| cetiken01-28-07, 01:40 PM | Well it seems to me that the latest fad in module writting is the Cadaver Collector. As such, I thought it'd be fun to talk about your favorite tactics (the latests adventurer fashion). Small people: Do not engage in meele! You will not like it. Wizards: Time to find those no SR spells. Glitterdust is your friend if you can convince the thing to fail a save. Archers: As always DR is not your friend. Its this latest fad that is making me consider buying a stack of Adamantium Arrows. After you've been spiked: stay put and pray that it forgets about you. Anyone else have other suggestions? |
| haferka01-28-07, 02:36 PM | Druid 3.. Extended Chilling Breeze.. ( i think thats the spell name)... its a core spell from Spell compendium.. 1d6 per round (+1d6 per round).. 2d6 rd 2, 3d6 rd 3... normally the spell lasts 3 rounds.. for 6d6 total damage (cold)... extended it lasts 6 rounds ... for 21d6 total damage (cold)... yikes... Cast that.. and go full defense, while your animal companion keeps it busy... BTW, ... I really want this spell to be restricted (or erratad.. it should deal damage similar to heat metal to keep it balanced.. curently.. it is not balanced with extend spell). |
| haferka01-28-07, 02:38 PM | This is not my tactic.. but I have seen it used VERY effectivly... Reach weapon fighter (any class).. High str & dex, Combat reflexes... Run into the middle of a group.. take your AO when they approach... kills low level encounters quickly.. Power attacking with a 2h reach weapon makes this MORE effective. |
| ShinAkuma201-28-07, 03:18 PM | That works great until the Cadaver Collector tramples right over you. You can either take your AoO, or get a save to not get crushed, but not both... Also, all your AoOs are kind of meaningless to anyone with Tumble (ie any Rogue or Monk worth his salt). |
| Arvagor01-28-07, 04:47 PM | Also, all your AoOs are kind of meaningless to anyone with Tumble (ie any Rogue or Monk worth his salt).Yeah, that's always fun to do with my rogue, esp. now that he can Take 10 on his Tumble checks (Thief Acrobat) -- Tumbling through 4 straight enemies , at full speed, can be fun! |
| JJeff01-28-07, 07:58 PM | Clarification: Spell that haferka is referring to is Creeping Cold Arvagor: Hmmm... 4 enemies, full speed, that's DC 25, 27, 29 and 31. With Take 10, that means you have at least a +21 modifier.... Cool.... |
| JohnduBois01-28-07, 09:13 PM | Druid 3.. Extended Chilling Breeze.. If so, I hope your Fortitude save is good, because that cold's going to creep right back to you if you use it on a cadaver collector. I've fought a couple of these. Our strategy was Inspire Recklessness/Power Attack and hope it ran out of hp before we did. I DM'd a party who ran into one of these today as well. After they asked me twice if I was running the correct APL (I was), they adopted a very good defensive strategy - Grease it, then run away. |
| trollbill01-28-07, 10:07 PM | Well it seems to me that the latest fad in module writting is the Cadaver Collector. Thank God! I was getting so tired of Living Spells. |
| Jay_Ibero_91101-28-07, 11:45 PM | Am I just lucky that I never ran into either a living spell or a cadaver collector? |
| JJeff01-29-07, 12:31 AM | I think it is a case of "not yet", Jay.... |
| Haro01-29-07, 12:42 AM | I'd like to dip my oar in by saying I appreciate the fact that LG has fads with regards to monsters and spells. Remember that when a cool new book comes out, it's likely that many authors around the world will simultaneously point at a spell or monster and make an 'oooh' sound. Meaning of course that a scenario or two released around the same time may just have the same monster or spell in it at one APL. Better than seeing yet another vampire boss fight at APL 4. At least it's new and challenging since players can't metagame its resistances or abilities. Joe |
| Sieylianna01-29-07, 07:52 AM | I DM'd a party who ran into one of these today as well. After they asked me twice if I was running the correct APL (I was), they adopted a very good defensive strategy - Grease it, then run away. We ran into two of these at APL 12 with a weak party which wanted to play APL 10, but didn't have a choice when we were assigned a 6th player. One was directed away by 2 walls of force to rampage the next town (DM said they weren't very intelligent) and we had a tough time with the remaining one. Ed |
| KarmaInferno01-29-07, 12:52 PM | I've run into a couple, didn't have a problem. Then again , I play a warmage with boots of flying. Orb spells are wonderful. Especially if you have a lot of meta-magic boosting available. =) -karma |
| Japangirl01-29-07, 03:10 PM | Cadaver Collectors . . . we used to glitterdust and then the rogue (me) would Golem Strike/full round attack it and pray that the blind construct would miss. Now I have a Ring of Freedom of Movement, so it's glitterdust (miss chance is still good), flank just in case, and Golem Strike. Now if only I could transfer some of that adamantine access from my wizard to my rogue . . . |

About the adamaintine arrows, what do you think Japangirl? |

Although I'm not Japangirl. Adamantine arrows are great, until someone gets spiked. Then you have a chance of hitting the spiked character. |

| trollbill01-29-07, 05:04 PM | Nah - IPS all the way :D. No archer should ever be without it... Except, of course, those archers with a BAB of less than 11. Unfortunately, Cadaver Collectors don't seem to pay attention to that little detail. |

Then they're not really Archers then ;) More Archers in training, or Baby Archers, or Apprentices ;) They'd be people that can use a bow :) |
| _m_01-29-07, 06:18 PM | Zombie Grey Renders. in 3 years of play, the silly things just keep showing up. |
| Jay_Ibero_91101-29-07, 06:19 PM | Although I'm not Japangirl. Adamantine arrows are great, until someone gets spiked. Then you have a chance of hitting the spiked character. I don't really think you'd have a chance of hitting your allies once they are spiked, because it says that once a creature is spiked, the Collector is no longer considered to be grappling, therefore if you target it, since it is not considered to be grappling at that point, you have no chance of hitting your allies... |

It also specifies the impaled victims are stuck on it's back, so just stick the the front and sides as an archer. |

I got access and then I got to play an 2-rounder at APL 16 and so got the money. Adamantine arrows are too expensive to be worth it. They require access and you're throwing away money at the rate of 5-6 arrows a round to kill the construct. Let someone else deal with it (hopefully someone can) and if not, you can at least tink away at it. |

You know I was at a con the other day, and a player was having his friend just use mending to repair the destroyed adamantine arrows he was using. Mending can't fix magic items, but works just fine on non-magic items of any material. The DM thought it was a little fishy, so we got a triad member ruling saying that while mending is insufficient, Make Whole will do the trick, and on a number of arrows equal to caster level...So as long as you have access to one set of Adamantine Arrows, you can spend 150gp on scrolls of make whole to repair 3 at a shot. |
| Gyro_LC01-29-07, 08:51 PM | Spell turrets seemed to keep cropping up in September 2006. |
| TheBlackFlail01-29-07, 11:22 PM | Enlarge Person works [small] wonders against Cadaver Collectors, they can't impale large critters. |
| Morgen01-30-07, 01:01 AM | We faught a Cadaver Collector in a particular mod. It wasn't too hard, I don't remember what we did to it. Think it got Evard's to keep it stuck, then cometfalled and pounced by a druid's kitty. It's got a nice miniature from the D&D minis set. Honestly though I've noticed a damn lot of Eberron creeping into LG. Kind of annoying since we don't HAVE WARFORGED IN GREYHAWK. |

| bhale18701-30-07, 08:03 AM | I thought it ws introduced in a dungeon or dragon magazine and then first source book was in MM 3. |
