Okay, I got a Marshall that I am trying to learn all the languages with. I know you can't get Druidic unless your a druid, but what about the rest of them. Is there any other languages that are specific like that, where you need special access? Or are all the ones listed in the PH and LGG open for learning? I've been told that you need special access to get Undercommon, even though it is listed in the PHB, but I couldn't find anywhere that made it limited.
My character has learned Sidhee as well due to a favor, so I guess that one could be included as one that you need special access to.

Here's my list of languages thus far.
Common
Elven
Sidhee
Draconic
Orc
Goblin
Giant
Gnoll
Ancient Backlunish
Old Oeridian
Rhopan
Flan/Ancient Flan
Abyssal
Infernal
Ancient Suloise

Also, what would you recommend that I get next?

Rhopan

By Greyhawk Canon, the Rhennee don't teach Rhopan to non-Rhennee. LG now requires non-Rhennee to have campaign documentation to learn Rhopan.

"The following dialects are Core for all characters: Amedi, Baklunish, Cold Tongue, Flan, Keoish, Lendorian, Nyrondese, Old Oeridian, Olman, Ordai, Suloise, Touv, Ulagha, and Velondi. Rhopan is Core for Rhennee.

Ancient Flan and Flan are the same language; Ur-Flan is a unique language. Anceint Suloise and Suloise are the same language. Ancient Baklunish and Baklunish are the same language. Learning Druidic (for non-druids), Ferral, Lendorian Elven, Rhopan (for non-Rhennee), or Ur-Flan requires special documentation. The most prominent of these languages are the human racial languages: Ancient Baklunish, Flan, Old Oeridian and Ancient Suloise."

Is that directly pulled from the new LGCS?!

I'm glad someone finally made the ancient languages the same as their non-ancient counterparts! Maybe now I won't have DMs telling me I don't understand Baklunish when I understand the only Baklunish language in the Greyhawk Gazeteer!

No, not directly. Some of it has been changed, which you will notice when you see the draft, hopefully next week.

There's a new one that requires access to learn as well, the language of the Goliaths. It's called Gol-kaa.

Goliaths? In LG?

Goliath Duskblades in LG?
Britt

01-31-07, 04:56 PM
No idea, the LGCS isn't out yet, so I don't know/can't say if duskblades are legal ;) Goliaths have shown up in mods already, so they exist in the LG world now.

One thing I noticed Britt is that Undercommon, and all the extra-planar languages are absent from the list.

Were you just referring to all Human languages or do non-human languages need special documentation too?
Britt

01-31-07, 05:00 PM
Which is fine, as the passage above doesn't say those are the only languages you can learn. Those are just the Greyhawk specific ones. Actually, I probably shouldn't add Gol-kaa for that reason :)

Where does it list these languages? I was unable to find any references to this list. Also, where does it say that you must be Rhenee to learn Rhopan? Just need to know for future questions at tables and legallity.

Thanks

The LGCS will be all you need for legality :) It used to point you to a non-existent list on the LG website and the out-of-print LGG. That made it extremely hard to find the list of languages. We just combined those lists and did a little bit of digging to make sure we found everything.
NeSoDak

01-31-07, 05:18 PM
So the new LGCS will have the list? Because the current one points toward the nonexistant web site. Which is why I have Rhopan, whithout being Rhenee, because there is currently nothing official anywhere that can be found. Since I was unable to find anything, I took that to mean that everything is available. Is undercommon available? I've been told its limited.

Thanks

Add Illumian to the unique racial languages...

The languages in the PH are available exactly how the PH says they are. Anything else requires special documentation, such as the LGCS or an AR. I'm not sure how Rhopan will be handled; you'll probably need to switch it for a legal language.

Does that mean I now will need documentation to know (Ancient) sueloise now? Even though I'm suel and a member of the scarlet brotherhood?

No. As it says, Suloise is Core and Ancient Suloise is same as Suloise. Thus, Ancient Suloise is Core.

So, to clarify, is this accurate? A PC can learn, through the use of skill points, any language in the PH, plus anything from the above list, without campaign documentation. Starting characters have automatic languages as per the PH and humans and half-elves add the above list to the 'Any' languages they can choose as bonus starting languages for a high Int.

This is probably more a recommendation than a query: is there any chance at all that humans can be given their racial language as a bonus language? I realise that's an alteration of the core rules, so might be problematic but it makes very little sense, particularly that a starting Rhenee only speaks Rhenee if he buys it or has Int 12, similarly a starting Touv.

In my opinion, this does actually make some sense. Not everyone who is ethnically one particular race aways knows said language. For example, I know some Asians who don't know any oriental language at all. Same goes for other ethnicities as well (jewish, germans, french, etc). What I'm getting at here is that despite the fact that someone may look a certain way due to their heritage, it doesn't mean that they speak the language that their parents/grandparents/great-grandparents spoke. It might lean them in that direction (be a available bonus language for a high int at character creation) but in my opinion should not govern what languages they automatically know.

I could understand and support swapping out 'common' for the racial language at first level, but thats an entirely different story.

Agreed... in 21st century earth that's very true. It is also a reasonable argument for the more cosmopolitan races/areas. I still maintain that in the World of Greyhawk the proportion of Rhenee or Touv who would not speak their racial language - and speak it as their first language, instead of Common - will be very small indeed. I suppose that my main objection is that the uneducated Touv PC will only be able to speak Touv if they spend skill points on it!

Celestial isn't on the list of the OP. Yes, it's in the PHB, but the OP hasn't taken it yet, and I think he should.

If I can't have Rhopan, I'll probably substitute Celestial for it. In what order would you suggest picking up the rest of the languages? I'll be picking up about 2 or 3 every level.

It might be an idea to mention that Cold Tongue is called Frosti by those who actually speak it.

Is Celestial used in any church MO's or nething? The only thing I've seen is the Church of Heironeious in the Yeomanry where you can use it to substitute for 1 rank in Knowledge(religion).

Might be... I was working from memory and don't have the books at hand. Fact is that is not called Cold Tongue by the native speakers of said language.
