Based on my understanding, a character can only begin play "excommunicated" from a religious affiliation unless that character is adventuring with another character who shares that affiliation (+1 affiliation score modifier). Every other affiliation score modifier is unavailable to a first level character, and the base score of 1/2 a character's level would put a first-level faithful cleric at affiliation score 0, which results in excommunication. So how does a character join a religious affiliation without suffering excommunication? Must they only play a pre-formed table with at least one other faithful member of their affiliation until they reach level 2? |

Seems odd that the Fharlanganites would throw you out for joining the Cartographer's Guild, or the Boccobites for you joining the Wizard's Guild, but there it is. |

If your prime focus is a secular organization, then until you have something major to bring to the organization, you obviously aren't that faithful, as you put other concerns ahead of serving the religion. This is an affiliation for the faithful, not the casual worshiper. If you are so focused on advancing your career in another organization, expect the religious groups to question your motivations and commitment. |
