I've come to realize that the greatest threat to wizards, sorcerers, anything with a low strength score, is a greater shadow. I've seen two wizards fall to these monstrousities in my history of playing LG, and with a fledingling wizard of my own now rising thru the APL's, I'd like to know what steps to take to protect him. What spells to take, what tactics to use. Or are these horrible creatures just the end all for all min maxed wizards?

Command Undead. I think they get a save but you should should be able to snag them.

Transdimensional Web. Incorporial Undead don't have a strength score, so if they fail their Reflex save, they are stuck.

Mage Armor and Shield will greatly increase you AC against them, since they have low attack bonus...Protection from Evil can Help too...Magic Missle for killing them before they take you out...Command Undead is handy for nerfing one of them. Mirror Image and other similar spells a good general defenses too. 5 CL7 magic missiles can take out a greater shadow on average...

Also note that ghosts with a draining touch can SELECT which ability score to hit each time they attack. This is a problem for any class with a dump stat.

well there's always the plan to take a maxed out Radiant Servant of Pelor/Sacred Exorcist (complete with Consecrated Presence) combo with Phylactery of Turning, Glory Domain, obscene CHA score, Heighten Turning and the "Holy Flood" card..... it has certainly worked for me... LOL:P :D

Force spells and/or play with good BDFs with ghost touch weapons. :)

One force spell that people overlook is Resillent Sphere. This is good for either trapping a shadow or protecting yourself. Another good tactic - if you are outside - is Mass Fly. Fly up into the air to prevent the Greater Shadows from Spring Attacking back into the floor or walls.

At higher levels, an Antimagic Field causes incorporeal undead to wink out. Ghost Trap removes incorporealness and so does a ghost net for 1 incorporeal. Death Ward (and death ward armor - can put on Thistledown padded) are also good for negating the drain ability.

I have seen death warded bracers of armor. Far better than a measly +1, if you ask me.

All of the above tricks are good ones. Also, you can bring the fight to them with spells like plane shift. Send your fighter to the ethereal, and watch the tide of battle change.

And a scroll of bull's strength is a good item to have here....

Shadows don't exist on the ethereal afaik, only ghosts :(

That would be called Turning on the Lights. Gets rid of all the dark corners. Also reveals alot of dust too...

The ghost still has to figure out what your dump stat is, and you really have no way of determining someone's ability scores just by looking at them, though you can probably guess what their HIGH scores are by the actions they take...
