I am looking for a deity with this domain, as it's an open domain, and sounds like it will suit my Cleric cohort of my pirate (long story, ended up going with the cleric)

Is there any help in this regard? The domain is open access, but the only gods I know of that allow it are evil (?!?), I was wondering if its been added to any non evil aquatic gods? Clearly it makes sense that it has been if its open, but I only have the LGCS deities document 2 to go off, and it doesn't have the Blackwater domain in it...

I've never even heard of the Blackwater Domain. Where is that from?

Its from Storm Wrack - has funky spells and seems cool.

Also has Evards as a Domain Spell, as well as Transformation of the Deep, waterbreathing, darkvision, endure elements as one spell... (lasts hour/level)

Unfortunately, there seems to be no current legal (Or even 'illegal') diety in the dieties document with that domain. Yes, it is open. Yes, No diety in LG grants it. Don't ask why, We'll just have to wait for the new Dieties document that was due ages ago.

2 Deities have it thanks to Stormwrack, issue is one is CE other is LE...

It's really unfortunate, as I want to give it to my clerical cohort... are we allowed to be clerics of "causes" in LG? or did they disallow that for domain cheesiness...

I do find it a little frustrating that the new LGCS is out but the corresponding deities document isn't...

It's with Steven Conforti , IIRC. It's due, yes. I am waiting for it myself, hoping that it will allow dragon dsiicples to worship dragon deities, so I don't actually need a feat that I can technically not use (as it was updated in a book I don't have).
Anyway, it doesn't sound like a domain most deities have. x
I don't really know any... doesn't seem to fit Procan much, and I fear he comes closest. Sekolah, perhaps (but he's evil). Maybe a Touv or Olman deity.

Sekolah and Blibdoolpoolp have it according to Stormwrack, but it wouldn't be an open feat if some non evil gods weren't going to get it.

Definitely doesn't seem very "good" godlike

It'll be out 'in a few days' from March 2nd, 2005

Oh, give 'em a break, Dale. :)

Obviously, it either took on less priority than anticipated, or the project grew into something more extensive than the update originally anticipated.

Yeah, I know. And I know they are volunteers. But I mean 'a few days' and it hasn't happened 2 years later?

Yeah, I know. And I know they are volunteers. But I mean 'a few days' and it hasn't happened 2 years later?

The circle apparently decided other things were a higher priority (like adaptables). I can get what I need out of the deities document and that is good enough for me.

Since the Blackwater domain is Open, my sorceress can use Limited Wish to duplicate some of its spells.

What's the granted power of the Blackwater domain? Is it as useful as the Magic or Glory domain? =P
JJeff

05-10-07, 09:02 PM
Oh, definately VERY useful. You become immune to damage from water pressure when you are descending to the depths of the ocean.

That is so cool...
[/sacarsm]

Glory has a good domain abaility, but Magic.... Very seldom does a cleric have the spell on their spell list that is so unique that they would require a arcane magic device to use it, that they can't already use themselves without the item

Dragon Disciples can worship dragon deities under the current document...

once they undergo apotheosis at lvl 10

Full dragon disciples, yes, but with partial levels? I haven't seen that anywhere, unless I overlooked it. You either need to be a dragon, or have one of a set of feats (Draconic Heritage, Dragon Friend, or Dragon Thrall, iirc).

As to the domain being Open: just ebcause it is, doesn't mean a current deity has to grant it. It merely means that if a deity (or a Prestige Class), ever does, that it can be selected.

Since the Blackwater domain is Open, my sorceress can use Limited Wish to duplicate some of its spells.

You can only duplicate the spells that you have access to. If you have access to the spells already, access to the domain doesn't help much. Only clerics with the domain have access to all the spells on it and then it's only for their domain slots.

Where's that rule? I can't find anything like that in the LGCS.

LGCS, page 17
===
Limited wish: You must have access to a spell in order to
duplicate its effects.
===

LGCS, page 31
===
Open Domains
Blackwater (Sto)
===

That seems pretty cut-and-dried to me.

The only other thing I see apropos those rules is:

LGCS, page 20
===
Q: Does a cleric with access to a domain get access to
all the spells in that domain as well?
A: If a cleric has a domain that has spells that are not
normally accessible to that PC, they receive access to those
spells as domain spells only.
===

None of those things seem to imply your statement that, "Only clerics with the domain have access to all the spells on it and then it's only for their domain slots."

Here's the domain:

BLACKWATER DOMAIN
Deities: Blibdoolpoolp, Sekolah, Yeathan
Granted Power: You are immune to pressure damage
from descending into even the greatest of oceanic
depths.
Blackwater Domain Spells
1 Cause Fear: One creature of 5 HD or less flees for
1d4 rounds.
2 Pressure Sphere*: Water pressure deals 4d6 damage
to submerged targets.
3 Evard’s Black Tentacles: Tentacles grapple all
within 20-ft. spread.
4 Transformation of the Deeps*: Grant water
breathing, darkvision, and pressure immunity to
one creature/3 levels.
5 Blackwater Tentacle*: Create blackwater tentacle
that attacks your foe.
6 Blackwater Taint*: Desecrate water, deal 1d6/2
levels negative energy damage, bestow a negative
level.
7 Dark Tide*: Infuse water over a large area
with negative energy, causing weakness and
1d6 damage/hour.
8 Maelstrom*: Conjures a deadly whirlpool to
suck in and batter foes.
9 Doom of the Seas*: Summons a fiendish
kraken under your command.
*New spell described in this chapter.

The only spell that really looks worth duplicating with a Limited Wish is Transformation of the Deeps. That could help the entire party (well, five of us) if we're suddenly plunged deep underwater.

I think that the Domain is Open and anyone with the Domain can use the spells for their Domain Slots.

However the spells would need to be Open separately in order for you to be able to use them without also having the Domain.

If you think that's overly nice then I refer you to Britt's thoughts on variant Bracers of Armour.

Again, I don't see any rules stating or implying that. Where does this come from? Be specific, please.

What thoughts are you refering to?

I searched the Q&A thread, but I couldn't find Britt's thoughts on those variant bracers.

I did find the question:

You quoted the reason in your own post. A cleric with the blackwater domain can only use the limited spells from that domain with their domain slots. They cannot use them in their normal cleric spell slots. Making the domain open doesn't allow the same access as opening the spells.

Sure, I realize that I can't create a PC cleric who can cast the spells, but because the domain is Open, I should be able to use Limited Wish to duplicate a level 5 or lower divine spell cast by a cleric with the Blackwater domain.

If you know of any rules specifically preventing that, please give me a reference. Thanks!

Limited Wish only gives you access to open spells. Those spells are only open to you if you cast it from a domain slot. Limited Wish doesn't grant you the ability to cast the spell as if you cast it from a domain slot.
_metz_

05-15-07, 12:12 PM
Exactly, open domains doesn't mean: open spells. It means open as a DOMAIN choice. Hence you can use it as a domain spell, or with domain spontaneity. Or even Arcane Disciple.

But not limited wish.

That would be my interpretation of it, perhaps this is a good Question to be posted to Britt on the Q and A thread.
kjenks

05-15-07, 03:28 PM
You might want to check that out again. The LG version of Limited Wish doesn't limit you to Open spells.
bitznarf

05-15-07, 03:32 PM
"Limited wish: You must have access to a spell in order to duplicate its effects."
Thus, "Is X spell open to you?" "No." "Then you can't duplicate its effects."
kjenks

05-15-07, 03:47 PM
You're just waving your hands there. The domain is Open.
bitznarf

05-15-07, 04:01 PM
Right, the domain is open, and for the purpose of the domain slots for a cleric with the domain, the spell is open. Not for anything else.
kjenks

05-15-07, 05:51 PM
What rule says that?
bitznarf

05-15-07, 06:04 PM
You already quoted the rule earlier:
LGCS, page 20
===
Q: Does a cleric with access to a domain get access to
all the spells in that domain as well?
A: If a cleric has a domain that has spells that are not
normally accessible to that PC, they receive access to those
spells as domain spells only.
===
Thus, having access to a domain is not enough to open the spell as a whole for the PC. Your PC has access to the Blackwater Domain. That does not mean that the spells contained within are open to your PC. And because Limited Wish can only duplicate the effects of spells that are open to your PC, the NONC ones on the Blackwater domain listed are not available for duplication without specific access.
