Hey guys,

Quick question. What's LG's interpretation on the 'Mount' ability of the Halfling Outrider class? It's poorly worded in a few areas. Is the mount replaced when it is killed? Is it a gift or is it on loan?

Cheers,

Dave.

I have seen no specific ruling on this so I would assume it works like other classes that come with animals, in that it is replaced when killed. It is a class ability after all. Since it stacks with animal companion levels and doesn't list any familiar type penalties I would say it has to work that way.

Also, if your region has the International Halfling Society you can join it as a rider and get all the replacement doggies you want, you don't even have to be an outrider.

Uhh- really?

I'm a member of the International Halflings Society. They give you a mount when one is killed?

I'll have to re-read that cert...

You have to upgrade to the "rider" tier, not just the "friend" or "companion" level.

You two might want too confirm that you're talking about the same International Halfing Society metaorg. perrenland's version might be different:)

Yeah, Perrenland's version is different.

Since we are on the topic of Perrenland and mounts, could any Perrenders tell if their regionals usually present opportunities to use mounts and engage in mounted combat.

How bout Iuz BS meta-regionals?

Thanks.

I've managed to get good use out of my PC's mounts in both Perrender Regionals and Iuz. Sure there have been a few dungeon bashes where horses (and Centuars) won't work, likewise city advetures can be a bit difficult and the interplaner travel isn't to healthy.

Overall mounted combat is definitely a good option especially if the action takes place on the plains of the Feronvold or by the shores of Lake Quag. I bought a Bronze Griffen for one of PCs and use that alot.

The only real complaints I've heard from young Emporor Dave about mounted combat in the Perrenland concern the inablity of other players to stay out of his charge lines.

My only tip is to remember that sometimes your PC will have to fight on foot - oh and always have a back mount, Blasphamy may not do much to your PC but will generally toast your PC's horse.

John's totally correct here. As a Perrenland mounted character, I actually have a fair few opportunities to charge as long as my fellow PC's understand my role. Not that I mind terribly, but I am most effective when presented with a beautiful 5ft charge line straight to a low AC, high HP monster. Basically, on average, you can be effective in five out of six modules you play, probably more. The ones you arn't in are, of course, memorable.

Also, another note; don't play up. I do frequently, but you shouldn't. As a mounted character you essentially want to kill whatever it is you're charging in one hit- power attack lets you do that, but only for things at your APL. If they're too strong, your charge will miss or you won't kill them (or seriously wound them for someone else to pick off). Then they'll full attack you, your AC will be low, and you will be screwed. Especially if, like myself, you rage and charge. Especially if you're a small character and they use their last attack to grapple you. Very bad news.

However, if you are planning a mounted character I would STRONGLY advise in the STRONGEST possible terms that you keep your character at full BAB and take Power Attack. This is so that when you're exploring areas where your mount cannot go (some modules take them without you having any choice in the matter) you can pick up a greatsword and still do a fair amount of damage. Sure, you don't have weapon focus/specialization, but you're still pretty damn effective because of Power Attack.

And yes. Blasphamy is evil.

Umm wouldn't Ride-By-Attack take care of this?

EVERY charger has ride by attack (prerequisite for spirited charge), but you often just cannot end up past your opponent.

Also, if at all possible I suggest mounted characters should either be size small (to use dogs). Save that one might consider being a beastmaster, which at the first beastmaster level can have a dire bat to ride (mind that 180 weight limit for flight on a normal dire bat, human and dwarven males need not apply). The 4th level of beastmaster unlocks a whole bunch of rideable animal companions that can deal with stairs.

Tunnel riding is also very helpful for medium sized mounted characters as it negates squeezing penalties for mounts. But it has the (mostly worthless), tunnel fighting prereq, which means it is only a choice for truly dedicated mounted characters.

Ride-By Attack is (as discussed in another thread) almost completely useless. Skip Williams, in his "All About Mounted Combat" article claimed that the FAQ allows one direction change after a charge; I have not found ANYTHING like that anywhere. If I did, I would be one very happy halfling.
