My Centaur is about to hit 4th level, and i'm leaning towards Exotic Weapon Proficiency, although i'm not sure of a weapon yet. (1st feat was power attack). I figure EWP is good value because i'm otherwise limited to simple and scimitars until i hit 7th level. However, i'm having trouble picking one. Also, i think i'd like to not use the Spiked Chain. Here are the ones i'm considering, starting with the two-handers

Great Falchion: d12-> 3d6 large, crit 18/20.
*Fullblade: 2d8 ->3d8, crit 19/20.
*Longaxe: d12->3d6 damage, crits x3.
However, if i power attack for at least 3, I can use it as a reach weapon.

The * means i'd have metaorg access (from the Dyvers Anti-Slavery League). However, if that access requires me to play in dyvers or the corresponding metaregion, then I really can't do either and won't consider them.

And the onehanders i'm considring:
Bastard Sword: d10 damage ->2d8 crit 19-20
Great Scimitar: d8 damage ->2d6 crit 18-20

I'd only consider a onehander because of the Uncanny Blow ability of the Exotic Weapon Master, but even then i'm not entirely sure it's worth it. Thoughts?

Where do you plan to go with your character? My own centaur went with exotic weapon proficiency [great falchion] at level 1 and is using his few feats to do more damage with it, power attack, improved crit, and divine might.

It has been suggested that EWP isn't a good feat for a centaur since they have so few. If you're taking fighter levels, it's less of an issue.

I know this may not be the "Best" weapon choice, but personally I have fallen in love with my Maul in a home game. (It's in complete warrior) It's two handed unless you take the exotic weapon proficiency feat to make it one handed. It does 1d10 => 2d8 lg creature and (X3 crit). To good news is you don't have to waste the feat to use it (unless you want to use it one handed). This is just my recomendation.

It's a melee weapon, so he is non-proficient or would need to spend a feat. Unlike your home game, he would require access to the weapon in LG.

Of the options you listed, I would suggest Great Scimitar and take at least 1 level of Exotic Weapon Master for 'uncanny blow'. At level 8 you would likely have a 24str without any magic and if you only put 6 points into Str at character start.

Great Falchion would be 3d6+10 for damage = 20.5 average damage (28 Max)

Great Scimitar would be 2d6+14 for damage = 21 average damage (26 Max)

28 Str (+2 Str item and 10 points in starting Str) would be

Great Falchion would be 3d6+13 for damage = 23.5 average damage (31Max)

Great Scimitar would be 2d6+18 for damage = 25 average damage (30 Max)

32 Str (+4 Str item and 16 points into starting Str) would be

Great Falchion would be 3d6+16 for damage = 26.5 average damage (34 Max)

Great Scimitar would be 2d6+22 for damage = 29 average damage (34 Max)

If you add in barbarian levels, it becomes more exadgerated.

I would probably lean towards a reach weapon, myself.

Another viable alternative if you went with the exotic weapon master is the ability that allows you to flurry with your exotic weapon and pick up an extra attack.

Remember however exotic weapon master requires focus in the weapon as well as proficiency and you must have both these feats the level prior to taking the exotic weapon master level.

One of our player's centaur character uses a lance. He pretty much always charges and does insane damage. He was doing this very effectively long before he gained proficiency.

Where does he find a huge mount to ride to get the double damage? Otherwise does he not just have a large two-handed weapon?

centaurs grow to large size after 6 monster levels

and being centaur do not need a mount to take mounted feats they jsut use them

According to Monster Manual Centaurs do double damage when charging with a lance. So far so good. However I have not seen anything that points to centaurs being able to use e.g. spirited charge without actually sitting on a mount though, and I am quite sure it is not allowed in Living Greyhawk. Since they are not mounted they have to use two hands for the lance too.

My LG centaur uses a lance (his only feat is 'Martial weapon proficiency - Lance'). At the moment he does a lot of damage when charging, and at lvl 4 (3 HD) I plan on getting power attack, bringing me to 2d8 + 32 damage on a successful charge with max power attack (2 handed, 1d8 + 10 str + 6 PA x 2).

I suppose they could just take the mounted feats, but I don't see how that would help them in the least, considering they only work when mounted.

I think the MM says that charging centaurs do double damage with lances, but RotW, the source book for centaur PCs, doesn't mention this. I don't remember if this was ever resolved.

I don't think it is resolved to 100%, so I would have to accept any judge telling me I don't get double damage I guess.

Might I ask where you are getting your information from? All the LG stuff I have read says you have to have all the qualifications to take a feat and to use the feat. All of the Mounted Combat feats are for use while mounted.

Now the MM does state that Centaurs do double damage with a Lance while charging. Many GMs do allow this as have I. I see that it is stated in a Core book so until the ruling comes along to clarify this, I see many GMs allowing it.

Clearly somewhere random if its not LG ... possibly read it sometime in something unusual like Savage Species. Doesnt really matter .. if they don't get the feats they don't get them.

From the Blight on Bright Sands Sourcebook, page 11: Centaurs are not mounted creatures, and PCs can't be used as mounts by other PCs. Looks to me like the "mounted" series of feats shoudln't work.

It has been resolved:

The LG centaurs are from Races of the Wild, which are not the same as MM centaurs. They are smaller, and don't count as mounted.

As such, they don't get free Mounted Combat, extra lance damage, or anything like that.

Has it been resolved? Could we get a reference for that? :)

I cannot see anywhere that the MM centaur would be counted as mounted, the only thing according to SRD is:
----------
A centaur employing a lance deals double damage when it charges, just as a rider on a mount does.
----------

I agree it isn't mentioned in either Bright sands, the Centaur AR, or RotW, but I still think that they are the same kind of creature as the MM centaurs.

its resolved because the bright sands sourcebook for LG specifically states huelenar centaurs "start at first level with the centaur monster class from Races of the Wild" and further states "centaurs are not mounted creatures" nor can PC centaurs be used as mounts by PC's

I agree that they do not count as mounted, but it does not really apply to the lance damage as I see it. Well, we can always argue in another thread instead? :)

Regarding the original question, I would suggest the Great Falchion since you get more out of them crits the more damage you do. Especially if you can get it keen. :) That is something I'm considering for my Centaur later on, since the charging lanes seem to be getting cramped when you're large.

Tunnel fighting is probably a good idea then too, so you don't get the -4 to AC and to-hit when squeezing.

There's no arguing to be done. The RotW progression does not say Centaurs get double damage with the lance, so they don't. You aren't playing a MM centaur.

It's the same reason Elves aren't covered in scales and gnomes can't shoot lasers from their eyes. Just because it doesn't say they aren't/can't doesn't mean they are/can.

Yeah, but, the MM doesn't say that elves are covered in scales and gnomes can shoot lasers from their eyes. And if I wanted to, I could probably have an elven archer shooting a bow in the same wierd way that is shown in the MM even though that's not in the PHB.
