| Maesto07-12-06, 10:39 AM | Hi all, especially those Palish players =) My main character is a grey-elf wizard of Boccob (CN) gone divine oracle, loremaster and now archmage. In a 594 mod (Iuz metaregion - Shattered Reflections of a Frozen Twilight), I decided not to go for the personal interview with Wee Jas, although it turned out that my chances of survival were actually quite high, given the inordinate number of ranks in knowledge (religion). Earlier this year, in a currently playable mod, a Solar of Pholtus popped up. Given that Boccob had never done anything for Maesto, I decided to request an atonement to the blinding light (yes, I made the knowledge planes check to know that solars have atonements basically on tap). Well, actually, I said "high and I'll convert" and rolled 11 on the d20. Then the first fatespinner said "I want you to reroll that", followed by the second fatespinner, but they were both high, so I atoned to the Blinding Light of Pholtus, and even managed to pick up a private interview ;-) Mind you, most players groan when I bring up the good of following Pholtus... oh, the Tenh series are being played by a different character too ;-) Now, my wizard struggles somewhat with the lawful good part of the religion, moving more towards the lawful neutral part of the spectrum. Out of interest (not that i'm going to actually get to play a Palish mod any time soon), I was wondering how he'd fit into Palish society and the church there present? I've heard rumours of an arcane register, which Maesto would never put himself on. As a respected member of the Den Zauber of Perrenland, such indignity would certainly be beneath him =) Thoughts, anybody? Cheers, Jolyon Relevant knowledge skills: Arcana +29 Religion +28 Planes +29 Spellcraft +34 |

| blood_kite07-12-06, 12:30 PM | Well, while I am not physically located in The Pale I have played quite a number of year 4-6 regionals. My collected thoughts about The Pale: Arcane registry is manditory in The Pale with the result of jail time if you are caught not being registered. http://www.theocracyofthepale.com/gamerules/pale_regional_rules.html#arcane Humans publicly worshipping human deities who are not Pholtus is not tolerated, jail time. Humans publicly worshipping non-human deities is not tolerated, jail time. Non-humans publicly worshipping human deities that aren't Pholtus is not tolerated, jail time. Displaying a holy symbol of the above combinations is not tolerated, jail time. [opinion] Your character would probably be accepted by the church, although you might experience a small amount of predijuce from NPC's written into the module. The elves in the forests inside The Pale might look at you funny. If you accepted an atonement from a servent of Pholtus, became LN, and converted worship to Pholtus it would be highly suspect as to why you would not submit to registration. The Church of Pholtus is the government and physical manifestation of the One True God. Despite Pholtus being LG, The Pale is mostly LN. They see order and stability in the land as more important than the individual. Adventurers are tolerated to a greater or lesser extent because their abilities often surpass the means and capabilities of local government and most adventurers have proven willing to at least work for the greater good. Despite being highly Lawful, exceptions are often made for lesser crimes comitted while trying to prevent greater crimes and evil/chaos. [\opinion] It can be a fun region to play in if you show the local government at least token respect. Went through 9 modules with a Heironean and didn't get arrested (The Pale can't stand Heironeous, for acceptable reasons). |

But if you behave, you won't have any problems, as long as you register as an arcanist (free, but you have to do it). Furriners from anywhere and nonhumans in particular are an ignored minority, they aren't considered unless they cause trouble. They're slightly less likely to be recognized for good things too. Bottom line, adventurers are known to be a diverse, chaotic and liberal lot that hang with heathens and nonhumans. So being a chaotic, heathen, nonhuman adventurer just means you fit the steriotype and reinforce any prejudice against adventurers in general that might exist. Those who like adventurers or use them will overlook your undesirable traits as long as you don't go looking for trouble. Ah..and one more thing - Pholtus isn't just the main deity of the Pale. He's the head of state. Prostylitizing for any other god is the same as sedition in another country - the same as saying the King's bastard son should depose him and take his place. Treat Pholtus with the same respect you'd give royalty and you won't go wrong. You don't have to worshop him. You just have to respect that He is the patron and ruler of the Pale. |
| solbergb07-12-06, 02:05 PM | If you were atoned by the Solar, you're now Lawful good, which would make you "Progressive" in the Pale (a small but vocal minority that is adventurer-friendly and seen as "soft on chaos" sometimes). If in the Pale, you register or face New Dawn time (Which as a Pholtan you might not mind much) to remind you of respect for the Law, which was inspired by Pholtus. If in BK, you wear a hat of disguise. You have to behave properly for the region you're in :) The ostensible reason for registration is that arcane powers aren't as easy as divine powers to distinguish righteous from those who consort with fiends. With a divine caster who gains power from a fiend, they radiate evil. With absence of such a clue, arcane registration means you've been interviewed by the Pholtan representatives and your magic is determined to be from a non-fiendish source. That's the party line anyway. It's fairly non-intrusive, although my wife's sorceress decided to lie during the interview, and the roleplayed situation escalated to where she "demonstrated" her one of her spells on the interviewer. "He ASKED me to do it!" First character I've seen who got New Dawn time before character introduction in her first intro mod :) |
