In a game over the past weekend, the party druid cast an Entangle, which lasts a pretty long time (e.g. in combat rounds). After the combat was over, they wanted to go loot the bodies, but I told them that the Entangle was still in effect and they would have to wait until it expired. The druid said he could just "dismiss" the spell and it would be gone immediately. Since I wanted to move on with the game, I said fine and let them search without waiting.

However, now that I've had some time to look it up, I can't find anything that allows a caster to "dismiss" his/her fixed duration spells automatically (e.g. Blade Barrier, Cloudkill, Obscuring Mist, Web, etc.). Does anyone know if there's an Errata or clarification for this somewhere? Is it in the PHB or DMG somewhere that I just haven't found? If there is, can you please send me the reference?

Thanks,
Marcia

The Druid player was 100% correct. Look at the 'Duration' line of the spell descriptions and if there is a '(D)' the spell can be dismissed at anytime the caster desires before the spell expires.

This bit is detailed on page 176 of the RPHB, under the heading of Duration and subheading of (D) Dismissable.

Thank you! I couldn't find "dismiss" in the index and didn't really pay any attention to the (D) by the duration. Guess I should have looked up "duration", instead. I'm glad I asked instead of feeling like a fool the next time it came up and I still didn't know.

It's still a fair question, though, since not every spell is Dismissable. If it doesn't have that (D), they'll need to cast a Dispel on it.
