Hey gang, I am planning on building a cleric of Kord. Any ideas for builds? The only problem is my area of play is Ket :(

Courage and Competition domains are both nice.

I suspect you want to be a Cleric of Kord so that you can do Enlarge Person on yourself. Unfortunately, 9 out of 10 times, it is better to use Enlarge Person on the Fighter or Barbarian in the party. Especially if there is a person that can cast Polymorph since Enlarge Person will make their gear big, and Polymorph will make them an Annis Hag.

You hear of Cleric Tanks and such a lot, but it is hard to do it effectively, why?

But if you are gonna do it anyway, I suggest at level 1 (assuming you're playing a human) you take Extra Turning and Quicken Spell. Divine Metamagic (Quicken) is gonna be the Keystone of your build. Each Divine Quicken uses 5 turning attempts.

Quicken Spell says that spells with a casting time of no more than 1 full round casting can be Quickened. So you can Divine Quicken Enlarge Person to do it as a Swift action instead of a Standard.

If you go straight cleric (which I kind of recommend), at 9th level you could do Divine Quicken Enlarge Person on the party tank then do a Righteous Might on yourself (standard action to cast and it has a range of personal). If you get a Cloak of Charisma +2 and have a 14 Charisma starting, then you could do 2 Divine Quickens a day.

Just one thing to remember. Divine Power + Divine Quickened Righteous Might will make you look like a rock star. Great for those tables where you are made the tank.

I have no idea where you will fit in Martial Weapon Proficiency (Greatsword) though. I guess you could take a level of Warpriest (martial weapons and Glory domain). Note: Glory domain has Holy Sword as a 5th level domain spell. Righteous Might or Divine Power (for tunnels) + Quickened Holy Sword?

One final note: Righteous Might was Errata'ed to +4 Size bonus to Strength, +2 Size bonus to Constitution, +2 NA, and the DR starts at 3/Evil (6/Evil at 12th, 9/Evil at 15th).

Divine Power is BAB = Character Level and +6 ENHANCEMENT to Strength (doesn't stack with +Str guantlets/belt).

Sure you could blow your Turn Wad to get Righteous Might and Divine Power on round 1, then Quicken Holy Sword on Round 2 before you run/charge in, but you'll look like a fool trying to be a Paladin.

You could also consider doing Barbarian/Fighter/Divine Crusader (just take Strength, Competition or Courage domain).

You will encounter variation with this interpretation of quicken spell, so be aware.

All depends on what you want to do. I agree for the most part with JosephKell, though my take:

Let's assume you want to be Tank first, Healer second. I'd recommend working with the assumption that your real power will come at later levels -- you can easily bide your time at low levels being the band-aid and assisting the fighter if you have to.

The DMM Quicken route is a good way to get there. Positive Cha to start, Extra Turning and Quicken at 1. I'd build your feats around either taking Extra Turning as many times as possible, melee feats (power attack is a given, the rest probably won't give you the same bang for the buck as more turning), and/or Divine Spell Power (since you'll be tilted toward turning anyway, why not toss on a caster level bump -- you'll be able to hit the plateaus for Righteous Might at lower level, bump Divine Power, etc) for one measly feat and probably some gear you'll get access to along the way.

Domains:
Chaos - not good for LG

Competition -- I really like it if you were an "opposed" guy -- grappler, tripper, etc. Zeal is a nifty spell. But there's better options.

Courage - Spell list is quite good (Valiant Fury is excellent), domain power is great low-level, but somewhat useless if there's a paladin in the party and at high level where there's a Heroes' Feast, so it's a tradeoff.

Good - not spectacular, but allows you to craft a crack bead later (which would be a costly feat and given you aren't a caster cleric, not the best choice).

Luck - arguably the strongest domain power in the game. Spell list is OK

Nobility - really not that spectacular.

Strength - strong spell list and a power that gets better as you progress.

I'd pick based on whether you thought you'd try to get access to other domains later -- Contemplative gives one of your choice (limited access). Warpriest makes you give up a caster level in return for Glory domain (which bumps DSP checks and has a hot spell list too).

Courage, Luck, Strength (my opinion, not in any order).

It's really amazing that Kord doesn't have the War domain as that'd be an easy pick to get free proficiency. Potentially you could take proficiency with Greatsword at 1 (along with Quicken) and start with 14 Cha, then DMM (Quicken) at 3 -- if you go this route there's no reason not to get the most out of it as early as possible -- you'd have 5 turn attempts, so one shot a day until 6 when you can take Extra Turning and pick up a Cloak of Cha +2 for an extra shot.

Stats would be something along the lines --
14 Str (6 points)
10 Dex (2)
14 Con (6)
8 Int (0)
14 Wis (6)
14 Cha (6)

Mediocre across the board, but bear in mind how cranked they will get later on at the drop of a hat.

You could also consider doing Barbarian/Fighter/Divine Crusader (just take Strength, Competition or Courage domain).

Note that divine crusaders prepare and cast spells as clerics even though they use charisma for spells. So, DMM will work with their spells as well as a normal cleric. And, you've already got a high charisma. The problem is getting the ability to turn either from a level of cleric or taking paladin levels (bonus to saves) and then working in extra turning, quicken and DMM. You may also want practiced spellcaster [divine crusader] going this route as your caster level is pretty low and your spells won't last long.

Kord is not a war god, more of a sportsman.

It just so happens my latest build is a cleric of Kord. Here's what I decided with:

Half-Orc
Str: 18 (10 pts)
Dex: 14 (6 pts)
Con: 14 (6 pts)
Int: 6 (0 pts)
Wis: 14 (6 pts)
Cha: 6 (0 pts)

Domains: Courage & Strength

Lvl1: Cleric (Combat Reflexes)
Lvl2: Barbarian (starts using Great Sword)
Lvl3: Cleric (Extra Rage)
Lvl4: Cleric (+1 Str)
Lvl5: Cleric
Lvl6: Cleric (Power Attack)
Lvl7: Cleric
Lvl8: Cleric (+1 Str)
Lvl9: Cleric (Cleave)
Lvl10: Cleric
Lvl11: Cleric
Lvl12: Cleric (+1 Str, Improved Critical: Great Sword)
Lvl13: Cleric
Lvl14: Cleric
Lvl15: Cleric (Weapon Focus: Great Sword or Great Cleave)

I plan on eventually fighting in Mithral Plate (30 ft. move with Barbarian) with a Great Sword. The Combat Reflexes is great with the Reach gained from Enlarge Person or Righteous Might. I may decide to throw another level of Barbarian in there for the Uncanny Dodge, but I'm not sure where the most efficient level to do that is. Uncanny Dodge + Combat Reflexes means you don't ever suffer from being caught Flat-Footed.

Since I can't cast even quickened spells while raging and the character obviously flunked Turn Undead in Clerical school, the Divine metamagics aren't very useful. The basic battle plan is:

1) Cast a buff or two
2) Rage and enter melee
3) Heal everyone when its all over

It's probably not the most efficient clerical tank build but it isn't that sloppy either. I plan on playing him as a big-hearted, but shy lug who'd just as soon pet a bunny as cleave a demon.

My cleric is a Wood Elf of Kord.

Stats:
Str 18
Dex 12
Con 12
Int 6
Wis 16
Cha 8

Stat boosts go into Wis and I have power attack, combat casting and weapon prof: greatsword. Domains are Luck and Strength. Take only buffing/status healing spells. Stat bumps go into Wis as I am a full cleric.

I hit just as hard as a fighter and when I get divine power I will have the same base attack. If no one needs healed then melee and if someone needs healed then just heal them.

Remember that enlarging (from enlarge person) lowers your Dex by 2 and lessens the value of Combat Reflexes.

Wis 16

12 Con for a front-line fighter tends to lead to sadness (my experience), particularly since you can't rage if needed. It's rough for wood-elfs in that respect, but that's why there are many wood elf archers and not so much other stuff. I realize you can buff and heal yourself, but that's rounds you aren't swinging a sword, which is what you want to be doing with 18 str).

Thing about being a cleric though is that you can heal yourself up when your hp drop (just use a big heal). My area is short on BDF so I do tend to use my hitting power alot, and I also have the option of spells if needed (as a full cleric).

Yes, but as a melee cleric, I (and perhaps only I) would be expecting you to be able to stand there and take it while swinging every round -- and for that matter, I'd expect you to be taking the front ranks in combat (maybe getting off one buff depending on the proximities). Lower Con means less chance of getting a Cure off via Concentration. And trading swing(s) for heals can really be risky -- trade one heal (Xd8's+) and the bad guys get another full round. You might luck out, you might suffer an unlucky crit (which has a greater probability when you are giving free shots to the enemy), but you'll probably end up just needing to heal up again the next round. One workaround is the Quicken/DMM route, though you are giving up feats that would otherwise be spent on Power Attack or the like.

If you're not sold on being a cleric, you can be a dedicated warrior of Kord with the Holy Liberator and Pious Templar classes. I am currently a Bbn2/Rgr1/Clr3/PT2/HL4, a combination with nearly full BAB, good saves, and a variety of utility spells (align weapon, bless weapon, enlarge person, lesser restoration, etc.). Domains are Strength and Luck.

On a full BAB build, Holy Liberator can't be reached until 8th level unless you have levels in Swashbuckler or Paladin. Pious Templar can be done at 6th level.

For a cleric, I like the quicken spell/divine metamagic quicken combination. A build for that might be:

Human
S 14 D 8 C 14 I 10 W 15 C 14
Stat bumps to Wisdom
1: MWP: Greatsword, Quicken Spell
3: DMM: Quicken
6: Extra Turning
9: Craft Wondrous Item
12:Power Attack

Adding a level of a class with martial weapon proficiency is a good idea.

Once you get to 5th level spells, you'll want a 20 Wis for the bonus 5th level spell, since your buffing for the big battle might be:

Round 1: DMM Quickened Righteous Might, Divine Power
Round 2: Quickened Divine Favor, full attack

Theres some Kordites :P in Ket, I know of 2 that I play with on a semi regular basis.

My one friend is running a vanilla Human Cleric, Strength and Luck for Domains. his Int and Cha are dump stats. For Feats he took Martial Weapon: Great Sword, Improved unarmed and Improved Grapple. He enlarges himself and grabs someone into the grapple as the rogues poke them from relative safety.

Its a practical build and it fits with the Kord fluff. If the're are multiple opponents then he swats them with the sword, if its one annoyning one then he grabs them and we gank the baddy in a noble/honorable way.

There shouldn't be variation in this interpretation. That interpretation is wrong. Enlarge Person is a 1 round spell, not a full round spell, the former of which can't be quickened. Rapid Spell is the feat needed for Enlarge Person.

No it isn't.

A spell whose casting time is more than 1 full-round action cannot be quickened.
A spell that takes 1 round to cast is a full-round action

I think what Rapid Spell is saying is that you can't turn lesser restoration (3-round casting time) into a swift action with Rapid + Quicken.

Why you'd apply Rapid + Quicken to, say, summon monster (when you could just apply Quicken to it and get the same effect) is beyond me. Probably would've been easier to just say you can't apply both to the same spell.

What is wrong is the description of Rapid Spell. The limit it imposes on applying Quicken to a spell with a 1 round casting time is not recognized by R&D. You can Quicken Enlarge Person or Summon Monster.

Well, this is actually a Llerg build for me, but mechanically identical since the domains are also held by Kord. It has an alignment shift after the first mod, but that is only because of the stupid restriction that monks must be lawful.

Kord Al’Waqir

Half-Orc
1 Monk/14 Cleric of Llerg (strength, competition)
18,12,14,6,15,6

Feats:
1)ImpUnarm
1)ImpGrapple
1)StunFist
3)PowAtk
6)CraftArms
9)CraftWonder
12)TWF
15)ImpTWF

Benchmarks:
Grapple check +14 at level 2 with enlarge person
Grapple check with divine power and righteous might is +28 at level 10, +33 at level 15
Grapple +37 for one round thanks to strength domain at level 15 with other buffs

Reservations:
I hate not having a boatload of skills.
It doesn’t make use of quicken or divine quicken (which would make life easy for a melee cleric)
Doesn’t make use of flurry for a loooong time (til level 12?)- wears heavy armor until stats are boosted high enough to ditch armor (and bracers are friggin expensive and uncraftable for him).

I was originally going to fit in spontaneous summoner with the animal domain, might still do that since it’s a likely level 12 feat anywho. If I do that I'll probably shuffle stuff around to take rapid spell and have to change to human to afford the extra skill ranks. Some more shuffling could be done to take TWF earlier and have an acceptable unarmored AC someday so that he can flurry.

Ponderings:
I just recalled that I can’t TWF whilst grappling, so I’m open to other notions for what to do with those feats (they’re okay stand-ins for when I just wanna deal damage tho). I’m not likely to take clever wrestling since that is only for escaping grapples, and it doesn’t work when enlarged/righteous might'd (since a pre-req is small or medium size).

Roleplay:
I’m planning on roleplaying him sort of as a Zathras who loves animals (and wrestling animals), and is proud of his strength.
(from babylon 5 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zathras the quotes best demonstrate his dutiful self-pitying demeanor).

"Kord understand. No Kord not understand, but Kord do. Kord good at doings, not understandings."
"Kord warn, but no, no one listen to poor Kord, no."
"Everyone always coming to Kord with problems. Great responsibilities. But Kord does not mind. Kord trained in crisis management."
"But only Kord have no one to talk to. No one manages poor Kord, you see. So Kord talks to dirt. Sometimes talks to walls, or talks to ceilings. But dirt is closer. Dirt is used, through everyone walking on it. Just like Kord, but we've come to like it. It is our role. It is our destiny in the universe."
"Kord is used to being beast of burden to other people's needs. Very sad life. Probably have very sad death. But, at least there is symmetry."
"Kord can never have anything nice."

I’m also likely to make use of as many chuck norris (his namesake-cordell walker) facts as applicable:

“When Kord does push-ups, he’s not lifting his weight, he is pushing down the world.”
“Kord shaves by kicking himself in the face. Only thing that can cut Kord is himself”
“Kord does not sleep, he waits.”
”Kord does not read books, he stares them down until he gets what he wants to know.”
“Kord knows quickest way to a man’s heart.” *clenches fist*, *shadow punches*

Kord has had a hard enough life as all half-orcs do, but worshipping Llerg when named Kord was a source of additional endless harassment and jokes by his fellow clergy.
