I was killed a few days ago during a slot zero by this creature. I've never encountered it before, but I was amazed that it violates the new haste rulings. Basically, this creature is from Monster Manual 2, which hasn't been upgraded yet, and has the natural ability to scribe runes on his body that contain spells from it's daily allotment. Then, during battle, it can cast those spells on the runes as a free action. It's a CR 9 creature that casts as a 12th level sorcerer. I was just appalled at the clear violation of the spirit of the rules when it comes to haste. If it had the quicken spell feat and the runes let it cast spells prepared with the quicken feat (since sorcerers can't use the quicken spell feat to begin with) I could understand that. I guess I'm mad because a module writer clearly picked this creature because it's natural ability violates the new rules.

A lot of creatures have 'special abilities' that don't follow the normal rules. That's what makes them 'special abilities.' That said, I don't see in your description where the spell 'haste' enters into it. You describe his 'free action' spellcasting as a natural ability, and not a result of having haste cast upon him.

Now if the judge had haste on the creature and it was casting 3 or 4 spells a round... then yes there is a BIG problem... but otherwise the creature had to give up spell slots to put the tats on his body to get what is about equal too quicken spell feat...

True, but then that's not a problem with the creature (as the original poster suggested), but rather a problem with the judge.

I at least hope that the creature was limited to one "free action" spell a round...

Although not specifically mentioned in the monster description, this seems in the spirit of the rules and would agree with the new quickened spell rules (and the Immoth would get the benefit of not having to cast it 4 levels higher). Then the Immoth could cast another normal spell as a standard action in the same round.

I'd also take it that these "ice runes" tie up the applicable spell slots until discharged. Otherwise, the "ice runes" would be vastly abusable free-action scrolls.
