Hey Folks

If you are attack through an ally to an enemy that is around a corner, How many negatives does your attack take?

-4 soft cover (ally)
-4 hard cover (corner)

-8 Total

Or does only 1 type of cover apply?

Cheers

Cover is Cover and gives +4 regardless of source.

A GM can decide if there is enough cover to constitute Improved Cover but the bar is usually set rather a lot higher (iirc the example in the PHB is of an arrow slit)

EDIT: ARG COVER GIVES PLUS 4 to AC. There is no penalty at all.

Yeah. Essentially a GM can decide "enough is enough" and upgrade cover to improved cover. Ie, if I'm shooting past 3 creatures, at an enemy which has hard cover except against one corner, the GM is well within his rights to add 8 to the enemy AC instead of 4.

Which is another reason why guided shot (or for higher levels, improved precise shot) rocks. I use guided shot routinely in such circumstances with my arcane archer to make it so the GM doesn't have to make the call :)

Be nicer to get a AR that unlocks Coordinated Shot. :)

Nah. I have more spell slots than feats. By the time I have another feat slot I'll qualify for improved precise shot, which is strictly superior. Guided shot is also useful for the concealment defeating and the range mod ignoring.

"Yeah, he's got blur running, he's 1500' away and taking cover from his gryphon mount. I still get to shoot him with the same mods as if he was 40' away in an open plane. Hope for his sake he has a lot of hitpoints....thunk thunk thunk..."

of course if I was really mean, I 'd just shoot the gryphon out from under him....
