so I've Signed up to go to a Con here in UTah in Sepember where I'll be involved in an Interactive and a mini adventure

now my question is mostly fo0r those who have played year 5 interactives and mini's so that I can actually get some decent information (since basically the time has passed on the NDA about them)

Are they Worth it ... is my main question .... I've already paid the 40 Registration so I am going ... but again ... are the AR's from Minis and interactives that much better than the ones from Normal Year 6 / 7 mods .... any example from year 5 Mini's / interactives would be appreciated

You do realize that is like asking whether or not a random core adventure is worth it? Each and every interactive is different from the others. The gold and xp compared to the TU cost though is lower. I have seen people complain loudly about them, and I have seen people think them to be the highlights of the year. Your best bet is to actually talk with people who played interactives in that region recently and see what kind of interactive this is (in general you have LARP, battle interactive and series of mini adventures) and what people think of them. Remember, interactives usually are only run on one convention and they never follow the 2 year retirement schedule of regular adventures.

If you are only interested in maximizing your Xp and gp per TU, then they are not "worth it." Otherwise, it is as Madfox11 says. Some people think interactives are the best part of Living Greyhawk: the chance to play something probably unique. So much depends on the premise and the execution of the interactive.

It's all in the interactive.
You don't always get the chance to see Scant blown up... :)

Yeah. Now imagine how i felt when they said I couldn't go set fire to the temple of Zilchus just because we'd finished our mission early... :weep:

That was a very very dangerous interactive! We got so lucky to get out as well as we did (although the table setup really helped). :D Cheers to the spiked chain wielding bard(?), Sancho Panza.

Sounds like you're talking about Mountain Con.

I live in that area and I'm planning on assisting with the Judging for many of the tables there and likely for that interactive event. The last I heard about it (mind this was months ago) our local triad member was going to write the interactive personally. I don't have any other information to share, and I doubt that having him come here would do much good -- who would say 'yeah I'm writing a dumb mod'? I know the guy, so bias makes me think it'll be good. :)

I'll let him know about the thread anyway in case he wants to say something.

We're making a real push to get some quality Living Greyhawk play organized at Mountain Con this year, so we hope you'll enjoy it!

Note: Please ignore the current LG offerings posted on Mountain Con's website. They were posted by someone who hasn't been significantly involved in LG for over a year, and we're trying to get it changed/updated to something worth going to. Why they chose to post all year 6 regionals is beyond me. It's definitely not what we're going to be doing. *sigh*

Well, this is a gross generalization (as someone else said, it varies a lot, but here goes):

Quality of Writing: Over-all, the same as other mods. Which is to say that sometimes you get wonderful interactives with spectacular writing that make you wish you could elevate the author to godhood. And sometimes you get ones that make you want to track them down and put a brick through their car window.

Quality of Roleplay: In my experience, Interactives are far and above better than most mods for this. They also will give you a chance to affect the direction that the region (and possibly even larger areas) go, more-so than other mods do.

GP and XP: Here, Interactives are worse. A 2 round interactive will offer the same GP and XP as a 1 round mod of the same APL, and will usually be about as challenging as a normal mod at the next higher APL.

Access: From both what I've seen personally, and reports from others, item access and favors from interactives are, on average, about on par with other mods. However, the standard deviation is far greater.

I don't know how the interactives are in the Utah region, but I've been in some awesome ones in the Highfolk Area in the past (read: screwing up elven politics is fun) and the Skyroad Rally (think D&D + magic highway+wacky races) in verbobonc was like the greatest thing ever

Unfortunately not. I haven't been involved in the scenario selection process, so I shouldn't discuss it beyond saying that the currently shown offerings are not it. I only know that much because I saw it myself and pestered our local Triad member about the matter since it was so awful. We'll have the real offerings up as soon as we can.

The best part about interactives is that they have an impact on the local region. What happens at the interactive is what officially happens for plot.

main reason I'm asking is I had planned to just go up for saturday ... (mini and inter) if I need to make money available for more than 1 day (hotel or whatever) then more notice the better

Regions handle interactives and minis differently. In Nyrond interactives tend to be tied tightly to plots, particularly if running right after a mini or regional. In some cases, you have to play both in order to play either. In some cases, the interactive can flesh out what's happening out of the main plot, but is associated. Battle interactives are very different in flavor from LARP type interactives.

In year 7, Nyrond mini mods provide item access, using the 4/year access from the interactive budget. Both interactives and minis can be played at cons only, and the interactive is 1 time only. The Nyrond interactives in year 7 are not granting access; this could, of course, change if not enough minis are written. The idea is that this is spreading the access wider than when at 1-off interactives.

Nyrond mini mods are full threat for the APL, but deliver 1/2 GP/XP. The joke "double the risk, half the reward" is mistakenly taken by some to be a design goal. They can get very close to full regional mods in terms of content, although usually without the complexity. This is different from some regions where they are either light on threat level, combat, or both. They often advance plots; when this is the case, you can't play the entire story arc without playing them.

The minis have a mixed blessing. Given the length of current Nyrond regionals, they can be very difficult to fit in a four hour slot. The minis are better in this regard. Stuffing a Nyrond regional into four hours may feel like you didn't get an emersive experience, whereas the minis feel more complete in a constrained time frame to me.

I love Interactives almost as much as I love Britt. That's saying a lot.
