with your primary character and never suffer TU penalties from the mods, but realistically, 6 levels is about where most people end up at...

Heh...The max one could theoretically get playing all current and past year regionals and meta regionals (18 TUs of regional mods and 14 TUs of Meta-Regionals) and then filling out with Cores (10 modules, 20 TUs worth), always playing up would be 42075xp in one year, making 9th level after TU #44, on AR#38...

Somewhat difficult :D
