Displacement is probably the single best defensive potion you can get. Perhaps a few resist/protection from energy as well (As a paladin 4, you'd be able to use scrolls of resist energy with a caster level check).

As a rule I'm only fond of defensive consumables that have significant duration, so you use them BEFORE a combat starts, not DURING. So something like Barskskin is preferable to shield of faith, and circle of prot evil scroll is better than prot evil scroll, even though much more expensive.

A round spent buffing yourself is a round that you might as well not even be at the table, the only exception being if you are being targeted by lots of stuff and the alternative is that you die, taking away your actions for the rest of the fight.

The main exception to that is battlefield control consumables. Like scrolls of obscuring mist or web. Battlefield control helps keep more than just you alive, so it both protects you AND takes enough actions from the enemy to be worth losing your action.

(whose L15 monk-with-wizard-level kept every low AC part member (including himself) alive in the game he played yesterday with a humble 25gp scroll of obscuring mist, after the first three of 36 incoming ranged attacks proved both accurate and to do significant damage on a per-attack basis. "I step into initiative now GM...." He carefully left the high AC expertising/defensive guy outside the mist to give the remaining folks a target they couldn't hit....)

Probably the most consumable-intensive battle I've ever fought was a situation in Red Hand of Doom. My character had the following buffs on her for most of the multi-round encounters, and most of these came from scrolls (Because the stuff in her head was needed for the fights)

This was at APL8. Character was a light infantry type with some druid battlefield control spells prepped that day.

greater mage armor
circle of prot evil
barkskin (+3)
prot arrows (scraped off by end of second encounter)
slow poison (and yes, she got poisoned a couple times)
prot energy (fire) (48 of 60 points used up by end of day)
resist energy lightning (10 points) (targeted multiple times with lightning)
air walk
walk the mountain path (RS, lets you charge up and down 45 degree inclines allowed by air walk with no balance check or slowdown in speed required)

She also had bull strength, owl wisdom and bear endurance running for many of the fights, but we eventually ran out. She had blur in one fight. She had haste in several fights, some off consumables. She also had her usual package of greater magic fang, longstrider, raptor's sight and listening lorecall running, but those all came out of her head.

Displacement on a potion is exceedingly expensive for 5 rounds of 50% protection, of which you can only fight in 4 rounds. I suspect the 750gp would be better spent on a potion of barskskin (300gp, 30 minutes), a scroll of circle of prot evil (375gp, 50 minutes...you can cast it if your wis is 13, or get someone else to cast), with 75gp leftover for other stuff. +2-4 to AC immunity to most mind control effects other than fear (and you are already immune to that) , summoned creatures unable to hurt you with natural attacks etc will do more for you than a 50% miss chance, especially as you are ACTING in round 1, not just drinking a potion.

There are also some nice (ir pricey) Elixirs in the MIC that last for hours: they mostly give Natural Armour +something.
