| Dracspero04-24-05, 06:02 PM | Just bought the LG Gazetteer, what a waste of money THAT was. Anyway, it didn't answer a question I had so I'll try here. Can a human from Ket take Draconian as one of his starting languages? It does not list Draconian in the languages section (nor does there even appear to be mention of dragons in the book, but I haven't read the whole thing yet), but since it appeared in one of the Modules I've played, it would seem to be existant in the world. |
| Samwise04-24-05, 11:17 PM | Why would it mention Draconian, they are from Krynn, which is the Dragonlance setting. If you mean Draconic, then why would you be looking in the LGG? For the LG campaign, the place to look would be in the LGCS. You should look there for information about what starting languages your character can take. |
| Dracspero04-24-05, 11:42 PM | Yes, I meant Draconic. And the LGCS says to look in the Gazetteer for the languages. As Draconic is a pre-requisite for Dragon Disciple, and Dragon Disciple is a core PrC, I wanted to know if it (Draconic) was available as a starting language. I didn't think it was an unreasonable question, but perhaps nobody's ever asked before. |
| Samwise04-24-05, 11:55 PM | No, the LGCS says to look in the Gazzetteer for a list of what are, from the context, a group of campaign specific languages. It also directs to look at the campaign website for a complete list of languages. Beyond that, the LGCS gives no specific indications of limitations on languages. Therefore, the obvious conclusion is that you should use the default availability of bonus languages as indicated in the PHB, where I belive you will discover that Draconic is an additional bonus language for some classes, although not a general human bonus language. And the question is not unreasonable. The manner in which it was asked . . . |
| ranagrande04-25-05, 12:20 AM | A human (or any other race) wizard (only a wizard) from Ket (or anywhere else) can take Draconic as a bonus language. Anyone else can learn it by spending skill ranks on Speak Language. |
| WotC_Tulach04-25-05, 12:36 AM | A human (or any other race) wizard (only a wizard) from Ket (or anywhere else) can take Draconic as a bonus language. Anyone else can learn it by spending skill ranks on Speak Language. Ranagrande is correct. Only wizards (and, I believe, sorcerers - no PHB in front of me) can take Draconic as one of their bonus languages. You can still spend the skill points (2 for most classes, 1 for bards) to pick up Draconic at 1st level. |
| Dracspero04-25-05, 07:11 AM | Actually, according to the PHB, any language is available to humans. It is the non-human races that would need to have a level of wizard in order to take draconic. But thanks. I wasn't sure if the languages from the gazeteer added to the list in the PHB or replaced it. |
| oroborous04-25-05, 08:21 PM | Just to be safe, I looked it up in the PHB and humans do have "any (besides secret languages such as Druidic)" listed as a bonus language. IMHO Draconic is a good language to have for flair. At one point it was the language of arcane magic users. It would be like a Catholic cleric in this world today speaking Latin. |
| mage18904-28-05, 01:48 PM | Yeah, it's been said. Humans and Halfelves can take any language they like, including Draconic, except for the restricted class only languages (Only Druidic if I remember correctly) |
