| Gwumph11-21-06, 09:59 PM | I have got to make a big decision on my weapon. A Lance Do I hold out for Ironwood acess or go for the Starmetal. I have Starmetal access but thats alot of money to drop just to buy a new weapon later on. So has anyone seen Ironwood access in either a Core or Perrenland Mod. (i know there are a tonne of perrenlanders on this forum) I don't need to know name, just if there is current legal mod that grants favor/access to ironwood. Cheers Gwumph p.s. Would the starmetal +1D6 to outsiders be doubled if charging with my lance? |
| Jay_Ibero_91111-21-06, 10:30 PM | Why so eager for ironwood access? And as far as the extra damage from starmetal, I don't think it would be, as you never multiply extra dice, only base damage dice and any numeric damage... |
| _m_11-21-06, 10:45 PM | Why so eager for ironwood access? And as far as the extra damage from starmetal, I don't think it would be, as you never multiply extra dice, only base damage dice and any numeric damage... yeah, lances are abbout the only weapon that +2 is better than +d* enhancement. |
| Gwumph11-21-06, 11:30 PM | Thats what I thought, But I could hope!! As for why so eager Ironwood access. I saved our druids life the other day and he has agreed to memorize and cast brambles every mod we adventure together. At 5th lv. that equals an extra 15 points per charge. (Raising my minimum damage from 42 points to 57 points per hit) So as you can see getting and Ironwood masterwork lance would be uber awesome!!! Anyone???? has Anyone ever seen a favor that allows for Ironwood weapons?? Please:bow: Gwumph |
| UMiskatonic11-21-06, 11:41 PM | Couldn't you use a lance made of normal, everyday wood? You've already got access to a +1 version of that. |
| _m_11-21-06, 11:45 PM | especially given that lances were, in fact, made of wood. incidentally, if you rummage around a bit, theres a 200ish post long thread on this exact topic that died about a week and a half ago. |
| Gwumph11-21-06, 11:56 PM | Read that post The agreement was that the "striking surface" of the lance needs to be wood, and a normal lance uses steel. If I had a lance made entirely form wood then it wouldn't do any damage, it would just be like a practice lance. So I need to get the Steel head at the end of lance made from ironwood for the brambles spell to work properly. |

[Edit] it has occoured to me that you may be implying that without a metal tip, it would do no damage, in which case, i may have over-reacted. however, it would still do MASSIVE damage with no metal tip. a sharpened stake, 10 feet long, sharpened, as thick as your fist, going through someones chest... would HURT THEM. metal or not, a shapened object being rammed with massive force into some part of your anatomy is not going to tickle. |
| clannagh11-22-06, 12:28 AM | Personally I tend to ignore threads discussing D&D weapons based on "real" medieval weapons because: - the participants with rare exceptions get most of their facts from movies - D&D has only very spurious connections with reality, take hitpoints for example, how does killing lots of stuff make you somehow immune (after 20 or so levels) to death when falling out of a 10 storey window ? From a game point of view, email your triad first and get a ruling as to whether you actually need the ironwood equivalent or can use a normal lance ... and if you do needironwood request a special mission to give you access to it. |
| Britt11-22-06, 12:49 AM | Special missions cannot give access to items. |
| jstorrie11-22-06, 03:39 PM | Lances are simply not 'wooden items' by RAW so you would need Ironwood access to get a Brambled/Spiked lance going. I wouldn't spend the extra on a starmetal lance, though. Cold iron is fine for a lance, you're going to be overcoming damage resistance with sheer force when you charge anyway. Save the starmetal cash for your on-foot weapon. |
| UMiskatonic11-22-06, 04:12 PM | Jstorrie, Where did you find a reference that says 'lances are not wooden items'? I looked, and must have missed it. Picture in the PHB looks wooden to me. Lances do damage because they concentrate the kinetic energy of a galloping horse + rider + armor into a 3-inch square. Wood or otherwise. |

| Gwumph11-22-06, 10:01 PM | Well m (notice small caps) The Perrenland Triad has spoken "In Perrenland, the lance has a *metal* tip (so is unable to be used by druids - even with proficiency). As a Perrender, you would follow this premise wherever you travelled. Regards, Bruce Paris Perrenland Triad Representative Cairns, Australia " As such back to the orginal question!! Has anyone everseen Ironwood access for weapons! Cheers Gwumph |
| _m_11-22-06, 10:38 PM | Well m (notice small caps) YAY! well done. :cheer: as for the rest of the post, yup, that basically shuts me up. and nope, in 100+ AR's ive never once seen ironwood anything. |
| RedKnightofKet11-22-06, 10:57 PM | There is no restriction in 3.5 against druids using metal weapons. They can use a scimitar, among others (trust me, I'm from Ket - scimitars are GREAT druid weapons... not that my druid ever uses weapons, but whatever). Just no funky spells on said lance, and either multi-classing or weapon proficiency in lance is required. | clannagh11-22-06, 11:27 PM | The whole 3.0 versus 3.5 druids and metal thing has caused a few problems before. I know of one poster who started and continued a 3 month argument about animal companians wearing metal barding based pretty much on his 3.0 understanding of druids and his limited knowledge of the way they had changed in 3.5. Metal is not as much an anathema to druids as it once was. |
| _m_11-22-06, 11:41 PM | dosent blood have iron in it? thatd be kind of a downer if they had to get rid of that. but yeah, they can use metal weapons. though if the lance tips metal, then no brambly goodness on it i guess. |
| Gwumph11-23-06, 12:09 AM | Waaahh:weep: I want my brambly goodness, really really want it. D@mn!!! Well that leads to another question. What should I magic my lance with?? Puggle any suggestions (since I know u are "The" mounted character for Perrenland) But I must warn you, Gwumph is hard on Puggles heels. LOL |
| UMiskatonic11-23-06, 10:33 AM | Umm, greater magic weapon, flame of faith, bull strength, magic weapon, sonic weapon, heroism, divine favor should all work, and that's not a complete list. The good side is that lances can't be both ways. If they are made out of a significant amount of metal, then you can have a silver lance, a cold iron lance, etc. If the judge rules that 'lances are mostly wood', then say OK. And cast brambles. Rhino's rush is good if you can get access. If you cast enlarge person yourself, I do believe you can share it with your special mount and you'll both move up a size. |

| Cynric11-23-06, 06:20 PM | Which if you are a druid, it is. The sidebar says any spell cast by you can be shared. It does not metion divine only. Ok so you need some wizard levels but arcane hierophants then get an effective animal growth earlier than a pure druid. |

| Cynric11-23-06, 07:40 PM | If it is your animal companion it will, providing you cast it. The sidebar says any spell you cast can effect you companion as well. It says nothing about divine or arcane. From memory, it only states that it must have certain targets, and I do not beleive type is one of them. |

| Cynric11-23-06, 08:01 PM | I beleive so. The exact wording is the important thing and I do not have my PHB with me now, so go and have agood look at it under the animal companion sidebar. |

Puggle any suggestions (since I know u are "The" mounted character for Perrenland) But I must warn you, Gwumph is hard on Puggles heels. LOL Haha! Well, I welcome the chance to play together. Two mounted characters makes things... interesting! In my opinion, you should magic your lance with magic; a +4 lance does more damage and has a better chance to hit than a +1 frost, flaming, acidic lance because your d6's don't multiply. The average roll for a d6 is 3.5, but with spirited charge each "+1" you add to your lance adds a total of +3 to your damage roll; however, you're also gaining +3 to your to-hit, which effectively means +3 more power attack. If you two-hand your lance, every point of power attack you have gives you +6 extra damage; so a +4 lance does an extra 27 damage, while a +1 frost, flaming, acidic lance only does an extra 19.5... and your +4 lance will work all the time and not be subject to energy resistance, plus have a lot more hardness/hit points if it get sundered. Plus access is easier to come by (IMHO). All around a better choice. As for special materials, to be honest, with the sheer amount of damage a charging character does in a single hit I've rarely had a problem with Damage Reduction. DR 5 or even DR 10 really doesn't matter much when you're doing 80+ damage a hit. Still, if you've got the money to burn, do it... in that case I'd recommend starmetal for just the little extra damage, or ironwood if you definately play with a druid all the time (who'll cast that spell for you). |

| Japangirl11-26-06, 05:58 PM | The purpose of thinaun is to perma-kill NPCs, not make your rez costs cheaper. |
| Britt11-26-06, 06:02 PM | If you die 3 or 4 times (I forget the break point), it actually saves money! |
| _m_11-26-06, 06:03 PM | The purpose of thinaun is to perma-kill NPCs, not make your rez costs cheaper. yeah, i know what its MEANT to do, but really, how often have you had trouble making an npc permenantly dead? in all the games ive played, not once has one of the npcs needed to be thinuan perma-slayed. |
| Japangirl11-26-06, 06:08 PM | Oh lots of trouble perma-killing certain NPCs not to be named. They must be slain at interactives in anti-magic fields or with thinaun to ensure their death. Triads using Crafted Contingencies is sooooo cheating! |

I don't think we can do that. Not to mention they have a deity looking out for them who *can* and probably would find them and let them back out of the imprisonment. |

| Japangirl11-26-06, 06:21 PM | Haha. But I'm sure they have a contingencied Break Enchantment for if they get, umm, altered in the way the madhouse messes with people, not to mention the saves on those guys are fairly absurd and they probably wouldn't even get affected. And if they did get affected, they'd have a crafted contingency to greater teleport themselves home where someone could fix it. And it only takes a week for the house to let you go! I told you crafted contingencies were cheating! |
