So: What about funny times you have deliberately turned down a saving throw? I am sure this has happened a lot more often than people think hehehe... Once my Rogue was suggested to run around kissing succubusses, and I chose to fail the saving throw cos on principle, my rogue was up for it... Copped three negative levels till he was subdued and the Succubusses beaten off... |
| copper_wyrmling04-25-07, 07:14 PM | Well, as mentioned on the necromancer thread, my wild mage has kinda made a habit of it. At L2, she ran into a strange magical green mist. The rogue walked into the room, failed her Fort save, and got Enlarged. My sorcerer went, "Cool!" and ran in, took a deep breath, and relinquished her save. She also got Enlarged. She complained that was boring, and kept taking deep breaths and deliberately failing her saves. By the end of the encounter she was invisible, spiderclimbing, enlarged, had a breath weapon, and had been healed by the mist - there WERE bad options, the GM just kept rolling beneficial ones. She routinely relinquishes Will saves against magical dreams, because they tend to give interesting and valuable information. She does try to ensure that people with Magic Circle vs Evil are on watch while she's asleep. She hasn't quite grasped the idea that magic items might hurt her. Thus, she will try to activate random items to see what they'll do (she has +23 UMD at the moment), and she deliberately failed a Reflex save to pull away from a necromantic artifact because she wanted to see what would happen. (The result was... interesting.) It still astonishes me that Azrien has made it to L12 without a death, especially since she has Con 12 and walks around with AC 13. |
| Bold04-25-07, 10:17 PM | Several years ago I was playing a "Midnight Madness" game in a hotel room at a convention, but I was soooo tired that I kept dozing off during the investigative adventure. At one point we found a vial that we suspected was poison, so my dwarf fighter/barbarian took a swig to test it... prompting a Fort save. I easily nailed the save, and for the rest of the game my primary contribution was waking up, announcing my character was drinking more poison, making the Fort save, then falling back asleep. That's the opposite of "turning down a chance to make a saving throw", but it's the first thing which popped in my head. :) |
| _metz_04-25-07, 11:59 PM | Ooh this is something simaler - as Perrenders can attest, to failing a will save... Everytime there is an oppurtunity to go by ship or boat my pirate insists upon it... Usually works out as bad as failinga will save. - The full plated armoured clerics glare at me profusely... |

| amnuxoll04-26-07, 02:43 PM | On of my PCs is a coward who auto-fails saves vs. fear effects. That's going to get harder and harder to do now that he's 10th level... |
| Gallaway04-26-07, 07:40 PM | On of my PCs is a coward who auto-fails saves vs. fear effects. That's going to get harder and harder to do now that he's 10th level... Deliberately failing a symbol of fear might not be a healthy thing to do in some situations. |
| _metz_04-26-07, 08:30 PM | Ooh m! remember Armi and the Procan thunderbolt! 10d8 for a level 5 character... that'll learn her.... "Come get me you ztupid zea god!" *annoying french accent* |
| Nerax04-26-07, 09:16 PM | I was playing a mod at APL 8 (2-8 range)with my level 9 Arcane Heirophant and the party was chasing something...cannot say to much as the mod is still in play...it attacked with an SU or SP ability, which required a high Will save and I saw over half of the party go limp. It was a somewhat diplomatic type encounter so I tried (8 Cha) that route. No success. Next round he did it again...next party member goes down leaving only me and my Tiger. Ok, Tiger charge, don't kill(subdual attack)...missed on ALL 5 attacks(low rolls)! I am like holy crap! Ready Magic missle to disrupt. Next round again, Will save (he makes his Concentration check)...this time my tiger goes down. Double holy crap! Ok, no more mister nice guy...fireball off a scroll. He makes his save...dirty rotten (bleeping)... Next round again, Will save..... At this point the DM is looking at me astonished as I have made, by my high will save(+14) and good rolls, 4 DC 30 will saves! My Tiger had saved becuase of two natural 20's on his will save. This is about when I realized I might have to fail this save for things to progress....so on the 5th round I failed the save and then we continued on. I found out after the mod that if I had made the 5th and final save then I would have had to sit out for the rest of the mod....I guess the Mod writer didn't count on people actually making that high of a save that many times in a row. :P |
