I just finished playing a mod that gave access to a really cool animal. But only as an animal companion.

and 2 mods ago I played another mod that only gave access to a new mount, but only as an animal companion.

So please don't forget that there is a third class out there that would like access to these new and nifty animals. PALADINS!! :D

By RAW Paladins are limit to Warhorse/warpony/riding dog.

Why not included special mounts when giving acess to animals. All that needs to be written is "This favor gives access to ..... as a animal companion or special mount"

Thanks!! :D

Hey at least you have found it as an animal companion. I have been playing a druid for three and a half years and have only seen one, and that was poorly thought out and nerfed the animal as a result.

yea, that's the standard for LG, if you really find one of the few rare "shroedingerish" feats/features one of your characters is longing for like hell, you will unerringly find it with another character .

my halfling druid 10 (63 ARs) has found access to "brixashulty" (nice for RP reasons for a halfling, not really sturdy at APL 8 and above), "deephound" (type: magical beast, so 99% useless to a druid) and "dire badger" (available for druids anyway, but may be also used by a paladin) but he has never seen any of those yummy "apply template XY to your animal companion" or the like.

the only one who ever have seen ONE of these is my cleric 13 (85 ARs) :(

I think the example Cynric is referring to IS one of those "apply template" ones. Remember that templates often change the animal's type, usually to magical beast.

That said, I'm pretty sure Cynric has seen at least two. ¬.¬

It would be especially good to see special mounts for small paladins whose standard mounts disappear in a puff of smoke the first time the party gets fire balled. (Anyone want to put an 8HD advanced celestial dire hawk suitable for level 8 and over small paladins in an upcoming mod ? .. hint hint? /nudge /bribe)

Though if you made a special mount available you would have to be careful to calculate the correct minimum paladin level to take the mount and level adjustments for the paladin boosts to the mount.

Exactly how much of a bribe would we be talking about here... :D

hey start to write it yourself, just imagine the cartloads of bribes coming to you :P

my halfling druid would send you a gallon of special honey dew brand from his clans beehives.

the fun part is to take a critter with 3 or fewer HD, add the celestial template - zero CR increase - and then advance it with the HD bumps :)

I am not even talking templates.

We found a fairly nice flying mount. Druids and rangers can take them as animal companions

Other Pc's can buy them as a standard mount (just costs alot)

But Paladin's are denied the chance to have them as a special mount.

All I am saying is if your mod is giving access to an animal, then write it in as access as an animal companion or special mount

thats all

I take it you informed your local triad about it? So that they can keep it in mind the next time something like this comes up? I know that in the Splintered Suns the couple of times people gave access to new animal companions who could function as a mount it usually was also provided to paladins. I did had to make the necessary modifications though, because the authors forgot to check the DMG and note that flying mounts can only be taken on higher level by paladins ;)

If the Special mount you have in mind fits YOUR Paladin. Ask your Triad for a special mission to grant access to the critter.

It is much nicer to have a unique or differnt mount then one everyone gets on an AR ;)

I think you are Perrenland? Yes? write to A Cowan, who is the Triad in charge of considiering and managing Requests for special missions.

GB.
(ps most regions already have special missions, or one of your local group can write and run the mission with help, editing & ok from the Triad)

Thanks Genghis!

I mentioned it once to Bruce awhile back.. but nothing came of it.

My group is still very new (We just hit our first year!!) So I will see what I can do.

I have thought about a special mission for my mount (I want a Boar). Since I haven't been able to get access to a Boar, I have just been calling my various mounts Boars. (My character is delusional about several things, so 1 more didn't matter). Works well until your Boar/warpony decided it is tired of a pigpen for a place to sleep :D

I'm getting there Clannagh. Patience, mods don't happen over night :)
I do have an idea, but I need to see Gabbie's ARs at some point.
You will get your special mission, I did promise you didn't I? :)

Funny, I played in a mod with a fairly nice flying mount, and the exact opposite is true. It is available as a special mount or cohort, but not an animal companion.

If your talking about what I think you are .. a flying critter from ROS .. that would indeed make a good paladin mount. and it has a good CR so it would be available to a level 7 Paladin.

Though if you do a special mission for it i would be inclined to ask for a celestial templated version (level 8 paladin). technically you could even advance it to 10HD and add celestial but you would need to be a level 13 paladin to get it and it would only count as a level 5 mount for paladin level related mount bumps.

Well, you wouldn't be the first Perrenland paladin to have a boar mount...

I dunno, Maybe I'm playing all the right games, but I seem to come across plenty of animal companions, mounts, familiars and interesting cohorts. By far the best partners I've seen are the paladin mounts that are just looking for a new home So keep your head up, you might just find a celestial Griffon or the like.

Ah, but have you seen them in Core mods AOSOL? I know there are several regions that are somewhat known for having more special mount/animal companion options than others.

If i ever see a cool paladin mount in a mod, I"ll hold that mod for a day when our paladin is playing, thats for sure.

Did the access come through a special mission? I looked through the special missions, but there didn't seem to be anything related to mounts for Perreneland.

I play a paladin in Highfolk/Vesve Forest and I am looking forward to requesting a unicorn mount via a special mission, since I am fairly sure that paladin special mounts are not on the minds of most mod writers here (CE Region). One of my questions is whether all the special mounts follow the required paladin levels set in the DMG (aka 6th lvl for a unicorn). The main reason I ask this is because in races of wild, the 5th level elf paladin substitution level gets a unicorn, but with different advancement options (typically worse if I remember correctly). I *have* seen access to elf paladin lvl 1, however, I am half-elven.

I guess my main question is, should I wait til lvl 6 to request a special mission, or can I send in a request sooner? Currently my paladin is lvl 4.

I suggest sending it in advence, especially if you Triads are busy (or working on new meta org). Level 4 might be a bit early, maybe wait till level 5
