| zoinks6905-21-06, 07:30 PM | Here's a weird one for you all (I think). Are there any deities that are approved for PC worship in LG that have the Crossbow as a favored weapon? I've checked the Deities document and the closest it gets is entries in "other weapons" for a handful of gods. Perhaps that answers my question, but it does seem a little odd that it's not an option. There's a god for spiked chain and a "lord of swords" whose followers are still allowed to use crossbows, but nothing that fits what I need. Reason it comes up is that I'm rolling up another character. Probably looking at a Wood Elf (though the -2 int hurts) or High Elf (either way, the -2 con hurts, but that's why she'd be an archer type). Since her Str wouldn't be spectacular (as points would go into Cha of 14 or 16), I'd prefer the greater crit range of a crossbow over the 20/x3 for a longbow. Progression would be something like Marshal 1, Paladin 2, Ranger 3, then jumping to a mix of Wildrunner and Horizon Walker. I'd love to get Pious Templar in there too, but that's where the problem comes in. Comments are appreciated. |

I only find the following: Mouqol: Other prefered weapon: Light Crossbow Murlynd: Other prefered weapon: Light Crossbow I chose a Wood Elf Ranger Archer and placed my stats in Dex (18) and Str (16). Didn't find the Int or Con penalties to hurt. 4 points in each gave me a final score of 10, so no penalty. With a cleric, I don't think you could afford an 18 in Str or Dex though. Crossbow has the downside that if you want greater damage, you need larger crossbows which take longer to reload. Longbow get's you the possiblity of multiple shots per round. -Swiftbrook |

Longbow get's you the possiblity of multiple shots per round. Rapid reload solves that problem for light crossbows. However, you could still take weapon focus in a back-up weapon if you really wanted to get into pious templar. |

Hmm, interesting idea there. I had already figured on Rapid Reload for a light crossbow so that she could take as many shots as needed (and it makes the character a little more interesting as I'm not sure I've ever known someone to take the feat). Thanks for that :) |

Unless you are going to have less than 10 Strength, a longbow should average the same damage as a light crossbow, and with 12 or more strength a mighty version will do more damage. Of course, a crossbow protects you from strength drain as well... I DMed a game yesterday that had a cleric with Rapid Shot and Precise Shot, and she was very effective at hitting, so it can work out well. |
| zoinks6905-22-06, 05:05 PM | Yeh, I've more or less given up on crossbow as an option. It would be fun for a non-elf PC, but I'd like to get Wildrunner, so that's out. Lemme throw out the build and I'm open to suggestions: Wood elf (could be High elf instead) S: 12 (2) D: 16/18 (10) C: 14/12 (6) I: 8/6 (0) W: 10 (2) C: 15 (8) L1: Ranger (for the skill points, otherwise I'd start with Marshal), Track, Favored Enemy, and either PBS or Improved Init L2: Marshal (there's a reason for that high Cha, though I could easily bump it down one to put 2 points elsewhere -- Int likely), Motivate Dexterity aura. This unfortunately pushes Woodland Archer back by one level at least (3 in this version) but this is "does weird stuff in and out of combat" PC, not a super-archer, though she ends up being a good shot. Saves should be ok, though I wish there were more levels to play with so I could get in 2 paladin levels (Cha to saves) and Pious Templar (2 more will and fort, mettle) -- ok, well there are currently 2 levels to play with as far as LG goes, but I was trying to get to Planar mastery as soon as reasonable. L3 & 4: Ranger (Rapid Shot, Endurance, Precise Shot) Endurance being the key to both Wildrunner and Horizon Walker. L5: Barbarian or Fighter, Barbarian preferred to get the extra speed, Rage, and Survival as a class skill. L6 & L7: Wildrunner (probably taking extra rage to sync with Primal Scream (so likely +6 str, +4 con, +6 dex, +2 will save, +1 AC during combat), 10 more feet of movement) L8-L13: Horizon Walker. This gives all sorts of nice stuff (darkvision, immune to fatigue, bonus to key skills), but tops out with Planar Terrain Mastery (shifting) which gives D-Door as a spell-like ability (every 1d4 rounds) as a 'Get Out of Jail Free' card when 50' of movement isn't enough. Who knows if I'll ever get that far with this PC (my 5th or 6th), but it's fun to think about. If I made a mistake or you have better ideas, feel free to share them. |
