I'm working up so that I can run Living Greyhawk games by the end of the year (I just started, but I've DM'ed before. But, I want to know the background stuff and get an idea for how the mods "work" by playing through them before committing to running anything).

Besides the Greyhawk Gazetteer (I'm borrowing a copy from someone), are there other publications/Web sites I should read through to learn enough background so if a PC asks me a question about the background that is common knowledge, I can answer it without stumbling?

Generally most of the relevant background for a mod is included at the beginning of the mod. If you are running a regional mod you may need to look for some other documents pertaining to that region however. For example we have a 'Players Guide to Zeif' document that covers alot(enough) of the history of Zeif for most purposes.

some modules are really deep rooted to long lost greyhawk canon sources, most of the time they provide enough information for the module, sometimes they don't.

you might want to join the yahoo lg-dm group at:

http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/LGDMs/

sometimes helpful especially with modules that have some "problematic" parts.

There are a few old books from AD&D 2nd Edition (I think so, anyways) such as the Marklands and other things like that. Sadly, they aren't in print, and those are only specific regions. I don't know if every other region got the same amount of attention that Furyondy, Highfolk, and Veluna got in respects to detail. There are a lot of Greyhawk flavor books out there, but you just need to make sure you have the time to look around for them- and be prepared to pay the price for those books. There's always the alternative that you can borrow them from some people in the region- which is what I do, since I'm fortunate enough to have a friend who possesses a lot of old D&D flavor texts.
