Make a DC 22 Reflex save from the maximized, enlarged and empowered fireball to take half of 72 (8d6 + 50%) damage.

Next time search the thread for traps before just clicking on it.

ummm... are you sure you're posting in the APL 2 forum, because, you know, this seems a little harsh for APL 2.

It's either that or:

"This mod is so broken that author should be banned from life!"

Seriously any reasonable trapped thread would have as a minimum an unluck coupled with a maximised CL20 twinned disintegrate.

My level 8 stonelord could fail and survive that fireball trap with more than 50 hit points to spare.

The cute thing about Disintegrate is that it has to hit first.

Also, it can only hit one target.

You've got a good touch AC, right?...Right?

Nahh, Maximized Disintegrate is a waste. Just have everyone's souls get sucked into another plane with boxtext. Much more effective.

Much better to have an 80 foot pit trap with an 8d8 Flame Strike at the bottom, at APL 4 or 6 (actual year 5 VTF trap).

Grr, on VTF modules that aren't in Verbobonc or Dyvers.

True that, the Reflex DC to escape box text is 99, and box text explicitly disallows a 20 as an auto success.

I found the trap in advance by hovering over the thread name - what's the Disable Device DC? :)

DC 35

DMG, pages 74-75

The trapmaker must have the Craft Wondrous Item feat.

That trap was a level 9 spell with average damage 72, with a high Search DC and a high Disable Device DC, so this is a CR 14 trap.

-100 gp Trigger Type = Touch (attached)
-500 gp Reset Type = No reset
+400 gp Disable Device DC = 22

That trap cost a base of 50 gp x CL 8 x 9th = 3600 gp - 100 - 500 + 400

= 3400 gp total

The DC to disable that trap is 34, not 35.

SRD - Disable Device skill
===
Restriction: Rogues (and other characters with the trapfinding class feature) can disarm magic traps. A magic trap generally has a DC of 25 + the spell level of the magic used to create it.
===

It's also a DC 34 Search check to find it.

SRD - Search skill
===
Task Search DC
--- ---
Find a magic trap (rogue only)[1] 25 + level of spell used to create trap

[1] Dwarves (even if they are not rogues) can use Search to find traps built into or out of stone.

= 7450 gp total
The caster level for this trap appears to be 8, not 17, otherwise the base damage would be 10d6, not the posted 8d6. The metamagic would be coming from sudden feats or rods or the like I think.

And the average damage is actually MAX(8d6) + AVG(4d6) = 48 + 14 = 62. It appears that the OP maximized the empowered portion of the spell.

That doesn't appear to affect the trap cost, CR or DC. It's all based on spell level, and that's spell level 9 after applying those metamagic feats -- no matter how they were obtained.

Right, but your formula is using both spell level and caster level, wouldn't it be 50*8*9-100-500+400=3400 then?

Oops, I die.

Seems like others just can't handle the harsh truth, and invent abilities to themselves. :( Shame on others!

Then again ... Reincarnate! (from a friend, duh) ...51. Half-elf. Well, it could be worse. +2 to Diplomacy, yay!

Interesting .. not that it comes up very often but I would have assumed the two effects stacked.

The Maximize Spell feat description begins on PH page 97. Due to bad editing, there's another paragraph at the top of the next page, and there's no clue on page 97 that you should keep reading. If you just read page 97, you could miss this paragraph.
