| DaddyDik09-26-06, 11:50 PM | I need a lvl 8-10 character for LG. All my buddies started early and i want to play at their level with em. If anyone has a character of that level....with AR documentation maybe we can make a deal for D&D materials or other $tuff. Please use PM with char description.... Thankx! |
| Puggle Halfwine09-26-06, 11:56 PM | Although in 30 seconds I couldn't find anything in the LGCS specifically prohibiting this, it is my understanding that characters cannot be traded. |
| kenobi6509-26-06, 11:59 PM | Sooooo not legal. This ain't Warcraft. LGCS, p. 14: "Adventure records are linked to both the character and player whose names appear in the certification field. A character cannot be played by anyone other than the player named." |
| DaddyDik09-27-06, 12:00 AM | I read the LGCS aswell and its not stated that they cant. Im actually surprise no one put one on eBay.... |

As well as it being forbidden, for 8-10 level character you easily need over a years worth of playing (assuming you manage to use all 52TUs). How much could some one demand from a years 'work'? Quite a lot i'd say. Edit - to Kenobi: Well said about Warcraft. LG is one of those rare places where money cannot buy instant gratification. Sampo Haarlaa Naerie Triad |

| clik_ml09-27-06, 05:24 AM | Often the case is that one has more than a couple LG characters in order to make tables at conventions and play with buddies. You might see if you can convince your buddies to start new secondary characters so you can play together (I'm surprised they haven't offered yet, or no-no-no'd your notion of buying a character). |

Yes, that is quite odd... |
| Necrochaos09-27-06, 11:15 AM | I believe the spirit of the rules would agree that characters should not be sold. Although it is not in bold print, it is strongly implyed that this should not happens. It does bother me in the LG campaign that people try to push the lines so hard. "If it's not in print, than it can be done". The writers of the LGCS didn't think of everything. As always, we should abide by the spirit of the rules instead of interpretting the text to suit our own needs. This is just my opnion, and I expect to hear angry feedback about this post. |
| solbergb09-27-06, 01:15 PM | Ugh....the last person I want at a high level table is someone who didn't play the character for the last few years. He's sure to underperform. I'm very glad the rule is in place, especially having seen how badly it works out in MMORPG's when folks buy accounts. There is no substitute for experience with a character at the table. This is true even if you're very good at the game. |
| Mommy was an Orc09-27-06, 01:54 PM | It is more than just implied: Adventure records are linked to both the character and player whose names appear in the certification field. A character cannot be played by anyone other than the player named. All certificates in the LIVING GREYHAWK campaign are the property of Wizards of the Coast and must be returned to the campaign staff or their representatives upon request. They have zero cash value (US $0.00) and cannot be sold for cash or other real-world considerations. Sale of any LIVING GREYHAWK campaign certificate, or trade contrary to the certificate trading rules, is penalized by sanctions imposed by the campaign staff, up to and including banning all offending parties from future RPGA events. The duration of that ban is decided by the campaign staff. I believe the spirit of the rules would agree that characters should not be sold. Although it is not in bold print, it is strongly implyed that this should not happens. |
| gog09-28-06, 10:36 AM | Sure thing man, I've got a 14th level cleric I'll sell you. Let's see he's on AR 70 something, and he was played through year one so well throw in oh 12 more AR's. Now that's 4 hours for each and we'll say a billing rate of 30 or so bucks. So $2500 sounds about right. Oh wait some of that includes convention trips Gencon, WF, etc, so throw in another couple grand, ah heck let's just make it a round five grand. :D |

No your 100% right. LG isn't a home game. A home game DM can do what ever he wants with the PC. Mike |

This wins the "stupidest thread of the year" award. I really wish this guy would sign his real name and RPGA number so his Triad would audit him. |

Except that he had no characters and hadn't played LG before, and that was the whole reason for the misconception on how things worked. What would one audit, his non-existent characters sheets and ARs? An empty heroforge spreadsheet? |

Yeah, it sounds like this is more a case of a new player having a misconception, and making a foolish post here as a result, than anything else. |
| duhtroll09-29-06, 09:34 PM | Especially considering people have sold living campaign characters before many times. Give the guy a break. Everyone playing LG has made a stupid assumption at some point. I believe mine was that Mona (way back when) was passing on the mantle of leadership to someone with a slight modicum of competence. :P |
| clannagh10-01-06, 11:39 PM | Start a new character, go to a conference play 6 or 7 games straight and get to level 3 or so. Then get your high level mates to lend your PC some gear (perfectly legal if you give it back at the end of each game) and play up to APL 8 or 10. If your careful you will survive, and even at half xp/gold will catch up fairly quickly. |

If your careful you will survive, and even at half xp/gold will catch up fairly quickly. Let's run the numbers (assuming the party completes every mod), lets say he plays APL 10 until level 8, where he would start getting full XP for APL 8. He could get to level 8 (28K XP) in 13 mods (29.9K). His friends who just got to level 8 when he started would be level 13 (89.7K) by then. So at that point they play at APL 14, he plays 2 mods bringing him to level 9 (43.1 K), his friends are at level 15 (116.1). At that point if his friends play at APL 12 or 14 they will hit retirement (or high-level mods) after the next mod. So they could play 16 mods together, never closer than 5 levels to one another. Sounds like a bad deal. Or his friends (my friends want to play with me) could start new LG PCs and play 16 mods and get to about level 5 together and still have long careers ahead or play in a D&D campaign where everyone is teh same level (approximately) |

An APL 10 mod gives 1350 XP / round. Taking half XP, you're getting 675 XP / round (just like if you were playing APL 4, in fact). 28000/675 is approx 42 mods, not 13. (Well, unless they're playing nothing but two-round Core specials.) XP scales linearly with APL: you level faster by playing at an appropriate tier. However, at APL 10 the gold / XP ratio almost doubles, so you get more gold for your level if you play up a lot, and of course, the access is better. Still, it's usually more fun to play at a level where everyone can make a strong contribution to the party. |
