Hey buddy, my rhino wants to know something! [Archive] - Wizards Community

So just as an amusing aside, I was running a game and the party decided they had to make a gather information roll (which they did). They ran in circles trying to decide who would do it and to get the ball rolling I reminded them they could all roll and just take the highest; they could aid but I wanted them to declare they were aiding before they rolled. Everyone started declaring aids to the primary information gatherer and rolling. After the dice cleared, it was realized that everyone had aided but no one had actually made the primary check. Just to keep things moving I told them they all aided the rhino animal companion; they agreed and the game progressed.

Poor NPC.
"You're standing in the crowd and you're suddenly nudged by something behind you. You turn around and there's a rhino in mithril full plate looking at you. The gnome riding the rhino says, 'Hey buddy, my rhino wants to know something!' A rich looking human adds in, 'Don't worry, he just wants to know some local rumors.' You hear a bodiless voice to your left, 'If he likes your information, you won't end up impaled on his horn.' How much information would you like to give the nice rhino?"

LOL

Hmmm, reminds me of something back before I rebuilt my druid.

The party was fighting some little annoying flying things, who decided to fly away from the charging criticling rhino animal companion and its equally nasty wildshaped rhino druid.
The arcanists in the party decided it would be fun to cast fly on the two rhinos.
The mental picture of this scene was increased in its hilarity when the Dakon Green Star Adapt cohort climbed a tree and launched itself at one of the creatures.
Between flying rhinos and green gorilla's, it was the most unusual combats I've ever seen.

I've had my (then) dire wolverine animal companion was interrogated by a gnomish sheriff...Ever try to roleplay the thoughts of an Int 2 animal? Not an easy thing to do...

Our (use to be) local Senior DM, did a good job role playing a badger that developed affections for my druid when she was wildshaped once.
She was tracked by it for ages before it finally got the idea it wouldn't work, being different species and all.
Still... Was funny.

I recently had something similar to Cheeky_ktty's. It involves Red Hand, so there will be spoilers, of course.

Going up against one of the last bad guys in part two, my Dire Tortoise is currently Large Sized due to Rotanna's Sizing Collar. It also has Jaws of the Moray, Nature's Favor, and Fly on it. In the near final room when the creature in question pops out, I dismiss the "Reduce Animal" allowing my tank to grow to huge (one size category larger than the creature in question). THe creature panics, gets grappled, breaks the grapple, and shoots through the roof (into a haboob that was ongoing overhead).

My character's brother runs up to the Tortoise, and fast mounts. I fast mount, and the turtle shoots up after the creature. The images in all our heads was just one of utter amazement...a tortoise flying after the creature who is now scared to death cause something bigger than it can not only hit it, but grab hold of it, and hold on for dear life....oh and it has way more hitpoints than it.

In the end it got away (if only cause the Fly spell doesn't allow you to "run", only double move), but it was great.

Nice one Reska.
Add to my previous post the fact that the Dakon actually tried to grapple the flying creature (and I think it did-long time ago) and you've got quite an amusing display.

It helps when you combine Jaws of the Moray (auto-grapple and auto-damage) with a +16 to hit (+18 with Nature's Favor) and a 16,000 lbs. turtle...Most things aren't getting away...and tend to be scared even if they are supposed to be the big bad guys.

Just a minor point: you can't fast mount a creature more than one size bigger than you. I'm familiar with this rule because my main is a halfling druid riding a tiger... it's just easier to stay on ALL the time...

Got a reference for that?

Actually Fel was swinging his greataxe after jumping and he was enlarged, raging and buffed...

Then after he knocked the beastie unconscious Alvin hit it with a maximized born of three thunders lightning bolt - fell down to the ground and just before it hit Sarian Sneak attack critical hit it with a Bow...

Stupid tiny shadow pixie things.

(On a side not its also funny when you climb up an infected treant thinking it is a tree and it beats the #### out of you leaving you unconscious hanging from its branches)

I dont recal the Feat.. but there exists a way to "Climb onboard" a Creature 1 or more sized larger than you with a climb check.. (I believe its opposed by there grapple check).. but you could just have the mount NOT oppose the roll.

Yeah, but that doesn't help here. The point is you can't fast mount, which is a free action. You can still use a move action to mount, and the climb aboard function of the Giantbane tactical feat only works on foes.

Either way, I won't be fast-mounting the turtle anymore...it's over and done with, and I'll just remember that I can't do that now.

Just make sure it's been reduced and things are fine

Well. My dire eagle riding halfling will have to rethink a few things!

Yeah, but it's a standard action to activate the Collar, not to mention he gets 2d8 +12 damage as Huge.

a decent DM will allow Giantbane to work.. BUT.. you are "climbing" on the mount as a free action..

- All climbing penalties would apply... (loose dex, shield.. loose at least 1 hand to hold on..., etc.. see PH)..

-This would allow you to spend a move action after that to get into a "mounted" possition.

The other commonly missed rule in this arena is that fast mount/dismount uses the armor check penalty.

Anyone know where the rules about melee combat from a mount more than one size catagory larger than yourself are? I seem to recall something about needing a reach weapon. A section from the SRD would be handy, I've lent my PHB out to a new player so I can't look it up in there at the moment.

Who doesn't tell massive 6000 lbs animals all their local knowledge and secrets? Our animal companions and familiars (stat boost slaves) know everything about characters and are probably the ones alerting everyone involved in the surprise attack that we're coming. :D

I dont have a reference.. but from memory.. you are still considered to take the same space as the mount..

so you threaten your normal 5' around the mount.. or 10' with a reach weapon...

A side effect of this is that with a reach weapon (lance) you now threaten every space 5' and 10' away.. However.. the 5' spaces would get cover from the mount.. since you would have to be further back on the mount and "Reach" through its space.

Haf,
I'm not sure about that cover issue for squares 5' away.
Say my PC is on a huge mount. Thus, I occupy all nine of those cubes in a three-dimensional space.
I'm squareing off with a lance against something that's medium-sized right in "front" of me.

Couldn't I just say I'm in the center front square, 10 feet up?
No cover provided by the mount from there. Is there?

Might not work with a Large mount, though...

This isn't correct. You occupy all of the spaces, and cannot choose which one you're "in." You threaten the donut and don't threaten the 5' ring around the mount. If you're on huge mount, you same thing.

Luckily, my turtle gets to act in said surprise attack, thus negating at least SOME of the surprise.

Badguy 1: Oh look, lots of noise, lets ambush them.
Badguy 2: Righteo!
Both badguys jump out: HA HA!
Turtle looks up and chomps one of them.
Badguy 1: Tarnation! They have a turtle that has a higher initiative count than we do! Run away!

Really? I thought he tried to grapple it... Oh well, it was a while ago.
Shadow pixies? They were grigs. Are grigs pixies? I think they're classed as fey. Fey are pixies aren't they?

they were small annoying fey with wings. therefore I group them as annoying pixie things.

Fey bug me. Mainly cos I know a few girls who really should have fey as their type instead of human...
