Painlord 11-01-07, 09:58 PM	Geez-- The things I do for flava. My new Greyhawk Ruins character intends to join and be a part of the Merchants' & Traders' Union. (see Greyhawk Ruins Sourcebook, pg 20). It's mostly an absolutely useless metaorg (unless I'm missing something...am I missing something?!?!?!) as it grants access to "useful" Greyhawk goods like Ice Skates, Drills, and Sun Goggles...except for one item, which actually MIGHT be useful: Earthsilk Jersey (Races of Stone, Table 7-4). This jersey, costing 150gp, grants DR 1/slashing & bludgeoning. I'm fairly new to the game so I'm confused...does anyone out there think this is worth it? And am I understanding it correctly that every time I get PIERCED, I take 1 off the damage? Thanks, Painlord
bitznarf 11-02-07, 12:10 AM	Is that: 'slashing AND bludgeoning', or is it: 'slashing OR bludgeoning? If it is 'AND' then anytime you are hit with a weapon that isn't slashing AND bludgeoning (can't recall any off hand) you take 1 less damage. That means rapiers, daggers, swords, axes, arrows... etc.

I bought an Earthsilk Jersey back in Year 5, and bother to pay the upkeep required to maintain it, but I never actually use it. Now, I don't have Races of Stone with me, but what use is it exactly? Is it just piercing that it protects against? Are there any conditions? What's up? The rules on this always confused me in at least some small manner.

Natural Attacks are slashing/piercing/bludgeoning all at once. That's why the Earthsilk Jersey wouldn't protect against it.

Some natural attacks are all three types, others are not. While a bite is all three, a gore or sting is piercing only, while a slam is bludgeoning only. The description of the standard natural attack types are found on p. 312 of the MM.
Timlagor 11-07-07, 07:50 PM	DR 1 against all arrows and many a Rogue seems well worth 150gp (really that cheap?) especially since it's a non-magical item iirc so it won't interfere with wearing a Vest of Resistance (if it does then forget it)

So, you experienced LG types, do you think it's wise for a lower level character (under 6th) to pay 150gp for DR 1 from arrows, bolts, and whatever else that may be piercing? I don't know that I feel that it is...I don't have much experience, but it seems to me to be pretty rare that your damage is piercing. I dunno...anyone facing hoards of spear wielding kobolds? -R
