| JohnduBois05-20-05, 02:47 AM | So... Looking through Races of the Wild, I discovered an interesting combination of feats. Expeditious Dodge, Races of the Wild, page 150: When you move 40 feet or more in a single turn, you gain a +2 dodge bonus to AC until the beginning of your next turn. This feat can be used in place of Dodge to qualify for a feat, PClass, or other ability. Elusive Target, Complete Warrior, page 110, Diverting Defense and Negate Power Attack abilities: both of these effects gain a bonus against a foe designated to be affected by the character's Dodge feat. If Expeditious Dodge replaces Dodge as the prerequisite for Elusive Target, I see three possible outcomes: 1. I gain the benefits of Elusive Target against all enemies for whom I have a "Dodge feat" bonus (everyone when I move 40 feet or more via Expeditious Dodge). 2. I still designate one character to be specifically affected by Elusive Target. 3. This combination reduces the effectiveness of the Elusive Target feat by denying me any of the benefits granted by selecting a Dodge target, which I technically would not do. Which of these interpretations of this feat interaction is correct? Also, a rules question on Expeditious Dodge itself: The exact wording of the feat as printed is above. Do I have the +2 dodge bonus to AC while I am moving (say, if moving from the "35 ft" square to the "40 ft" square provokes an AOO)? Thanks for any insight. |
| King Kashue05-20-05, 01:20 PM | My take: While Expeditious Dodge can replace Dodge as the prerequisite, there is nothing stating that it replaces dodge in any other way...In this specific instance, there is nothing that says it functions as dodge in the Elusive Target feat...You explicitly need to choose an enemy to dodge (per the dodge feat) in order to activate 2 of 3 elusive target features...Without dodge, you cannot activate those features... If Elusive dodge "chose someone to dodge", I could see it replacing dodge in the functioning of Elusive target, but it does not...Granting a dodge bonus does not mean you "are dodging someone" (since there are plenty of dodge bonuses other than the dodge feat, and most are non-targeted)... |

However, at my table I'd allow the PC to choose a 'dodge buddy' as if they had the Dodge feat, to apply Elusive Target to. I certainly wouldn't allow them to be effectively dodging everyone, Elusive Traget is powerful enough as it is (I know, I have a character with it). --Penn, Ket Triad |
